R. A. Nichols Plumbing , Heating & Cooling

The water to my house had been shut off due to a service line leak. I called one company, who was highly rated, and a person showed up with no tools but somehow determined it would cost between 8500 and 11000. So I called RA Nichols based on reviews I read. The person that showed up had the tools needed and explained everything to me. I got a fair estimate, which was much less than the first company, and decided to use them. All I can say is WOW. They got to work immediately and did a wonderful job. The gentleman they sent knew exactly what he was doing and it showed. I highly recommend them.

I can't recommend R. A. Nichols highly enough. Anthony was very accommodating in scheduling the free estimate and the job itself, in addition to being very thorough and informative throughout the process. Of particular note, one of the parts for our requested brand of air conditioner was back ordered, which would have delayed the project 2 weeks. Anthony called upon his supplier network and was able to get us a better brand unit, for the same price, on the original installation date. It's clear when you're working with a contractor of integrity, and R. A. Nichols is exactly that.

Our main sewer line was clogged on Friday evening of the July 4th weekend. We called around and got estimates of about $375 - $400 plus the emergence call fee of about $75 to snake the main from the basement to the street. Unfortunately no one was available that evening. One of the plumbers suggested Nichols because they're always available. We called and they came that night. Gave us a whole long speech about the work not being guaranteed and then went out to the truck to get the price. They came back in with a "price book" and told us it would cost about $1000.00. More than double the other prices we were quoted. We were desperate so we agreed to the price. Anyway, they snaked the drain, it took about 20 minutes, that's $50.00 a minute, and it worked properly when they were done. The guys were very nice but we felt ripped off.

I had R.A. Nichols come out to my house to give me an estimate for a new gas line for a stove. I was given a discounted estimate of 1,030.00. A few days later I had another plumbing company come out and do the same. The estimates entailed the same exact work to be done. The second estimate was 460.00. I went with the second company, they were very responsive and professional and I am very happy with the work. Still amazed that R.A. Nichols "discounted" estimate was more than double that of another company for the same exact work.

John was prompt and professional. He assessed the situation and talked me through my options. He then installed a new toilet. 

Very well. Work was completed when they said it would be, the crew was professional. The repairs have been in service for a week now and no issues with them.

They came out several days later to perform the work. They dug up parts of the basement flooring and then I received a call to come see them before they did anything else. I went home from work and when I got home, they told me they could not dig up the floor into the corner because of the water meter that was there. But that water meter was there when they gave me the estimate. They told me they wanted to rerun the line from the basement around another way instead of doing what they quoted. They told me it would be about $18,000 to run it around the basement and out to the street.
Then I said I did not have that kind of money and he said they needed an additional $500 to pay for the work they had done that day! But I had already paid them $900 and all they did was dig up part of the floor.
I had gotten estimates from three other services that were close to theirs of $3000 but went with them because they were a large operation and seemed professional.
I was really disappointed and out $900 when I could have used another plumber and had that towards the repair!!

Before they were even contracted to do the work they spent a lot of time going over the jobs they'd be doing for us. They emailed us with information on the different types of sewer back flow systems and which ones they felt would best fit our needs and situation. Once hired they completed the entire job, rerouting the sump pump drainage, installing the sewer back flow, and hooking up the water operated back up for the sump pump, in one day. They also discovered that one of our sewer pipes had a crack in it, something that we wouldn't have become aware of until it caused us big trouble, and repaired that for us. When we discovered a problem with the placement of the outside sump pump drainage, they returned the next day and corrected that promptly and free of charge. We were completely satisfied with their professionalism and their work and will call them again. (we actually have already for another plumbing problem)
