Called the 1-800-Home Depot number and asked for an installation estimate. 1800 heaters called back within an hour and scheduled a home inspection the next day with a 4-hr window. They provided a verbal estimate of $1500.
Two knowledgeable and professional workmen arrived as promised, inspected the existing installation, noted two potential code problems (gas piping and vent) and quoted $1,514. Price included their obtaining a township permit ($30,), procurement and transport and installation of the new unit and removal/disposal of old unit.
They shut off the water supply, hooked up their pump and garden hose and drained the unit thru my garage to the driveway. ( My house is on a slab and has no basement, sump or slop sink). They had the proper copper fittings for the water piping, replaced the offending flex gas connection with a code-compliant steel pipe cut to size. They filled the new unit, lit the pilot, adjusted the temperature setting and cleared the lines.
When everything was to their satisfaction their senior plumber, Ralph T., provided a full explanation of what they had done. Identified the gas and water shutoffs and took me thru the pilot protocol and sensor operation so that I was comfortable handling any future emergency. ...

"Thank you very much for the great review. Ralph is a great example of our above and beyond team. We appreciate your recognition of our team. Thank you for becoming a member of our family and for your trust in us! Let us know if we can help with anything else in the future. Kirk [email protected]"
This was done as a sub-contractor to Home Depot (who then subbed the job out to 1-800-Heaters, who hired AKT Installations of East Hartford, CT.
Dumb & Dumberer arrived at my house more than hour late.
The water heater had a small dent in it and they arranged to give me a $50 credit for that.
They chipped my deck stair bringing the new water heater in.
They dripped rusty water on my carpet taking the old one out ("nah, we don't need a drop-cloth!")
They put rubber marks on the carpet from the under-inflated tires of the dolly ("nah, we don't need a drop-cloth!")
I was able to scrub both out with carpet cleaner (they offered, but by then I did not trust them)
They disconnected my washing machine discharge hose from the drain pipe so that they could pump out the old water heater, and forgot to put it back in when they left, so that we got 1 1/2 inches of water in our basement the next time we did laundry!
I called Home Depot for some consideration, but they put me off to 1-800-Heaters, who said I had to call the installer. (NOTE: The whole idea of using Home Depot was to NOT get this kind of run-around!.) I eventually got to someone at the installer after a few phone calls with no callback. They did offer to have somebody come and clean up the basement, but I had already done it by then. They did refund most of the installation charge.
