The price quoted was not the lowest, nor the highest we had received. I did try to get The IceMan to reduce the price but he would not budge. So, we thought about it a bit. We decided to go with The IceMan because of the ratings he had received on Angies' List.
We were pleased that he was able to install the new A/C in a short time period. It was July 3rd. We had been through some very hot weather and our A/C had died.
The day of the installation, the workers arrived on time and kept at work. They had a lot of work to do but completed without a hitch. They were also responsible for filing for the permit in our township to do this work. I began to wonder when I did not hear anything about it. I knew that our township inspector would have to check the installation.
Finally, in late October, I received the paperwork from The Iceman for our permit. Ok, it took a long time to get to me. But, it was through and provided important information to tell us what we needed to do to be ready to pass the inspection. Standards have changed since the last A/C was installed, so it was not just the A/C that the inspector woud be looking at. The IceMan gave us that information.
We have not had a single problem with the A/C and I would recommend The IceMan to others. Just know that he will not be the least expensive of the installers. But the quality of the work has a value.
Showed up as promised, quickly identified the problem, he knew what needed to be done. The $190 quote for the sealant, material and installation, seemed to be high since the online cost of the sealant was $75. After some negotiation, this was reduced, and after applying a cash discount the total bill came to about $400.
The workman was very friendly and patient.
"We don't and never did give specific times for service work because we and no one can know how long any of the previous service calls are going take. Most hvac contractors and even are local utility use flat rate pricing, we been using it for 20 years to make it easy on the service tech and reduce errors. We are a mechanical contractor so I don't understand what she means by the comment the way mechanics do? If I charged by the hour I would not hire the best mechanics / service tech and supply them with the best and most expensive equipment and Carrier training who can do the repair quickly, I would be hiring inexperience tech school graduates who would take three to four time longer to do the same job and would probably change more parts to get the equipment in operation"
He showed up about 5:15 and got straight to work. Explained what he found as he diagnosed the problem. Didn't have the dual capacitor for the Trane unit; but, replaced it was able to install two single capacitors (one for the fan motor and one for the compressor). By 6:00pm the unit was running again.
