Construction began in May-08. Work was slow, even though he sometimes had two laborers, he was not here regularly. It did rain a lot, so those days he was not here, but then we found there were many sunny days he did not show up. Pretty soon we were weeks behind schedule. At one point he moved and rerouted two main bathroom drain pipes that ran through the kitchen wall. I found out later that he is not allowed to do plumbing without a license. Fast forward to August. Kitchen and pantry still not finished. Not many full days put in, but plenty of excuses. I had been without appliances for 2 months. Late August he brought in electricians but he was not here when they came and they said he was not prepared (no holes cut for boxes, no blocks up for outside lights, siding not done, etc.) so they left and said they would come back in 2 days. Contractor finally shows up and says he'll do the wiring himself. He spends the day wiring to the panel. Nothing works. Electricians return to find illegal wiring done by contractor. They argue by phone (again contractor not here) and leave to report him to town inspector. Contractor brings in new electrician and blames crappy wiring on 1st electrician. Meanwhile, new dishwasher installed has been leaking since install - new hardwood floor is now buckled. Contractor lets me think plumber is responsible, but dishwasher not wired upon install and contractor agrees to run and test it once wired. Contractor will not return calls from my insurance company. Job nearly complete September 11, 08 but we just want him out of the house now. We get a notice from 1st electrician - he's not been paid by contractor, filing a lien on my house. I pay contractor but hold back $682 that he owes electrician. Tried to get them to work it out but now contractor blaming his shoddy wiring on 1st electrician and won't pay him (sent him a bill instead). Sent letter to contractor offering to pay 1st electrician the money we held back. Contractor now notifies me he is putting a lien on my house as well. Overall, later workmanship at end of project was shoddy. For example, he did not caulk around exterior door sill allowing rain to seep in under hardwood floor at back door, buckling this area. Would not recommend. Now finding out this guy has a history of plumbing without a license. Additionally charged us $2000 more than estimate, which we paid. Lastly, he said he called the town inspector for a final inspection but he didn't show up. I called town inspector and he was never notified. State inspector and Fire Marshall now involved.
