Overall it was a fairly stress free experience
There were a few areas of sizeable disappointment/frustration/dissatisfaction.....First, lack of clarity on the contract regarding boxes that Allied was to provide for packing (e.g. wardrobe boxes)-----on the day Allied was to pick up my belongings, no wardrobe boxes were delivered despite my understanding that Allied would provide them. That understanding was based on the initial meeting with the sales person as she (at time the estimate was provided) , stood in my closet and mentioned 3 wardrobe boxes would be needed. The terminology on the contract indicated that the homeowner was to provide and pack the boxes, but the manner in which it was reflected thereon was misleading/confusing. I mention this as a word of caution to others about moving contracts so the same thing doesn't happen to them. I asked the movers if they had a wardrobe box on the truck, but they did not. As the movers began loading the truck, I called the coordinator at Allied whom I had been working after I signed the contract and she advised the contract excluded the delivery of wardrobe boxes by Allied. She also suggested I go to a local packing supply store to get one since there were no other Allied trucks in the vicinity of my home that could bring one to my home. I found that response disheartening --- movers are at my residence eager to get the job done, and I did not wish to waste any time/cause them any delays by leaving to buy a wardrobe box that, most likely would not have fit in my small 2 door car anyway. A short while later, the sales rep then called me, offering to bring a wardrobe box, but by that time, I already packed the clothes into small boxes in the best interests of time. There was a large vase that would not fit in any box, and that I planned to pack in the base of the wardrobe box that I thought Allied was providing. Given the misunderstanding about the wardrobe boxes, thankfully Kevin (1 of the 3 Allied movers on site) came up with an alternate solution for the large vase and helped me pack it safely. I was VERY pleased with Kevin's pleasant attitude which clearly showed he WANTED to help me (it was obvious that I was stressed out by the situation). The 3 men who packed up my things on 8/6 were professional, friendly and arrived about 30 minutes EARLIER than originally planned (which is why I gave a favorable grade for "punctuality") --- they also packed 7 mirrors in boxes provide by Allied (as I agreed to contractually), and now that I have my things, they did so with finesse and care (none of those items were damaged).
Also, there was a serious disconnect in communication from the time I signed the contract to final delivery of my belongings to their destination in TN. Especially since Allied is a nationwide moving company, I expected Allied to PHONE ME with updates on timelines, including exact date of pick up (of my things from my home), date of departure from NJ, anticipated ETA in TN, but instead, 98% of the time, any updates provided to me were the sole result of ME INITIATING CONTACT with Allied. I was told a few times that it is the busiest time of year for moving companies, but that would seem to be additional reason for them to keep in close contact with their customers. In a service related industry, the provider (Allied) is ultimately responsible for the customer experience, yet I felt largely that I was driving the process to get things done and, had I not done so, my belongings would have been delivered even later.
The biggest let down of all was that my belongings were to be delivered to TN between 8/8 & 8/19 (per the contract). Around 8/11, I was told my things would be delivered to TN around 8/18 or 8/19. and that either the driver himself or the Allied coordinator would call me back later in the week with a more definitive date. As was the trend during my experience with Allied, no one at Allied called me with the update, so I called them on 8/14 to follow up.I needed some advance notice of dates given the fact that I needed to meet with movers at both my home AND a storage facility, so the eventual delivery of my things was going to take additional coordinating of people, dates and times! The items picked up from my home on 8/6 were taken to Simonik Allied's warehouse in NJ, to be loaded onto a truck at a later date to be driven to TN, date TBD, which I was aware of. However, the update provided to me regarding date of delivery to final destination was that the dispatcher in charge of scheduling the loading of my items onto an Allied truck in NJ went on vacation and said loading was not taken care of by any one else in his/her absence. Therefore, I was told that my things would be delivered AFTER the contractually promised 8/19 date. I responded that I expected a discount on the price for the move, to which the representative responded that was not possible, but I could file a delay claim which, if accepted by Allied, may entitle me to reimbursement of living costs while waiting for my things (e.g.hotel/meals). However, that did not apply to my situation since I was not staying in a hotel.
I have learned some things from this experience, and take some responsibility for misunderstanding the contractual verbiage regarding the wardrobe boxes, but my parents recently completed an interstate move as well, and had a completely different/better experience with another carrier who, a majority of the time, provided my parents with updates on timelines without my parents having to pursue them. Contrary to Simonik Allied in NJ, the local Allied carrier based in Knoxville, TN that received my belongings from the NJ office, contacted me once they received my belongings in their warehouse, and promised delivery on Thursday. The rep from the TN office called me back and offered to deliver the items a day early on Wednesday since she wanted me to have a better experience (I had told her of the delays caused by the NJ office), and I was very impressed with the communication from the TN Allied division.
We were quoted for 19K pounds and one truck. However they drastically under quoted us (which i hear is standard procedure to gain the business). We were charged overtime and they had to make 2 trips even thought the truck should have held 23k pounds and we only had 19k pounds according to them.
We were also charged almost $1000 additional for this even thought the sales person said he would "take care of it". Rob Stephan was the sales person who mis quoted us and did nothing to make it right.
We also had our favorite and very expensive table, the only piece we asked them to be extra careful with, dropped and damaged, in addition to another piece.
Terrible service, totally dishonest company and no effort to make it right. These guys move and store things for a living and were not sure how they can be SO inaccurate in quoting moves.
Should have known there would be problems from the beginning...
To start with, we were not provided a timely estimate (took approx one week more than we were told). His estimate was the same as another we had gotten from another company, though for 5 men instead of 4 with the other company.
When the final info came through a week later (and approx 2.5 weeks before our move), i noticed that he had us scheduled for a 1 day pack and move, which i knew to be impossible. Called/emailed to clarify. no response back for several days. was told, "no problem with the one day pack and move, trust me, we do it all the time..."
Called company about 2 weeks before the move to find out what time we should expect them - was told we weren't on the schedule...what? we called our coordinator directly who said, "not sure who you spoke to but you are on the schedule, i just checked."
4 days before the move - got a call saying we weren't on the schedule, the coordinator forgot to put us on it. the woman who called (who was helpful), also didn't understand the one day pack and move, she said not possible. isn't that what i said?? she said she would work with us and was able to find a crew to pack one day and move the next on the original day. The only reason it worked out was because of her.
Packing crew - overall horrible job, mixed up boxes, mislabeled things, threw hanging clothes in small boxes instead of wardrobes, kitchen stuff mixed with toys, absolutely no organization. i could have done it myself. Also, wrapped very carefully my kids school pencils, but could care less to appropriately pack delicate things (one item was broken which was wrapped in thin paper and stuffed like junk.) Would not recommend getting packing services from them.
Moving crew - overall did a very good job. There were a few things damaged, we had full insurance so those were fixed or reimbursed.
Cost - because of our inconvenience, we were given a 10% discount. Frankly didn't make up for the aggravation.
Damages - sent in our claim, never heard back. checked in 3 weeks later, they sent out someone to repair what could be repaired, he did an excellent job. We were reimbursed for the rest. other than having to follow up with them, overall not bad.
Overall: would not recommend. unfortunate because very bad service secondary to horrible experience with moving consultant which poorly reflects on the company as a whole, rather than the individual movers. packers did a terrible job as well.
