Gold Medal technician and service advisor stated $9800 for new AC for a family member whose unit stopped working. Second opinion from Carrano Air, Dayton NJ and technician found a part stopped working, replaced it and saves my relative $9800. Would call again if services were needed

Was very Happy with Carrano. We needed to replace the HVAC system (furnance and AC) and evaluated multiple quotes. Right through quote, evaluation and installation Carrano worked with us. I am a person who likes to research and get multiple quotes for expensive projects and Herb from Carrano did an awesome job to help me understand the various options. Was also happy that Carranno was able to suggest some minor ductwork to alleviate some bad design in the original construction. Was able to negotiate and arrive at, what I thought, was a reasonable price point for a specification that suited us. The work itself was scheduled and completed perfectly in Sep, 2016. The folks who came in did an awesome professional job and left the premises clean. The installation was in a CrawlSpace. The work was done on a permit that Carrano pulled in their name. Herb had warned us that Plainsboro Township took a long time to transfer the permit to our name, which was so true. We followed up multiple times with both Carrano and the Township to push this. Am still not clear of the process, but it sure tool a long time. We finally got the papers towards the end of Dec, 2016 and scheduled the inspections in Jan, 2017. The first inspection failed, so to some minor external electrical work. Apparently one of the cables conduits was tied to the refrigerant line and was as per code. Carrano fixed it the very next day. In-between we had an issue with the new Thermostat and Carrano was quick to come over and help us with that. I must say that we were impressed with the after sale service that we received from Carrano. Just call them and they are very courteous and supportive. So far so good with the Goodman units.

The window of time I was given was for 10AM – 12PM on Tuesday 12/27. I was also told that I should expect him closer to 10AM as I was 2nd on the schedule for the day. At 11:15 I still had not heard anything so I decided to call in to doublecheck the technician would make it during the window that was given. The person on the phone told me, yes, absolutely, he will be there in 20 minutes. At 11:55 AM I received a call from the technician stating he will be there in 35 minutes. Obviously I have an issue with that so I called in to the operator again. Her response was “well things happen” and that they “usually give a 4 hour window.” So I guess her logic was I should have expected him to be late? She later explained that the previous customer called the technician back into the house, but to be frank, as a customer, I only care that the promise that was made was not met. She also let me know he would probably be here in closer to 20 mins, not 35. Well, that was a lie. The technician showed up at exactly 12:30PM, which to his credit was truthful and fair to me. The technician’s name was Kareem and I could tell he was a little hesitant because I was fairly unhappy over the phone When he got there he did apologize for being late. He began working right away as I started telling him the issues we were having. After about half an hour he came back and told me he could not find anything that was wrong so there was nothing he could do or I would have to pay more because the initial $90 only covers the first half hour of diagnostics. At that point I told him I thought that to me it seemed like an issue with the thermostat as most of what I had described to him earlier on had to do with the thermostat not sensing the correct temperature and turning on for too long. He had to call his supervisor to walk him through how to troubleshoot that. It turns out the thermostat had been set for gas/oil heat when we have electric pump heat. He made some changes on the thermostat to account for this. He then proceeded to tell me that pushing a few buttons on the thermostat to change this setting added another $100 on to my bill. That set my total at $190. Hearing that, I asked that he please remove the charge and set this back to the initial settings. He confirmed with his supervisor that this would be OK and reset the thermostat to the factory settings. (For anyone reading this who wants to know how to make this change on their thermostat, here is the website for the guide, it is on page 7: [*** Link removed ***] The thermostat is a Honeywell/Gemaire TH4210d. I made the setting changes shown in this guide, and those recommended in this article: [*** Link removed ***] “The standard for electric heat is nine cycles per hour.” Unfortunately it is an unseasonably warm day today so I won’t be able to fully test if this fix worked until the weather cooperates. Overall Kareem was a very pleasant worker though I am not sure he had all the experience required to really troubleshoot the issue we were having. I really appreciated his honesty after being somewhat misled by the central operations at Carrano. I was also very unpleasantly surprised by the ridiculous pricing for a simple task that I was able to complete myself in about 7 minutes.

We've been customers of Carrano's for over 20 years, buying our units from them and having all service done by them.  They are professional, courteous, responsive and back their work. Our immediate issue required two trips to solve - in both cases they were at our house within a few hours of our call (even tho this was a VERY busy time for them) and our technician (Anthony) was incredible.  He also made it clear right up front that there would be no charge for the 2nd visit since they had just been out a few days before (one of their original wiring repairs became "undun").

they took a long time to finish job tech leader was frustrated at the wiring and his team member. He said to leave us the old thermostat and did not.
Since completion of job ive been emailing them every week or 2 to get the township permit app so i can schedule inspection and was given the run around. township told me its been ready but the contractor didnt come pay for it and pick it up. carrano rep then promised me he will take care of it next week only to be give me the excuse a week later they cut the wrong check amount so it took him another 2 weeks to finally pick it up. However they have forgotten to submit for the breaker panel job despite of me asking them to make sure that part of it was submitted back in June. The rep whom I won't name here is very good at apologizing without answering my question on how much longer I would have to wait. Instead he told me to wait until I receive it before calling inspection for both jobs. So to this day I don't have the status on the breaker job permit app and how thats going to complicate things should inspections not pass. I will not recommend this contractor and if this doesnt get resolved will have to complain to home depot.

"[Members Name Removed], thank you for your review and certainly for using Carrano as you are a valued customer. You have used us many times in different residences thru NJ and we hope that continues. We try to keep our customers in mind and to provide timely and quality service. Sometimes during the heat of the summer challenges get in the way to help everyone all at once. We do not subcontract and reach as many folks in need as we can! I am glad you are somewhat pleased with our service and installation and it was very nice speaking with you about your concerns. Thanks!"

I am updating this review because it is now December and I have still not received receipts. 6 months to get a receipt? This is beyond "a little behind". I don't like that I've paid for something and never got an itemized receipt.

I felt that this company is fair and honest. My AC unit is about 15 years old and I thought it may be too small for the area I am trying to cool. I was fully prepared to purchase a new unit. The technician assured me that the unit was fine and with a new relay switch and cleaned coils, it would work perfectly. I paid $211 for the consult (no free estimates) and was told that they would come out the following afternoon to make repairs, which would cost approximately $400. I waited around until after 3 PM, but no one came out. I called and was told I didn't have an appointment scheduled. I made an appointment for the following morning. The tech came out and did the work and everything is working fine. The price ended up being $505. Although I feel $700 was a bit high, They could have told me my unit was shot and charged thousands. I am still waiting for email receipts with a breakdown of charges. they said that they are a bit behind on invoicing, so I will give a little more time. It's been a little over a week now. All in all, they did a good job. I will use again and I will refer them to friends and family.

"[member name removed] thanks for your comments and input. We will try and do better with our communication as some of the issues we did not follow up with some simple instructions to you. Firstly, we do give free estimates on installation. However, somehow a technician was sent to you as this is a billable service. The service call was dispatched and set up as a technical diagnosis which requires a certified tech, not a salesman. Furthermore, the technician can email your copy and receipt at the time of service when you are signing the service invoice. I apologize for the confusion and mixed signals as sometimes things can get hectic throughout the day for everyone. Thanks for your patience and continued business!"

Since we've had Carrano Air install these two units, there have been ZERO problems. The placing of the inside units was done with the greatest of care and efficiency. They took out an old, non working through the wall A/C, disposed of it and covered the opening carefully and then placed the inside unit unobtrusively over the old opening.
After several negative experiences with assorted contractors we have finally come across a company that not only makes promises but also KEEPS PROMISES !
A very friendly, polite crew and an exciting result. Great experience, Thank you, Mr. Carrano, for having a company that leaves a happy customer after completion of the job.

The price included both the devices.  The experience was exceptional.  The 3 or 4 guys that came out put the two devices in on the outside and then they installed the inside units.  We had an old through-the-wall air-conditioning in one room and they took that out.  They filled in the opening very carefully and very properly.  They put the devices in and did the electrical work.  They got the permits.  They did a really really good job.  The owner came by a day or so afterwards to make sure everything was good.  He checked it himself.  He ran it.  It was a really totally good experience unlike most contractors we have had.  The price was very good.  The quality was perfect.  Their responsiveness was excellent.  We are going to use them again in the future.  We are going to have one of those generators put in.

However, all summer long, the air conditioning would not cool the house even though it ran almost continuously.  They sent a service man who indicated that the A/C units did not have an adequate charge of Freon.  He "fixed" it and left but the units functioned the same.  The next service man said that the A/C units contained too much Freon.  He again "fixed" it without any change.  This occurred a few more times until they sent another service man who found that the units had been incorrectly wired.  Now the units worked (although the summer was over). We contacted Carrano's and asked that our warranty be extended since we had had so many issues with the units, were well into our warranty period and were unsure that they would continue to work well.  We also asked for some refund for our huge electric bills since the units, although not cooling, had run continuously all summer.  We never heard from them.We only recently found that while installing the A/C units and the water heater, they ran an A/C condensate line and an overflow line from the water heater into the sump in the basement.  In doing so, they cut large holes into the lid of the sump.  However, the sump is also part of our radon abatement system.  With the holes in the lid, the system was no longer air tight, thus rendering the radon abatement system inoperative. All that I can say is never again.
