Auto Service
I took my 2005 Highlander in because the oil pressure light was flickering. The car is only 9.5 years old and has 94,500 miles on it.
At the time I brought it to Team Princeton, the car ran fine - but the oil pressure light flickered on and off every five minutes or so. I was on an out of town trip and it was Saturday. Team Princeton took the car and said they'd service it first thing Monday and rented me a car so I'd have away to get around. Fairly responsive.
That Monday morning they pulled the oil pan and investigate the engine. They charged me $350+ (plus about $100 for a rental car for 3 days) for this service.
After performing the service, they told me the engine needed to be replaced because of engine sludge. They gave me a quote for
$6,900 to $7,200 to replace it.
I declined their help and paid to have the car shipped back to my local dealer in Arlington, VA. Following the service ($350), the rental car (about $100), the hotel I had to stay in Sunday night ($140), the train ticket back home ($100) and the shipping service for the car ($500), I was out about $1,200.
I had my local deal who took a careful look at the car. They said the engine was fine and that they could take care of the sludge with a "Performance oil change." They charged me the same $400 that Team Princeton charged me to diagnose a "bad engine." In addition, the assured me the car would be fine and that they would stand behind the work.
Too bad Team Princeton couldn't do the same thing. It would have saved me $1,200 and a lot of time and headaches.
