Jewelry Sales/Design/Repair
On Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 11 am, I went into Bea's Jewelers, Inc. in order to have three pieces of gold jewelry appraised.
I was told by the woman at the counter that appraisals cost $55 and were by appointment only - I asked if it were possible to assess the value of the gold itself as the tags were too small for me to read, and she referred me to Bea.
During the testing process, one of the necklaces snapped under the pressure of the clip - Bea didn't seem concerned about this at all. She quoted me the amounts, which came to about $40 total, which were much lower than I had expected (considering the least expensive piece was purchased at over $200 more than ten years ago).
I took the pieces back and said, "you broke one of the necklaces," and she said, "well, it's thin, it's only worth $8". I was pretty much speechless - I packed the pieces, including the broken one, back into their jewelry boxes and left.
I did not expect to be treated in such a way - if the process of evaluating the necklaces was so rough that it involved damaging it, it would have been more appropriate to tell me that beforehand. Also, Bea's reaction of 'oh well' was completely unprofessional - these pieces were my mothers (as I had told her), and I was looking for some gauge of their worth, not to make a quick buck. She did not offer to repair the jewelry, or even apologize to me.
