New roofs. New siding (including product from the James Hardie line). New windows and doors. Solar installation.
I worked with Dan Keller who was very professional from the first meeting to get a bid and the options I faced for replacing my roof. I got a total of three bids from contractors and Keller's came in as the best in terms of clarity as to scope of work and the price for what was to be included. Scope of work: I had the old roof removed and a new roof installed. The work included replacing any damaged roof sheathing, installing ice & water shielding, installing GAF Algae Resistant shingles on a piched roof, new pipe flanges on roof plumbing vent pipes, new baffled ridge vents, new ridge caps. The price included 10 year workmanship warranty and I upgraded to GAF Weather Stopper "System Plus" extended warranty for an additional $200. The job was done in one day, and the clean-up was great!! There was very little debris left around the property. It is now January 2013, and there are no problems with the roof. In fact, I survived the superstorm Sandy with only minor danage to some shingles on the ridge vent. Keller & Sons even cleaned my roof gutters as part of the roofing job. A great family business that I would recommend to anyone.

From start to finish this was an excellent experience with a very highly regarded local contractor. Salesperson (Brendan) came promptly when he said he would, then explained the roofing options in great detail. He was up on the roof measuring and taking pictures -- which he later sent to us via email along with the estimate. The pictures he provided were not only helpful in assessing the damage, but also useful when dealing with our insurance adjuster. Before committing to Keller, I confirmed that they had the proper insurance coverage -- something you can't be too careful about, and something many contractors too often neglect. Keller has coverage from A-rated, national branded insurance companies, and was more than happy to provide this proof of coverage. Brendan then showed up a few days later to put temporary protection over the sections of roof with missing shingles -- but not the ugly blue tarp you sometimes see. The actual product name escapes me, but this was some kind of sealant that came in rolls. Once installed it kept out the rain (and snow) but it also nearly matched the color of the existing shingles, so it wasn't obtrusive in any way. On the day of the installation, the crew was at our house and ready to go by 8AM. While they were removing the old roof, a lift truck showed up and quickly hoisted the shingle bundles onto the roof. It was only after they were done that I realized how much time this saved the crew. By not having to haul the shingles up themselves they could spend all their time getting the roof ready. By about 9:30 they had the old shingles and tar paper off. Importantly, they hung tarps from the roof that draped right to the ground to protect the bushes from collecting nails, etc. that fell from the roof, making for an easier and faster clean up at the end of the job. By around 11 AM they had all the new felt underlayment installed and were ready to place the shingles. The new shingles and ridge caps were installed and the roof complete by 3PM. The crew was meticulous with clean up, and didn't leave a trace. They were gone by 3:30PM that day. For context, a house three doors down is also getting a new roof, installed by another contractor. They've been at the neighbor's house for four days -- and counting -- with a dumpster in the driveway the entire time. I can't speak to the quality of that contractor's finished product, but would you want someone banging away on your roof for 4 plus days...with a dumpster blocking your driveway the entire time? Keller was finished by 3:30 PM on the same day they started. To sum up, great experience, highly recommend, and will be using them again when it's time to have the trim done -- without question.
Description of Work: Keller removed the old roof and installed a new one, inclusive of ice and water shield on gutter edges, new pipe flanges, baffled ridge runner and ridge caps. Specifically, Timberline HD, algae resistant shingles in "Mission Brown" color were used to replace original roof which was significantly damaged during Hurricane Sandy.

Please see the "services performed" section. In short, the work went quickly, on time and my property was clean when they left.
Description of Work: Due to town permitting and setback requirements rather than installing a deck in a conventional manner we decided to pour a concrete slab and install a deck over it (this was legally done with no permit required as a conventional deck was considered more permanent!-------go figure!). George J Keller and Sons (in this case Dan, one of the sons) had done exceptional work following a tree falling and grazing our house and I asked them for an estimate to do the job. While not cheap, I knew that the job would be done well, within estimated time frame and neatly. The mason that was sub-contracted did a very nice job with the slab and retaining knee wall and Keller put down the deck we wanted and it came out beautifully. They took steps that would extend the life of the deck, made cut outs that you can not see and the whole job looks fantastic. I recommended them t my neighbor for a front walk and the replacement of all their windows. My neighbor is very happy with the work and has thanked me for the recommendation.

When we had hurricane Irene come through we have a flat roof on one side of the house, it's a flat roof around three or four feet wide and it's around a very tall chimney, and we had some leaking around the flashing that they put on, so they fixed the roof on that side. We have similar problems on the other side where we have a dormer, which is over the garage, and we had some leakage from the main part of the house to that part where the garage and dormer are, and they fixed that as well. They did a good job; they did what they had to do and we've had no leaking since. It was ripped out at October/November and they were very busy. They didn't get the one side done until January/February and we had the other side done in March. They were professional, they wrote everything down, they called when they said they weren't going to be able to do it for a while, it was right on target. I would recommend them.

I received a return call 48 hours after calling from George Keller. I explained I needed a new flange (sealing cap around a vent pipe that sticks out of the roof). He told me over the phone without looking at my roof, that I needed a new roof. I explained that my roof was 17 years old and I had a 30 year warranty roof that was in good shape. He said I should call another roofer, he had enough work for 6 weeks and was only interested in replacing my entire roof. "Thanks alot". When I do need a new roof, I certainly will not be call this company.

We were 100% satisfied from beginning to end. Dan emailed us a clear and comprehensive written quote, and took the time to answer all of our questions. The start date of the job was delayed a couple of times due to rain, but Mike and Dan did a good job of keeping us informed about their schedule. And their crew doing the work was clearly very experienced, and did a good job of cleaning up after the work was completed. The reason I rated them "B" on pricing was because they gave us the highest quote of the 4 prices we obtained. But I also have to say that we did get the level of service and expertise that we paid for, and we are getting a price from them for siding, windows and doors. We would certainly recommend them.

They were great. They got here right when they said they were going to and they started working right away. They hung up tarps all around my house to collect nails, shingles and all that stuff. It was noisy. The guy apprised me of what was going on through the whole process. They asked about a weathervane and I told them to take it down. They were very careful and took the whole thing apart and tried to save the weathervane. He was good. They would escort me when I went out so I didn't get shingles on my head. My yard looked better when they left than it did before. The roof looks great. They came to pick up the dumpster the next day and after they loaded it, the guy swept every little last piece of debris. He swept it in a dustpan. You would not have known that I had my roof done. It was amazing and I was very impressed. They went around with a magnetic thing to get all the nails. I didn't find a single piece of shingle or anything. I am going to have them do my deck.

Everything about our experience with George J. Keller & Sons was top notch. When we reached out to them for an estimate, they got back to us right away. At the estimate appointment, they came out, listened to us, took a thorough look around, and then came back with what they work would entail. Everything was explained very clearly and they answered all of our questions about what they do, how they do it, materials, etc. When we were ready to proceed with the job, we set up a date. Of course, that morning was very cloudy and looked like it was going to rain. They assured us that the storm was going to pass and that it was okay to proceed. I have to say I was very nervous and Mike, the man in charge of the project, explained how in cases like this they only work on one section and tarp the rest. He was very patient and treated my concerns very respectfully. When we came out to check progress on the job (which was often) we were never made to feel like we were bothering them. And of course, they were right -- the clouds passed with no rain. The whole process was very efficient. The crew worked hard and carefully. The house was tarped, the shingles were craned onto the roof, the dumpster came, and off they went. Quite a few sheets of plywood needed to be replaced, so the job took two days instead of one. When they returned on the second day, they worked just as diligently with no rushing. Great care was given to cleaning the work area. In fact, they asked me for some paper towels and Windex to clean the skylights from the top. That really impressed me. And our gutters did not suffer any damage through all of this. We are very happy with the work that was done. Although it was expensive, we felt like we paid for a quality job (materials, installation, warranty, etc) all around. We would definitely recommend them. Everything was handled very professionally.
Description of Work: We were in need of a new roof as the old one was leaking on our heads (literally). Obviously, this is a big project, a big expense, and we really wanted the job done right. In addition to the roof (fairly large -- we have a ranch), we also have three skylights over our porch that needed replacing. Work also included the installation of an attic fan, two bathroom vents, and flashing on the chimney. Our gutters are fairly new and we wanted to ensure that they were not damaged during the process.

We called to get estimates and they sent someone out pretty quickly. We wanted a quote to do a repair on a garage of our old home and an entire new roof for our new home. We called four companies for estimates, all of which we got from Angie's List. The guy looked at the repair needed for the one home and told me he would go directly to the next house to take a look. He told me that I should have a quote within a day or two. About four days later I sent him an email asking for the estimate. He said he hadn't gotten to look at the site for the new roof yet, but that he would send the quote for the repair that night. It was considerably higher then the other proposals that we received ($2,700 vs $300). The next day he contacted me to ask for the address of the home that needed a new roof. Said he couldn't find it. After a few more days with no quote, I sent him an e-mail saying not to bother since I had already hired another company. Interestly, I still get emails from him from time to time with requests to consider them. It appears to be an automated email, so I'm sure he just hasn't updated the file saying that we were not going to use them.I'm happy to say that we were very pleased with the workmanship of the company we did go with.

Dan Keller returned my call promptly (1st out of 3 people called) and was extremely professional, informative and helpful. He explained all of my options, the benefits of each, and offered to drive past and provide a free estimate. Any aspect they did not handle, they provided advice and a resource for it. I found this experience to be wonderful, and I look forward to the estimate and to hiring George Keller and Sons to install a power fan into my attic. Once I hire them and have the work completed, I will update this review; however, I can foresee a job well done in my future!

We had our old wood deck and some wooden railing in the front of the house replaced with TimberTech material. Overall it was a great experience. They were a few thousand more than my other estimates but I live by the adage that you get what you pay for and in this case I was correct. The guys that refinished the floor of my deck were exceptional as they measured and made sure things were level and safe. I was very impressed with the way they secured things and you could tell they did this many times and had a lot experience. I would suggest that maybe they could have a checklist of those things that go along with a deck like a gate etc, be on a checklist so they can be documented that way as opposed to just talking with a knowledgeable salesman since some things are lost in the conversation.
Description of Work: Company is very professional and good to work with. When the salesman came by, we discussed a few things which to be included and unfortunately he did not write them down. The company on good faith included those things in the original price. The craftsman were exceptional and you can tell they "knew" decks. Except for a damaged peach tree in the yard, they kept everything tidy and were extremely courteous which was a refreshing change from other contractors I have had in the past. My Wife noted that when one of them accidentally hit his finger with the hammer, instead of cursing, he said "Wow that hurt". Again the work they did was exceptional, they were professional and the deck looks great.

I received 4-5 estimates from very reputable roofing contractors (per Angie's List), and George J Keller & Sons won me over with their detailed explanation of process and expertise. For example, a couple of the roofers recommended a ridge vent AND an attic fan, but Dan explained that these 2 working together could actually produce a negative effect (which I confirmed after a little internet research). They explained the process in elaborate detail and answered many questions that I had (for example - 30lb felt vs. 15 lbs felt vs. GAF Deck Armor). I was also impressed with the removal/installation process. They used big tarps to cover all of the landscaping around my house (which I haven't seen a roofer do in my neighborhood) - and other than finding a few shingle scraps afterwards - cleanup was impeccable. Costs were also right in-line. I did get one estimate that came in slightly cheaper, but it felt more important to pay a little more to work w/ someone I trusted to get it done right. I also received a couple of estimates that were a thousand or 2 more. I decided to upgrade to Deck Armor and get a slightly better warranty, and still came in well-below the other estimates I received.. I'd highly recommend these guys if you're looking for a roof. Get a couple of estimates until you get a nice range - but George J Keller & Sons will likely be the obvious choice.

I chose Keller over the nearest competitor, who I won't name, because I felt they were being straight with me in the quote process. The other outfit tried to convince me that their (initially) cheaper price, which included a lower-end underlayment, was really equivalent, when it clearly wasn't. And they also tried to tell me that we had to upgrade to a fancier shingle line to get the color we wanted. On both of those matters, Keller gave me answers that I trusted far more. They quoted clearly on the upgraded underlayment, and were clear about the advantages. And they also let me know that the color we wanted was a premium color, and hence did cost a bit extra, but much less of an increment than the other outfit wanted to get us to move up to the top-line product. In the end their quotes were nearly the same, with appropriate adjustments, but I felt that Keller was being far more honest and direct in the process. We were also very pleased with the work. It was delayed, unavoidably, by weather, but they kept us advised as to the schedule changes. They did a great job of protecting plantings around the house and cleaning up afterward (the patio and the gutters wound up cleaner than when they arrived!) And when they had to interrupt the job, because rain moved in unexpectedly, they were very careful about preparing the unfinished portion of the roof to protect it. In all, we were impressed, and we felt like we got a good deal. The end result really looks nice. I would definitely recommend Keller be considered for any job you are planning.
Description of Work: They removed two layers of old roofing, and installed a new roof. They reflashed everything, added new gaskets around some vent pipes that were leaking, and added a cricket to protect the seal around the chimney. The new roof is a substantial upgrade over our previous one, with much improved underlayment, and a ridge vent (we had convectively driven vent fans previously), with a color that is exactly what we wanted, a great match with the shutters we had installed last year. And because they have special certification from the parent company, we have a warranty on the job that is backed by the company instead of only by them.

I no longer considered the contractor due to the events noted above.
Description of Work: I need my deck replaced and started with Angie's List for the same reasons everyone else does. I selected a few contractors based on member comments Keller being one. Keller responded quickly, made an appointment which they were on time for, the salesman was polite and friendly and initially I was impressed enough to have had the mindset after he left that unless his price was obscene I was leaning heavily in thier favor. I was told I would have a quote in 2 to 3 days, a week later still no quote, and no contact from the contractor of a delay. I contacted them asking about the estimate and was given what I believe to be an extremely poor excuse, was told I would have the quote in a couple of hours. Eventually the quote arrived and the price was competitive however, he did not take the time to proof read it as it was contradictory regarding the number of stairs to be installed. Unfortunately, the red flag that had already gone up with the missing quote was too unsettling to ignore. The unsent estimate, the poor excuse provided and the unanswered question of would they have sent the estimate had I not contacted them again was too much. Bottom line is I no longer had faith that they would be reliable or timely if contracted for the work.

Response from George J Keller & Sons LLC
The member first contacted us through Angies List asking if we work in Middlesex County on 5/12. I responded on the same day and let her know that we do. The member then emailed me through our website on 5/13 stating she could meet on the afternoon of 5/17. I emailed her back on the same day asking if a 3pm appointment would be ok. The member responded on 5/14 that 3pm would be good. On 5/17 I was ahead of schedule so we actually met at 2pm. The member and I had a great meeting on a beautiful sunny day. I did state that I would provide the quote within 2-3 days which would bring me to the following Tuesday, 5/22. Since I meet with homeowners all day long I do my paperwork at night and the week after I met with the member I had many evening school activities with my two elementary aged kids. I apologized and explained this to the member when I responded to her email, on 5/24, asking where the quote was. I apologize if the member feels this is a "extremely poor excuse" but it is the truth. I was wrong not to email her with an update on Tuesday to let her know I was behind schedule with my paperwork. I will do a better job of getting my paperwork done faster or will do a better job of following up if I fall behind on my paperwork. Thank you for the oppurtunity to quote your project and I hope you have a great deck built.

It is rare that you meet an incredibly honorable and thoroughly professional individual. Brendan responded immediately to my initial request for a siding consultation, sent out a confirming email and showed up on time with an iPad full of sample work. And then after listening to what I thought I wanted/needed, he talked me out of putting on siding which would have cost upwards of $30k and instead told me about some home remedies for woodpeckers (the reason for my siding) and recommended a reliable painter to me instead. I was blown away by his honesty. I will definitely recommend them - and if I need any work done - I will call without hesitation! A memorable experience!

It was one of my most favorable experiences with a contractor in over 33 years of home ownership. From the initial inspection and estimate provided by Brendan to the actual instillation, everything was done in a professional and timely manner. Brendan was quite thorough in his inspection, took the time to explain things in great detail and provided a very competitive estimate which was the exact price due at time of completion. The contractor's crew led by Mike arrived at 8 a.m. and began immediately. The crew was extremely organized and efficient and very polite and cordial. The property was properly protected before they began removing two prior roofs and from there it went smoothly. By 2 p.m., the entire roof of the house and shed were complete, the clean-up was thorough and meticulous and by 3 p.m. the dumpster was removed. There was a follow-up the next day by several individuals to ensure things went well. Even a few neighbors said they were impressed on the final product and noted the organization and efficiency of Mike's crew and the cleanliness of the property when they were completed. I would highly recommend to others and would definitely use them again in the future, if a need should arise.

The estimate process went very well. They came back very fast(2 days ) with their estimate. Their price seemed a little high, but I have to wait for my other two estimates to be sure. I will update when job is finished.
Description of Work: Called Keller for an estimate. They were very responsive. They gave me all the things I requested from them and had the quote to me in 2 days. Am waiting on 2 others before I decide.

I met with Dan late in 2011. He was very professional, actually climbed up on the roof for an inspection, took photo's etc. We discussed the issue, the re-framing and the potential to replace the side roof as well. I rec'd an email a few days later with an estimate and list of activities that were included in the estimate. We didn't engage them until late March. At that point i was told they would probabaly be able to start in a few weeks and they were actually able to start a little earlier. On the first day Bill (carpentry foreman) showed up with another carpenter to begin the reframing. A little while later, a Keller truck showed up with a dumpster....thier own truck and dumpster.....i was impressed. Bill was great to work with....very personable and knowledgable. He walked me thru the approach he was going to take and by the end of the day the troublesome hip was re-framed and sheathed and the ice shield and Tyvek applied. The team was very careful to lay tarps on the ground that would catch material removed from the roof and by the end of the day all waste was in the dumpster. On the second day a van arrived early in the AM with the roofing team. Just as the team arrived, the material truck was in the street ready to unload the roofing materials. This was a no-nonsense team. I don't think it took longer than an hour to remove all the roofing material from the garage roof and start the installation. As the garage was winding down part of the team split off to remove the material on the second roof. Both roofs were completed before lunch as was all the cleanup. Later in the afternoon Bill returned to continue replacement of the wall shingles that were removed for the re-framing and installation of ice shield, flashing, etc. On the third day, the replacement of the shingles were completed and the dumpster was picked up. It hasn't rained yet so can't report on that aspect but i'm confident we'll be fine. All in all, this was an outstanding experience.
Description of Work: Our garage roof was leaking and already had a second layer over the original roof. In addition, the design of the hip roof over the garage was such that all the water going down the hip facing my home ran right into the exterior wall of the house and the original desgn didn't allow for adequate water run-off. We had the hip facing the home reframed, the existing garage roof removed and replaced and an additional side roof replaced.
