"Please let me know who you were working with. I see no evidence that we did not respond"
"Hi [Member Name Removed] My name is Donna Scherer please call me today. I would love to get you on our schedule for a estimate for landscaping and a new irrigation system. Also please let me who you spoke to yesterday in my husbands company. I would be very happy to make an appointment for Ken to come out and give you a quote for irrigation, and one of our landscape designers to also meet with you. Sorry for the misunderstanding .We are very busy but not anywhere near not giving estimates to install the work down the line. Hope to hear from you soon. I am at 908 359 1898 extension 2 Thank You"
On time and did a good job.
Only complain would be that they did not indicate prior to coming for the estimate that they would charge if services were not performed.
The good: In Dec. '14, they cut out all of the small trees, bushes, and weeds from around the house (9 small stumps remained at this time). They also removed a 50 foot birch tree but that stump also remained. The proposal specifically identified an additional cost of $250 for the birch stump to be ground down so I decided to hold off until the spring. At this time, the plan was to use their services during the spring and summer so they could install new landscaping in the areas that were bare. I did not want to do all of the work in the spring because I did not want the large expense all at once. In April '15, I received another proposal from the salesman/designer to install new landscaping in the backyard. I signed the proposal and they were to plant 8 new trees, power wash a retaining wall, and remove three stumps in the yard. I exchanged emails with the designer who confirmed that the small stumps would be removed at no charge because it was included in the cost from the Dec. '14 proposal.
The terrible: They returned to do the landscaping at the end of May. Luckily when they came to my house my wife was home because the installers brought the wrong trees. My wife told the landscape manager (I think that was his title) to take them back and bring the correct ones. I would have assumed that this wouldn't have been a hassle free until the designer called me to tell me that the nurseries don't like when you return items (as if I cared, they brought the wrong items). It wasn't until after I emailed a photo of the wrong trees that the designer lightened up. He said that they would get the correct trees and complete the installation. I was told by the landscape manager that I would be "put on the schedule" in two weeks (not completed in two weeks). I exchanged text messages with the landscape manager who said they were very busy and I would be scheduled shortly. I received the run around from them for weeks and was never put on the schedule.
Nothing happened during the month of June and during the July 4th weekend, I called the landscape manager's phone. However, a new employee answered and said that the previous person was no longer with the company. He quit and they were scrambling to figure out which customers still needed to have their work completed. The new employee came to my house a few days later to assess the work that needed to be done. He said they would complete the job but they were so busy that he didn't know when it would be. In the mean time, I exchanged emails with the designer arguing about the remaining small stumps from Dec. '14 that were not identified for removal on the second proposal in April '15. I informed him that I wanted them removed this time around because they were paid for and I don't know when they would be back to complete the entire project.
After another two weeks of no contact, I called the company to cancel the project because I changed my mind on the design and I was fed up with the lack of courtesy and professionalism. When I called the company, I spoke to the employee who came to my house and told him the reasons why I wanted to cancel. He stated that the previous designer that i had been in contact with also left the company and they have a new designer. He assured me that if we wanted a new design they would give us one and complete the work in a week. This new employee was extremely polite and understanding so I gave them one more chance.
The decent: The new designer came to my house, provided me with a new design/proposal, and worked with me on the adjustments made to the design. This new designer was very professional and did a good job. In this new proposal, we also included the birch stump grinding that was listed in the Dec. '14 proposal for $250. They finally came back the last few days of July to complete the work. For the landscaping that was completed, they did a good job.
The Let Down: They did not grind the birch stump. The new landscape manager said that it should cost more than the $250 that I was quoted in the proposal. He said that they didn't have the machine to do it, either. He also said that he thought about renting a machine to do it because I had such a horrible experience with the company, but if they did if they were to grind the stump I wouldn't be able to plant anything there in the future. At this point, I was mentally done with this company so I let it go.
I wasn't going to post anything here because I didn't want to say anything bad about the company. However, I felt that other Angie's List users should be aware of what happened. Its disappointing that we had to wait almost three months to have our work completed. Its also disappointing that that they wouldn't honor the price that was quoted to me, twice.
On a positive note for the
"Unfortunately we had hired a very bad landscape supervisor this year who for 3 months this Spring had caused us lots of headaches, incomplete jobs, unsatisfied customers and some theft to our company. He is gone now thankfully, and we now have a terrific new landscape manager as well as a great new designer. It is unfortunate that Mr [Member name removed] had to deal with my former disappointing employees. We have been in business for 38 years and this has never happened before to us. Hopefully never again."
