Just run as fast as you can! Don't be fooled...you will think he's a very nice guy (I certainly did), but he is unreliable and was never on the jobsite. By the end of the build I felt like I was the GC. He didn't pay the subcontractors in a timely manner. The house took 16 months to build when his contract promised it would be done in a year or less. When we moved in we had no idea that we didn't have a C of O! The worst part is that we ended up being handed a bill at the end for over $100,000 in extras that he never gave us prices for and that we never signed off on. They were extras that we wanted but he never told us what they would cost until after construction was completed. To top it off, through my own accounting error I realized that we overpaid him by $50,000! At the end of construction we thought we still owed him $20K but due to my error (which he pretended not to notice) he actually owed us $30,000! It has been a year and a half since I discovered the error and we still have not recovered our money. He hasn't answered a call or text from us in about a year. On the positive side, we have a beautiful home that we love very much but can't look back and say that building it was a positive experience because of our builder. He has a good eye for construction and design but he just doesn't know how to run a business and it's going to catch up with him very soon.
