We were originally planning on purchasing another home, but with the market the way it is, we thought it would be a better idea to do an addition on our existing home. We Spoke to 3 different contractors and decided to go with Alleva because of the previous reviews. Everything sounded great until we put our $20,000 retainer down in April of 2024 and started the process. They did nothing but delay and postpone every aspect of the job. 3 project managers later and almost a year of aggravation, we finally finished, with myself and my wife, consistently fixing their errors. Their Trimmer was a joke and damaged all of my brand new solid wood, pre finished windows. Project Managers are Rude, abrasive and brush off all of your concerns. My Kitchen Cabinets are still not aligned because of the poor job with the framing and the structure is not fully square. Mike, the owner, is non existent and will ignore you until you pull your hair out, not that I have much anyway! Make sure you include every detail and needs in your contract and review every aspect of it, because if you need anything extra done, they will charge you 3-5 times what any other contractor would. Be smart, don’t let the excitement of your new project blind you from the fact that they are there to take your money and do the bare minimum to get their contract completed. Bottom line, Please do your due diligence and believe the negative reviews because there is truth in them! Lastly, Make sure to ask for a itemized Contract with prices, You will thank me later. UPDATED 2/20/24 Alleva was responsive to our original review (below). Mike Alleva listened to suggestions that would have prevented our ordeal, which we are willing to attribute to a labor shortage common in many industries. However, with high turnover, check-ins with new project managers and their customers are essential and would have made a big difference for us. We believe in second chances. As Alleva was eventually responsive, and the shower bar was repaired, we are increasing our stars to 4 for this company.

"Thank you for your feedback, it gives us opportunity to improve. To provide full transparency, we list everything that is included in our written contracts, as well as clear progress payment terms. These are signed by our clients prior to us starting any work to avoid any confusion. Sometimes during renovations, especially on older homes, unforeseen things will arise that are outside of the original contract. We warranty all of our work and appreciate you taking the time to share that we went back to fix the shower bar. We are sorry that you were not happy with your overall experience, but are glad that you are happy with your finished bathroom. It looks beautiful. We would love the opportunity to do better and serve you in the future."

They were professional and helpful from the beginning. Office is staffed and responsive and we knew we were hiring a reputable and trustworthy company with experience. I hired them to upgrade the insulation, electrical, sheetrock and moulding in the bedrooms in my older home.

Truly the WORST experience. Our kitchen renovation took over a year and cost tens of thousands more than the estimate. Plus, they did an objectively crappy job which we are currently spending thousands to repair. One town inspector said, “This looks like a DYI job and not like pros did it.” Another noted “Personally, I always use anchor screws for the upper cabs but these should hold.” Should ? Alleva ignored the discovery of asbestos floor tiles during their demo. I was the one who stopped the work, got it tested and arranged for it to be remediated. Their own project manager merely looked at a picture on his phone, somehow decided it wasn’t asbestos and told the guys to keep demoing! They timed everything terribly. They took our deposit and began demolition immediately without telling us cabinets would take months to arrive. We hadn’t chosen anything yet! And since they gave us no guidance, we went on our own and found cabinets we liked at Kuiken but afterwards Alleva they told us they only work with like one supplier and we were contracted to use their vendor or they wouldn’t guarantee it or something. So we had virtually no selection and many additional months without a kitchen. Plus, Alleva makes mistakes, big mistakes: measures incorrectly, hangs brand new ceilings and cabinets unevenly (VERY unevenly, like visibly lopsided), they had to move a wall they had already moved because they had miscalculated. And they charge for every repair. I told one of their rotating project managers—we got a letter every few months telling us so-and-so was no longer with the company—that it’s like Alleva makes mistakes just so they can charge for repairs, and their own employee laughed and said, “That I cannot confirm or deny.” And don’t bother to read your contract because they won’t honor it anyway. We had to fight for things they literally promised us in writing. Only good side is everyone is very polite, while they screw you. I have texts, photos and email receipts for each and every assertion I’ve made so please, Alleva, don’t bother trying to spin this to make yourself look less culpable. For all the time and money you cost us, and all the stress you caused, we would appreciate some acknowledgment and, at the very least, an apology but we know not to expect anything.

"We encourage customer feedback and appreciate your business, but your statements are not accurate. All building, electric and plumbing township inspections passed, and your cabinets were hung properly. Upon demolition, asbestos was discovered. We offered to handle the proper asbestos removal abatement for you, but you chose to hire your own separate company. All payment terms, including your deposit, were clearly laid out in your contract, and followed. After demolition you chose to upgrade to a different cabinet manufacturer which had an 8–12-week lead time. This was approved by you prior to ordering. There were no additional cost incurred for any work included in the original contract. Any work outside of the original contract was discussed and approved through a signed change order prior to starting the work. We do our best to make all our clients happy. After the project was completed, you wrote this review. We reached out to you and your husband in an attempt to rectify any issues you claimed to have with the work. You wouldn’t allow us back on site to review the "faulty" work and insisted that the only remedy you would accept would be a $10,000 rebate check. This obviously was unreasonable, especially after multiple courtesies and price reductions we had already granted you related to HVAC relocation costs, as well as additional electrical and plumbing work. Overall, your kitchen came out beautiful. We are very sorry that you were not happy with your experience and would be glad to address any issues you claim to have."

We highly recommend Alleva Construction for any renovation project. They are highly professional, reliable, and do great work. They helped guide us through two major renovations in the past seven years (a complete kitchen remodel and a 1200 square foot second floor addition). They are highly responsive, communicative, and the quality of their work and materials is top notch. We look forward to working with them on our next project.

I had them do my kitchen and bathroom which were both very outdated. Their designer Mike had great ideas. The project managers Jake and Ernie were extremely knowledgeable and professional. Although I was nervous about going through the construction, I was very pleased with the process and the level of craftsmanship of their crew. I would highly recommend them!

Sorry for such a long review but Alleva deserves it. I have worked with 6 contractors over the past 15 years and spent quite a bit on different projects since we have an older home and lots to do. I am very meticulous about references now and I interviewed at least 5 other construction companies before deciding to go with Alleva. I am also really suspicious of contractors since many are unscrupulous and incompetent. My husband and I hope that you choose Alleva Construction because of the following factors: Quality work--everything looks beautiful, License-This is a must have and Alleva has it. Don't hire anyone without this. General Liability and Workers Comp Insurance--Obviously this is necessary and discuss this on the 1st interview on the phone Experience-Michael Alleva started the company in 1987 and shared his story with us. We connected with him and were impressed by his professional and knowledgeable demeanor. Dawn is more than a secretary and I bothered her way too much and she was always sweet. Jake is Mike's son and was absolutely honest, a rare find. Clint was respectful and great to work with. Domingo was awesome, answered his cell phone when I called and cleaned up, extremely rare for a Foreman. They have a beautiful and newly renovated facility in Hackensack, NJ. References and a Positive Reputation--they didn't have anything to hide and have clear credentials Steady and Trained Staff and Crew--already mentioned above. Turnaround Time--they finished a little later than they said but it was not a big deal, especially since this was a critical repair of the facade of the house, Pricing--Very fair and they bent over backwards to help us with financing! I meet many people and look for excellent customer service and expertise. As a result, we offer our recommendation without reservation. Please feel free to contact me as a reference. Thanks.

He is wonderful.   He will be honest and tell you what needs to be done.   He was the only one out of all the estimate I received that was very good.   He is the first contractor I have had that will be honest with you.  They were in and out within a day.   He even called to check up to make sure everything was up to my satisfaction.  I would recommend him to others.

The rear dormer on my house was leaking. I hired another contractor, Hackensack Roofing, to repair it. They removed the old shingles and, because the roof was  nearly flat, replaced them with roll roofing. They did a good job, for only $1800,. However, the roof continued to leak, at a somewhat slower rate,  in heavy rain. After they made several unsuccessful attempts to rix the problem, including applying more sealant to the juncture of roof and chimney, I gave up on them, and hired Alleva Construction. Michael Alleva, the owner, came to the house and said the sheetrock on part of the stairwell had to come down. His crew would then locate the leak and fix it. He gave me an estimate of $1880. I agreed. His crew chief, Freddy, came to the house. This was in December, the weather was cold and getting colder, but Freddy wanted to start immediately. I said no. The work was postponed to the spring. Freddy came and, after removing the agreed-upon section of sheetrock, said considerably more would have to be removed. He gave me an estimate of an additional $4,833. Freddy soon said he had found the leak., a gap left by Hackensack Roofing between the flashing and the chimney. He said he had filled the gap with sealant. New sheetrock was installed and the cracks between the plaster sheets were filled.. I paid the remainder due. That was March 31, 2011. I painted the stairwell. We didn't get a heavy rain for three weeks. Then it poured, and the leak resumed. I called Alleva Construction and asked to speak with Mr. Alleva. Instead, the call was routed to Freddy, who came with crew, who cut a square hole in the new ceiling sheetrock and, using a garden hose, identified the leak as coming from cracks in the chimney. Freddy gave me an estimate of $7,775 to finish the job. I protested that it was too high.  Freddy said that on roof work, the customer is expected to pay more, considering the risk. I felt I had no alternative, and agreed. The crew  sanded and wire-brushed the chimney bricks and covered them with what Fredddy said was hydraulic cement, topped with waterproof stucco. The crew also installed replacement sheetrock in the stairwell. I paid the bill.  It is three weeks later. We had one pretty good rain in this period, and the roof didn't leak. So far, so good. My complaints here are, first, the enormous size of the total bills, particulatly the third one. All told, the crews worked five or six days. Second, the leak was not properly identified until the second attempt. Seems incompetent. If it turns out, as the year and rains continue, that this repair was successful, I would rate the quality of the work done as adequate, although the quality of the diagnosis was poor. However this turns out, I want no further contact with Freddy.

I signed the contract, not knowing what he was actually going to do. He said the job would be $450. It took a carpenter 1 hr, and he put up 12 feet of 2x4's. I called him and told him that I thought I was grossly overcharged. He said he couldn't do anything about it, even though he was the owner. He gave me no satisfaction. He refused to give me an itemized bill for the cost of supplies and labor. 2/17 I contacted them in both December and January, was told that a $75 refund would be mailed out to me. As of yet have not received anything from them.

"SHE WAS GIVEN A DETAILED WRITTEN ESTIMATE WITH THE COST AND SPECIFICATIONS OF THE JOB WHICH SHE SIGNED PRIOR TO STARTING WORK. WE COMPLETED THE WORK AND HAD HER LOOK OVER EVERYTHING BEFORE PAYMENT. SHE WAS PLEASED WITH THE WORK AND PAID THE $450. WITHIN A WEEK SHE CALLED SAYING SHE FELT SHE HAD BEEN OVERCHARGED BUT WAS HAPPY WITH THE WORK. WE TOLD HER WE COULDN'T CHANGE THE PRICE AFTER THE FACT BUT WOULD BE GLAD TO FIX SOMETHING THAT WE DID IF SHE WAS NOT HAPPY WITH THE SHELF. HER RESPONSE WAS SHE JUST WANTED SOME MONEY BACK. THE JOB TOOK MUCH LONGER THAN AN HOUR, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CONSIDER ESTIMATING TIME, TRAVEL, GETTING MATERIALS ETC. WE COULD NOT HAVE DONE THE JOB FOR LESS. IT IS CLEAR THIS CUSTOMER IS TRYING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF US AND HAVE A PRICE REDUCTION AFTER THE FACT ON WORK SHE APPROVED, SIGNED, PAID FOR IN FULL AND IS HAPPY WITH. SHE THREATENED US WITH A BAD ANGIE'S LIST RATING IF WE DIDN'T SEND HER SOME MONEY BACK. WE STAND BEHIND OUR WORK AND SIMPLY CANNOT CHANGE PRICES FOR NO GOOD REASON AFTER THE FACT."
