Install & finish floors. 11/2 100's of voids, uneven sanding, split ends. 11/4 Installer re-sanded sawdust, spot refinished, filled voids. Gave us tube, said use to fill remaining holes! 11/6 Installer filled more voids, some re-coated. 11/13 Owner agreed, not what he expected: too much color variation, knots, voids, multiple split ends, end heights not meeting, sawdust under poly. Said he wanted us to be happy, he would talk to vendor. Paid bal. 11/26 Vendor wood is S&B , but: price was the criteria for which we selected this less expensive product from . . . If the color variation was the most important concerns we would have presented either a Clear grade of product or a Select & Better grade from a premium (Northern) mill. Never discussed/agreed to color variation/lower price. Vendor: Industry standards note that unfinished flooring should be trowel filled prior to finishing. This would address the voids identified in the pictures. John refused help on wood, his guy would refinish & we should not have paid if we were not satisfied. We not comfortable with poor worker redo. Suggested refund $1000 John now says "I am not a hardwood guy , "What do I know about hardwood?"
Description of Work: We hired All About Flooring of Wolfeboro, NH to install/ finish about 800 sq ft of hardwood flooring on second floor of our home. The installer came/measured and the owner gave us a price. We chose the "type" of wood that we wanted from photographs on a website. The specified wood ( Select and Better ) was supposed to be delivered the week of September 30 so it would sit in the house at least seven days before the installer started. On October 7, the wood arrived, the last day that was advisable based on the date the installer would start. We paid for the wood and gave an "extra" good will deposit since John said the installer would have to take some expenses (car gas, polyurethane, etc.) before our return on November 3. The installer was supposed to start on Monday, October 13 and be completed by Saturday, October 18. The installer knew and understood that we needed to have the job completed at least seven days prior to our furniture moving in, which would be Monday, November 3. So we had a one week margin in the scheduling. On October 8, we returned to Ohio and a neighbor was overseeing. Our neighbor called on October 25 to tell us that not even the wood installation, much less the sanding and polyurethane finishing, was complete. In fact, one of the bedrooms had not even been started yet. October 27 was seven days before the movers arrived, so we were clearly not going to get the three coats of polyurethane on the floors by then. We talked to the installer, and he assured us that seven days of curing was not necessary prior to our moving furniture onto the floors, and that he would be finished by Thursday, October 30. When we arrived at the house on Sunday, November 2, we found floors with too many voids between boards to count, uneven sanding, and uneven polyurethane finishing. Needless to say, we could not have our furniture moved onto the second floor the next day. The installer, Tony, said he would come back to fix the voids. On Tuesday, November 4, while he was working he handed my wife a tube of wood filler and told her she could use this to fill any remaining holes! (And, this was after the 3 coats of poly had been applied, when the wood filling should have been done prior to sanding and polyurethane finishing!!) Besides filling a few of the voids, the installer attempted to sand down areas with saw dust under the polyurethane and spot finish the poly. His patch job was bad. He came back two days later, on Thursday, November 6, and agreed the job was not an improvement and he would re-coat most of the area, but he did not want to "give us a free coat" He filled more voids but again did not complete the job to a professional level. Meanwhile, we compared appearance of the wood itself with sample photographs seen on the web and we did not believe that the installed wood was up to the quality levels of Select and Better" oak flooring.
