Ed arrived as scheduled to give an estimate for the work. Because we had met with another stair company the day before we already knew what options we wanted, so we did not spend much time here. Ed had the same products to choose from and made the process a lot simplier. We were debating if we wanted to get the treads done or not. We did not think they were in bad shape since they had been resanded and stained when we had our hardwood floors refinished, but they were pine and not meant to be exposed. I am very glad Ed convinced us not to keep them, the staircase would not have looked as good if we kept them and just did the rails.
Ed told us it may take about three weeks for him to get the materials and build the treads, but it was more like 2 weeks. He arrived at around 8:30 am to begin the work with one other person and was finished by 2:30 pm. He put up plastic to block the living room and dining room to limit the amount of dust that would get into those rooms. Be prepared, there is still going to be clean up on your part since he is cutting wood.
Ed does not finish the stairs (paint/stain), and neither did the other company that came. However, Ed reccomended a painter to use. The painter has come by for an estimate and will begin working on the stairs next week, so I will update with more informaiton once that is complete.
I will post pictures when I have a chance. I don't have a before to show how bad our stairs were (originally had carpet and a lot of paint, with original rod iron railings from 1963, that were painted white.
