Our house was flooded as a result of Hurricane Sandy. We needed to get the demo work done immediately and were greatly relieved when our contractor-neighbor agreed to help us out. We proceeded without a contract and without a written or verbal estimate because we were led to believe the price would be fair. BIG MISTAKE.
Job consisted of gutting four feet of walls, removing floors and sub-floors throughout the house and removing lower cabinets in kitchen. The township picked up all debris free of charge.
When the job was halfway completed, we were asked for a $4,000 payment, leading us to believe that the final bill would be about $8,000.00. Instead, we were charged a total of $19,400.00 ( after being given a $4,000 credit for work completed before M&M got involved). Only after learning from other professionals what this job should have cost did we realize we had been cheated.
Lesson learned: Never have work performed without a written contract!
