I hired Durgin Electric based on reviews on Angieslist. But Jason ended up be the worst contractor I ever hired during the entire rehab project.
It was a nightmare from the get-go.
The owner Jason Durgin (MA license # 20375, NH license # 11828) shows up three times and three times only: the estimate, first day of work when he has to go pull the permit and last day to pick up the final payment. If you count hours, it's less than a full day's work in total.
First week, Joe (journeyman) and Sean (apprentice) show up for two days then disappeared for three days. I was never notified ahead of time. I had to call Jason to find out that they had to stop my work for another job.
There is no show on rough inspection day. Jason and his team find it unnecessary to show up so I have to take time off, wait for the inspector and go through the inspection with the inspector myself.
Since I was moving the service entrance from the front of the house to the back, there was a decent amount of coordination with the inspector and NStar. Jason never called to follow up with either the inspector or NStar to schedule to move the service drop. I had to call Jason to find out that he did not make any follow-up phone calls. As you can tell already, I feel like I was managing the project for him the entire time.
They drill holes to run wires wherever they feel like it and they drill through my radiant heat tubing in 3 places. They are not easy to fix since the radiant tubing is underneath the subfloor. In the end, Jason only voided a small invoice of $136. Not only they drill holes wherever they want, but they also leave trash everywhere. I asked Joe to at least put them in a trash bag. He did it initially but instead of bringing his own trash bags, he asked me for them. Eventually he just totally ignored picking up the trash. In the end, my basement was filled with stripped wires, sheathing and empty boxes everywhere around the house.
My architect provided professional electrical drawings with exact location of each lighting fixture. They still managed to put in a sconce where there should be no sconces. Also, they install them at random heights and at random distance from one and other. For instance, one sconce is 5and quot; from the ceiling and the other about a foot from the ceiling. For exterior sconces, one hole was drilled literally inches away from my downspout and the other about 2 feet from it. After the sconce was installed in the proper location, the original hole on the siding was left unpatched.
No attempts were made to center the entrance light right above the entrance door, they just install them wherever. The track light in the kitchen was way off center and one end was two inches higher than the other. For one ceiling light fixture, instead of installing 3 light bulbs, only 1 was installed. Instead of installing cable plates for the network cables, they just drilled a hole to a blank plate for them. Their shoddy workmanship goes on and on and I just wish Angie's List would let me upload more than 10 pictures.
I paid $1,400 extra to have dedicated circuit for each room. When I found out that lights on the 1st floor are tied to a 2nd floor circuit, and lights in the basement are tied to a 1st floor circuit, Jason changed his story saying our initial agreement was to have only the receptacles in dedicated circuit for each room, which is absolutely untrue and even the contract says it otherwise: and quot;Additional cost to give each room its own dedicated circuit - $1,400and quot;. Since the drywall was already up at this point and the moving date was scheduled, instead of having them correct their mistake, I had to live with it.
To save them time and hassle, I unlock my own 30' ladder from the yard and let them use it to install exterior sconces. I thought they would at least return it to where they took it from. When I return the next morning, I found it, unsecured, leaning against the exterior wall where the last sconce was installed. Since my neighbor and I share the same driveway, thank god it didn't fall and damage my neighbor's cars.
On the supposedly last day, I was expecting a final walk-through with Joe but Joe worked only half of the day and left the house unannounced. I found it strange so I called Joe and asked him why the job wasn't completed, he said Jason would come back to wrap it up. It didn't make sense to me especially when Joe told me that that was the last day and for Jason, he's never showed up since day one. When I spoke with Jason, he basically said he wanted his final payment when he came to finish the job. At the end, there was no apologies and no final walk-through.
After the final payment about a month ago, I thought the nightmare was over. Despite their sloppy work, lies and zero attention to details, lack of communication and professionalism, I had given Jason all the benefit of the doubt and I wasn't going to write any bad reviews. After all, they did get the major items completed. But something just pushed me over the edge to tell the whole story:
When the fire alarm inspector came in for inspection this morning, I was shocked to find out it didn't pass because the circuit for the CO/smoke detector was not labeled properly. Also, when Verizon comes in to install FIOS, the Verizon tech found out that none of the CAT5 connections on the walls were properly wired. I called Jason but he refused to come back and fix the problems.
