2 showers were improperly constructed...the concrete board was left outside of the base pan.  Ottoman tile installed the tiles in the showers not recognizing or not caring the concrete board was improperly installed, and the tile "hid" the improper installation.  The first time the shower was used, it leaked through the dining room ceiling.  Drywall upstairs had to be removed to diagnose the problem.  Ottoman tile looked at the problem, immediately saw the issue, and refused to fix the problem.  They gave me an estimate of $7,000 to re-do the work.  When called and asked to fix their shoddy job at their expense, they hung up...never to be heard from again.
I had to hire a different contractor to rip out the showers, re-install the concrete board, tape and "mud" it, then re-order and re-install the tile, at an additional cost to me of $5,000. Re-installation of the ceiling and sheetrock was another added expense.  It is my understanding that the American Tile Association requires that installers guarantee that the shower is built correctly BEFORE installing the tile, and to STOP the job if the underlying work is not right...to prevent what happened to me.
Things happen...I understand that.  But when a problem happens and the installer refuses to stand behind their work, consumer beware!
