Ed was recommended by a friend. After several estimates, we selected Ed because he reassured us that he was detail-oriented and the price was competitive. From the beginning he hassled us about a start date, trying to fit us into his schedule with little regard for ours. Gutting went well, however he did not clean-up sufficiently each day, leaving us to come home to a mess.
During construction he damaged the sink by scratching it, damaged the wood floor in the bedroom leading to the bathroom, installed several chipped tiles on the floor, did a shoddy job painting, left ungrouted areas exposed, did not tile behind the vanity, did a poor job on the tiled shelves in the shower, did not plan the wall tile height properly (medicine cabinets now extend below tile line with no tile behind them), and broke two special order porcelain outlet covers and switchplates. Within several weeks, the shower started to leak, and grout began to fall out. Within several months, the paint began to peel on the bathroom door.
On a positive note, he constructed trim above the windows to match the existing wood trim and did a nice job constructing a linen closet.
Ed took no responsibility for his errors and only made repairs if they were brought to his attention by us. He is definitely NOT detail-oriented. We would never use him again.

In response to Ed's provider response, this is his wife and what you wrote is not true. The job being 'satisfactory' certainly does not mean it was a job well-done. For example, the shower still leaks. The two coats of paint were only done around the tile, when I pointed out to you the discoloration from the grout all along the top. There is a distinct line between where you applied one coat and where you patched up. The shower tiles were installed unevenly. I would be happy to provide photos to any interested potential customers. And no, Ed, we are not going to call you back to repair anything in this house.

Response from Ed's Home Improvements & Repairs
"Memberl, Let's address the actual facts to your issues with my work. I find it strange that I heard no complaints about any of these issues with exception of the leak which I promptly returned and corrected with no further complaints assuming that all else was done to your satisfaction. Why after 13 months is there suddenly a need to complain about a job that all along, up to the end, was completely satisfactory by your "wife". I never heard any dissatisfaction to any of the work by her and the few small items you pointed out I immediately work on to your agreed satisfaction. Here's my reponse to your accusations: 1. I did not "hassle" you about the start date. In our first meeting you questioned my availability. I told you I could start around the 1st of December. You agreed that could work. I began planning my schedule around that possibility to find out 2 weeks later that you'd prefer I start after the new year. I simply asked if there was any way you would consider the Dec. 1 start date. You said no, after the new year was better. At that point I dropped it. I didn't hassle you. I simply tried to work out the date to help my scheduling. 2.I did not clean up sufficiently each day. I don't recall leaving any mess anywhere outside the bathroom walls that was being renovated. As a matter of fact, even the bathroom I somewhat organized my tools and supplies as much as possible and necessary for my own sanity when I returned to resume work each day. 3. Neither I nor my helpers damaged your sink during construction. I take great caution with the fixtures and materials for all my jobs and stress this to my workers. I will recall that the sink top was brought up to the bathroom by you and your "wife" to see how it would look then returned to the downstairs. When we removed it from the box, the scratch was already there. 4. Did a shoddy job painting. I primed and painted the walls with 2 coats of paint and made sure they were satisfactory by your wifes admission prior to continuing to other work. 5. Did not tile behind the vanity. Nobody tiles behind a fixed vanity base cabinet. The base cabinet is installed prior to the tile being installed in every bathroom I've ever been including my home which was done by a professional builder. 6. Did not plan the wall tile height properly. The wall tile height was what you & your "wife" specified. The height has no bearing on the medicine cabinet & vice versa. You requested the tile go approximately 2/3 of the way up the wall and when I showed your wife example heights, she agreed on where she wanted it to end. That's where we tiled to. 7. Broke two special order porcelain outlet covers and switchplates. These I told your wife to reorder and I re-imbursed you for them. Common practice. Nobodies perfect. Accidents do happen and I made good on them. 8. Within several weeks the shower started to leak. As I told you when I repaired this problem. It was the floor outside the shower where water was getting under the curb sill and making its way around. I subsequently caulked and assume there hasn't been a problem since. If there has been, you never called about it. 9. The paint began to peel on the bathroom door. The door is extremely old with many layers of old paint. I suggested replacing it with a new door, however, you wanted to retainn the existing door. I took it home and primed and painted it as I have painted hundreds of doors before, never having a problem with paint peeling. This is also the first I'm hearing about this problem. I took full responsibility for all the issues you brought to my attention and addressed them in a timely manner. My work ethic is sound and I have had more call backs to do additional work for customers and referrals by these customers to keep me busier than most of my peers. If anybody needs to work on their issues, it's not me."
