The crew was extremely professional, and they cleaned after themselves every evening. They also conducted a magnetic sweet before they finished the job.
They work quickly. We signed the contract on Saturday. AFS applied for the permit on Monday, and they started a few days later. They completed the job in a week - on schedule.
We would highly recommend AFS to anyone looking for a reliable and professional contractor. We plan on using them in a few years when we redo our rood.
#1 in our book. Call them, you won't be disappointed.
There were multiple problems however from day one. First I never received a sample of the siding, so after waiting a week when I needed to match up my stucco for the chimney and foundation, I had to drive 70 miles round trip to get a sample from my order from the roofing warehouse. Ron insisted that the stucco work be done before the siding job, so I had that done.
Incorrect siding color was ordered. I received Everest - a bluish gray vs Victorian Gray which is a light dove gray. They offered to change it but by then I had already had the stucco matched up to the sample and applied to the house, so I went forward hoping my shutters would blend or at worst I would have to paint them a different color.
Unfortunately there was a huge communication break down between Ron and the siding crew and I ended up having to watch every move they made to ensure mistakes and damage would be limited. I decided I needed to do this after I noticed Carlos and his crew banging the nails over onto the old tar paper once the shakes were removed instead of removing the tar paper and nails. They did remove it as requested once I told them to. When I saw that half of my sheathing had some degree of mold, I told them to stop because my insurance would have to be notified and the wood would have to be replaced. They said the wood was fine and it was only black in some places b/c of the tar paper. Long story short, I could smell the mold from 10' away and my insurance agent agreed.
After 2 weeks of struggling to find a contractor who would remove and replace the wood, the new sheathing was up. I was living under a tarp for a while, but Carlos and his crew returned in a timely manner to begin applying the new siding. They got half way around the house and I realized it wasn't going to line up with the kitchen addition. At first, Ron said we never made an agreement to lower the line of the house, but I reminded him my friend was there the day we discussed it and recalled the conversation. Ron did come to measure it out himself and make some adjustments (they re-sided part of the front also) but when I returned from a doctors appt I noticed the siding did not match up by 1 3/4" on the corner of the house. Jim the owner came to see it himself on a Sunday and agreed it wasn't right. He stated they were not going to redo the whole thing but said once the leader is attached at the corner, it would be hardly noticeable. Because I was so burnt out by now with all the construction problems and errors (there were others along the way), and winter was around the corner, I felt I had no real choice and went along with this.
All in all, I found the workmanship of the siding crew to be less than professional even down to how the caulking was applied. At one point, they placed a rectangular gable vent over a square gable hole which ultimately had to be redone after I was asked to paint the square replacement vent they provided. I literally spent just under 40 hours "supervising" the job. The last thing I asked the siding crew to do was re-attach the deck railing they had unscrewed. Even after I asked them to be sure the screws were countersunk, they chose to do it their way and now the screw heads stick out of the wood and the screw is visible between the rail and and siding because of incorrect placement. Note also, I had to have my mason return- after the siders were gone - to apply another layer of stucco to cover damages done by both the sider and the contractor I hired to remove/replace the sheathing.
Onto the gutters and leaders: After the gutter guy left, I realized they had not installed any gutter guards. I explained to Jim that was one of the things discussed with Ron at the beginning because I live at the edge of the woods and have always had gutter guards. He stated it wasn't in the contract, but after our phone argument, he ultimately did send Mike from USA Gutters back without charge - although this was 2 weeks later and by then I had cleaned the leaves out at least twice. Now 3 weeks later, I noticed 3 out of 4 ground pipes are clogged and I noticed that one of the gutter guys had bent and cracked the PVC pipe leading from the ground in order to reach one of the new downspouts. So there's water near much of my foundation right now and I haven't heard back from the gutter guy despite 3 calls. Jim did respond to my email saying he doesn't think the problem is b/c of the leaves, but that it probably occurred when the shakes were removed. He said I would have to get someone to snake the pipes. I'm hoping he will at least send the gutter guy back to repair the cracked pipe. And I am praying there is no major excavation needed with the pipes.
In all fairness, I must add that after much back and forth (before this current gutter problem), the owner of Affordable Home Services did agree to reduce the contracted price by $1,400 to cover the cost of damages and expenses . Sorry to say this was an awful and costly experience for me. If you decide to go with Affordable for siding, be sure to ask who the crew will be (as there is more than one subcontractor), ask them specifics about various aspects of the job, and be sure to get everything in writing
"I don't really know how to respond to this complaint, In my fifty years in business I have never had anyone say things like this about this company my father started in 1947 We have always provided a quality job for a fair price as you can see by the numerous praises from our previous customers. Affordable never agreed to give a $1,400 discount to this person she took upon herself to do so. You cant expect a guarantee on a job that is not paid in full. If she would like to pay her balance We would be more than happy to honor our Lifetime labor Guarantee Thank you Jim Federle Owner of Affordable Home Services"
After many bad experiences with contractors, I can truthfully say It was actually a pleasure dealing with this company. Jim makes you feel like you are a long time friend. He is honest and stands by his work. The installers started the job two weeks earlier than we expected and that was great. They did a wonderful job and cleaned up everything so that the yard was spotless. When we discovered some scratches on a piece of trim, I just called Jim and he said "no problem, we'll fix it." And true to his word, two days later, his men showed up and replaced the piece. I would most definitely use this company again and recommend them to everyone I know. Terrific experience.
We bought a 1954 built house which was not renovated in the past 25 years.
Jim planned the renovation from updating plumbing, remodeling a half bath to full bath and completely renovated the other full bath. Kitchen was also renovated . The carpets were removed and the hardwood floors were finished. Quality two pane windows and new doors were put in and the interior was painted with colors of our choice.
Existing kitchen was completely gutted and renovated. Kitchen renovation included updating plumbing and electric, installing ceramic tiles on floors and good quality cabinets and granite countertop was installed. Remodeling included adding electric oven and dishwasher. Also recessed lights, under cabinet lighting and backsplash was added. Jim's experience really made a difference with the advice that he gave on remodeling that now our kitchen looks classy and timeless.
After half bath was remodeled to full bath, it is more spacious and looks beautiful.
Both bathrooms were completely gutted and new drywall and tiles were installed. New bath tub, toilet, medicine cabinet, exhaust fan and recessed lights were installed. With decorative ribbon entire bathroom looks beautiful.
Jim only used quality materials during the entire project and his team is knowledgeable in handling all types of tasks which you would face when renovating an old house.
They worked really hard to finish all the work on time for us to be able to move in before our apartment lease got over.
Jim also took care of all the permits and we had no issues getting approvals for all the work done.
After we moved in there were some minor things that needed attention and Jim took care of that too.
After all the work was done, the amount paid was the same as the estimate provided at the beginning.
We are happy to have Jim take care of our home remodeling.
Ron came to our home the day we placed a phone call to his company. This individual is a real gentleman with a very professional demeanor and a great listener, which is so very important I believe to homeowners. He intently listened to what we wanted to do with a back porch area to make it more weather-friendly and energy efficient, since it was always very cold in the winter time and extremely hot in the summer time. He recommended replacing the old windows with a brand of window called Polaris, which is a low-E energy window. We decided that we wanted to decrease the space of the windows in the room, i.e., two windows on two sides became one window, and three windows on one side became a two-sided casement window. John, the owner's son, as well as the two of his crew, Anthony and Edwardo, were also very pleasant to deal with. They tried very hard to keep our home neat and clean. We are very conscious about tidiness and that was very important for us.
When the job was done, we inspected their work and only had a few issues that we wanted fixed, which we graciously agreed to do. One of the wooden frames around the windows had a nick and John came back the next day to replace the wood around the window. His reply to me, "That's not a problem. We'll gladly take care of that." I also asked John to make sure that there wasn't a lot of nails and pieces of aluminum in the shrubbery and garden around the circumference of our home due to the fact our pet cats (2) hang out in the gardens and sun themselves and I was afraid they were going to get injured by the debris. John gladly went around and tried to find as many pieces of debris possible to please me in this regard. For which I thanked him.
We had a few issues with the screens' that came with the casement windows which Ron & Jim wholeheartedly agreed to get replaced for us. They told us not to worry, we have a lifetime warranty with these windows, we should be very pleased and if we should ever have a problem, to please call them and they would come out, review the problem and take care of it. Ron came today with the two new screens and it was only then that he asked for final payment. Unbelievable, right? Every one seems to want to have their money right away before everything meets the customers' standards.
Just one more thing: Although I really liked the work crew, I did have an issue with their arrival times for the two days they were at our home. Please ask them to give you a reliable estimate of when they're going to arrive at your home the day they're going to start their job. The first day they came we were told they would be there at 8:30 and they showed up at 10 am; the second day, John told me he would be at our home at 8:30 and arrived at 9:30. He explained that he had to pick up some material for the job. I would not have had a problem if he was going to arrive at 10 am and/or 9:30 but I did get kind of anxious about when and if they were coming due to the fact that we have had issues with other companies that were supposed to show up on a certain day and never did.
the only down side occurred on the day of service. in the morning, i was already up for work but his workers didn't tell me they were going to start. before leaving, i asked if they needed to come in but the worker didn't understand me and didn't come in--and i had to travel for work so i didn't have extra time to explain what jim and i talked about. when i came home, the roof looked great but my attic was a mess. when jim came to get payment, he knocked off a portion of the service price for the inconvenience. he offered to have his workers come to clean the attic but i'm going to do it myself.
in short, jim was great, personable, and professional. his workers worked cleanly outside and did a fantastic looking job on the roof. i would just recommend being home and/or having extra time to talk to them to prevent any messes. i would also recommend the company to anyone i know who needs a roof.
We were braced for the typical "construction experience"...we were sooo wrong!
Jim told us the job would be completed in 3-5 weeks...it was done in 5 weeks. Now don't forget the job was in process from Jan 20 thru Feb 21. We had not one, but several snow storms along the way! I was impressed by the courteous, professional attitude of each of the gentlemen who worked in our home. They always treated us and our home with consideration and respect. They were working every day possible We never felt like they were off on another job and would eventually return as has happened to many of our friends.
Anthony and Ron started with the demolition and installing the new windows one of which is a garden window. The section of the siding of the house had to be replaced. Ron matched it and now you would never know any work was done in that area!
Throughout the entire project Anthony was the ever present right hand man, jack of all trades, expert at many of them. John is the detail man (master carpenter) who hung the cabinets, worked with the tile backsplash and made sure every aspect was sized and placed perfectly.
The attitude of each man is summed up as.... if you say..."it's good enough" ...it isn't! It must be done right or do it over.
Jim, the owner would come virtually each day or speak with me on the phone discussing options and suggestions and concerns we might have as the project progressed. If there was something we weren't completely satisfied with it was changed without hesitation. Jim would tell me he does things in my home with the same concern as he would have in his own home.
I LOVE my new kitchen!!!! It is everything I hoped for and more.
I highly recommend Affordable Home Services as a company and as a group of honest, professional, gentlemen.
