I hired Terranova Remodeling as the GC for my full house remodel when we moved to New Jersey. Peter was recommended by a real estate agent we knew and I did call a few of his references from smaller jobs who seemed to like his work. He was the least expensive and was very responsive when it came to giving me a quote. From there it went downhill. The renovation took extremely long and the workmanship was shoddy to say the least. He cut a lot of corners and definitely tried to pull the wool over my eyes on several occasions. Below is a list of things he did wrong or poorly: - Exterior doors were ordered incorrectly and installed incorrectly so that they leak a ton of air and will have to be straightened by someone else. - Interior doors were not installed correctly so that they now hang wrong. - One of his workers sanded over the expensive wallpaper in my powder room so that a whole section had to be re-installed. - He left antique door hardware in a bucket out in the rain for a month (that I had explicitly told him was being re-installed) and I had to polish it all by hand because it was so rusted out and tarnished. - Tiling was done and had to be re-done when it was not done satisfactorily resulting in use of extra materials. - Our dryer venting was not done correctly and had to be reworked by another contractor because it kept getting clogged - The bathroom fan was venting directly into the attic insulation. When I asked about this specifically said it was venting to the outside. - He cut corners by using mdf strips instead of wood moldings and back-bands. - The job site was generally a total mess and he could never find stuff. This resulted in extra purchases such as hardware and paint because the originals could not be located. - He borrowed and used my materials and tools: drills, ladders etc without asking. And he lost my painters ladder. - He never wrote anything down so I constantly had to print out new punch lists and lists of paint colors for him. - He ecommended several subcontractors who were related to him (unknown to me at the time) and who did an even worse job (the bathtub overflow was installed incorrectly and leaked twice which resulted in re-doing my kitchen ceiling twice, and the HVAC was installed completely incorrectly). I have had several contractors in the past who did a good job so I consider myself both knowledgeable and not super picky, but this was a really horrible experience. If I had not been there to guide him and pick up his mistakes as he went along it would be even more of a disaster. I have had a contractor and various specialists come in to fix the mistakes that he made and they have all commented on what a "bootleg" job was done and how it is incredible that we were able to actually pass inspections. Had I lived here longer and had more time I would definitely had done more research and would not have used him. Hopefully this review will help someone else in the process.
