We got bids from 3 companies including Joe. We selected Joe primarily because of his experience, design expertise and the "vibe" that we got that he has a very high expectation for quality and we would reap the benefit of that. He wasn't the cheapest or the highest priced. He had a target completion date of 2 weeks when others were promising 2-3 days.
We had Joe draw up plans for 2 sections of pavers off our deck inclusive of a fireplace ... he didn't just do what we asked him to, he put his expertise in the plans (he made the job harder for himself with all of the angles and cuts required to mimick the flow of our deck - his suggestion not ours) and we had a 2 way conversation to agree the final version. He also helped me get HoA and township approval/permits to start the work. This was slightly involved given the proximity of the firepit to the house and the wooden deck .... his expertise in the design ensured there were no issues identified in the design thoughout this process.
We extended the paver design by about 250 sq ft around the hot tub and put in a sitting wall by the firepit ... Joe charged us for materials only for these add ons. Joe was meticulous in all aspects of the job, but notably in the grading of the patio away from the house, potential areas for water accumulation by the fire pit and sitting wall and putting in measures (again at no extra cost) to deal with this. We had a sprinkler head that he capped for us and relocated a pre-existing balance beam for my daughters keeping everyone happy .... yet again at no extra cost.
3/4 of the way through the project, we had Joe draw up plans for landscaping around the paver patio. We've never done anything like this so we were very reliant on his expertise. We had a great two way dialogue to agree what worked best for us and he made design changes and offered alternatives to meet our expectations on plants etc .... To be clear, we were pretty vague in communicating what we wanted, but Joe took the right cues and offered alternatives that in the end were outstanding and clearly in line with what we were looking for!
Its actually quite disappointing that there doesn't seem to be alot of Angies List customers that provide feedback on services provided to the Princeton area contractors/companies.... I'd recommend Joe Zullo/New Leaf Landscapes to anyone and everyone for the work he provided us. Here's a breakdown of the pricing ....
- 900 sq ft pavers (14,000)
- 250 extra sq ft by hot tub and sitting wall (1800)
- landscaping (2100)
The job took longer than originally anticipated, completing in about 4 weeks......having said that we had alot of rain delays and it was 90+ weather on most if not all of the days in this period and all of the add ons noted above and below.
There is a lot of value given here (itemized below) that did not make it into the cost we actually paid him - Thanks for that Joe! Hopefully this review compensates for that a little bit in future work.
Extras that Joe did not charge us for:
1) design services
2) water accumulation relief measures
3) extra gravel to raise the grading by the hot tub to be level with the concrete pad
4) moving a balance beam to the back of the yard and making it closer to the ground for safety reasons and to keep my young daughters happy
5) flattening out the ground and re-seeding grass due to use of heavy equipment
6) market value increase to my property ... will post pictures .... the final product exceeded anything I could have thought of myself
It went fine -no problems.
