The product is lovely. The installation was poor and the customer service even worse than poor. Despite our contract stating that all existing layers of flooring would be removed in the applicable areas before the new flooring was installed, the installer subsequently advised us that because the old vinyl tiles were applied with a tar like adhesive, it would be preferable to leave those tiles in place and install the new flooring over them. His rationale, as explained to us, was that we would be tracking tar throughout the house if we removed the old vinyl tiles. We accepted his suggestion based on what he said was 30 years' of experience in flooring installation.
This approach, however, left us with floors that are uneven in height with adjoining rooms and more problematic than that, with a front door that now scrapes across the new flooring. That condition did not exist before the installation of the new floor. Our front door is not very old and worked perfectly before the installation of this flooring.
When we expressed our concern regarding the poor fit of the new floor under the front door, the installer removed some of the old vinyl tiles near the door and re-installed the new flooring there. It did not, however, remedy the problem. He said there was nothing more that he could do and left us with the recommendation that we consult a contractor for advice. We did that, as we were having other work done in the house at that time. The contractor shaved down some of the weather stripping under the door but that too did not solve the problem. The only solution would be to raise the door, which is a major and costly job, or replace the door, which we never intended to do and likewise will be costly.
At our request, the retailer returned to our house on 12/01/2014 to assess the situation. He said that he and the installer would come back together and work on a remedy. He said that he would call me the next week to set up a mutually agreeable time to do this work. It is now January 8th of a new year, over one month later, and I have heard nothing from this retailer
After pricing carpeting in other stores, we came to find that Harty Bros was, at the very least, competitive with the others and we liked that Dean came back to us with a way to save a little money after his initial estimate. The work to replace the carpeting was done in about 7 hours and the two installers put everything back the way it was and did a great job with the installation.
