More difficult for me to fix, however, were the several much lighter spots in each room where the stain was clearly missed or not applied as evenly as the rest. You can tell the difference between lighter shades due to the natural variation in wood absorbing the stain differently, which looks nice, versus the artificial streaks that really stick out like a sore thumb. Also, during the day when the sunlight is bright, you can clearly see curved stain marks where they didn't wipe the stain in the same direction as the grain, and instead went in a curved pattern kind of haphazardly either against the grain, or at a diagonal angle...why?!
We obviously had to call Wesley back in as there were just too many problems. He said there were splotches on the baseboard since I had mentioned we may be painting them anyway...(so I guess they just decided to go ahead and be messy, and help me make my decision to DEFINITELY re-paint the trim?!) Mind you, there was nothing wrong with them to start with so I could have been fine with not painting, not like they were beat up or anything.
As for the lighter spots, according to Wesley apparently that was because my floors were a lower grade and took in stain differently (this explanation would have worked if entire planks were a different color, but not just partial sections of planks that had stain missing - why would part of one area of wood absorb differently than the next inch over?).
He did admit the curved stain marks were just plain sloppy work and even took some photos to talk to his guys and let me know what happened. Great...how does that help me? I can figure out what happened! Wesley said the only remedy was to re-sand and re-stain. Not happening!
The original estimate given was for 3 days - day 1 sand, day 2 stain, day 3 finish. They ended up staining on day 1 after sanding went quicker than expected. I would imagine that trying to squeeze the most crucial/visible part of the project into the remainder of a day was what part of what led to this less than positive outcome.
I ended up knocking down the price by $50 when paying him, which in retrospect, was not NEARLY close to enough after spending some more time and surveying just how bad it was. I would definitely not hire them again nor recommend to anyone I like :)
A few family/friends had been over before I painted the trim, and actually couldn't help but ask me what happened to my baseboards and the oddly light portions of certain planks... not exactly what you'd want after spending nearly $2K to change the color of your floors...
To Wesley's credit, my floors originally were pretty varied in shade, and had many wormholes which I was not a fan of. Wesley warned that darkening them through staining may not even out the variation, and the wormholes may still be just as visible, but since we did end up going so dark, they now blend in quite nicely. This is the one positive outcome that I can report.
They got it all done in record time - subfloors, floors, drywall, insulation, painting, etc. - and got us back in before our child was born. Everything looks better than ever. Lorenzo and Wesley, the owners, are great - they're always available and made sure everything was perfect.
I can't thank them enough for all of their hard work. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
