About us

For more than 20 years, we at Iron Horse Standing Seam Roofing Co. (MadCow Roofing Inc. division) have strived to deliver the best possible standing seam roof system on the market. MadCow Roofing still remains one of the few roofing companies in the entire area that carries full workman comp. and liability insurance and we offer easy payment options (credit cards not accepted). Over the years, we have developed new methods of installation to ensure that the final product is of the highest possible quality. Our metal supply company, Englert Inc, provides us with true American made metal of the highest quality and we have been using it for more than 16 years. The standard installed system that we provide consists of 24 Gauge galvalume with a Kynar 500 finish which is Energy Star Rated and is warrantied for 35 years. Every pan is roll formed on site and we mechanically lock our 1 1/2" seams which is the only way to achive a UL rating for uplift, and we also offer snow gaurd and snow fencing options to help protect any areas of concern against sliding snow fall. A 5/8" backer rod is installed under each pan to add rigidity and strength, and provides added ventilation to a 16" vented ridgecap (8" down either side of the peak) which is installed last to ensure full coverage versus the standard 8" ridgecap (4" down either side of the peak) that's installed first and the pans are slid under which only leaves about 1 1/2" of coverage. Combine all of this and you are left with the finest standing seam system available today. Please look us up at the New Hampshire Better Business Bureau with whom we maintian an A+ raiting after more than 20 years.

We got a quote and commissioned Iron Horse to replace the roof on our house and a 24x24 garage. This included removal and disposal of the old shingles and repair/replacement of some of the sheathing. They originally scheduled for mid-December and only missed by a week or two due to bad weather, which was anticipated. They also replaced four skylights with new Velux models. They started on a Monday and were done by Saturday despite brutally cold weather and strong winds. We were REALLY glad to have this new roof in place after 108" of snow this season. One other quote was cheaper but did not include disposal- we would have to do it ourselves. We went with Iron Horse due to their excellent local reputation and we are glad we did.

The company was professional during the installation phase: arrived on schedule, completed work without interruption, cleaned up the job site thourghly, and the finished roof has performed to our satisfaction. The work was completed for the estimated cost.
The contractor made the claim that the metal roof product performed to and quot;cool roofand quot; requirements. The implication of this was that in addition to improved performance in winter the house would be cooler in summer. In the year since installation the roof has performed as claimed.

Overall, the job was very good. They showed up when they said, took about a week to do the job, and my husband (who is a general contractor) commented that they did an excellent job. The winters of 2008 and 2009 were average NH winters and the roof held out very well through all the snow and ice for the winter. However, in 2010, NH experienced an exceptionally cold/snowy winter where the ice dams and snow never melted on my roof from December to April. Ice got under the metal roof in the valley on one side of the large dormer and misshaped two of the metal strips. MadCow promptly came out the following spring to fix it. They re-applied the two strips in a way that they said should prevent that from re-occurring. If you have dormer areas that are more northerly-facing that will be roofed with metal, I would ask them to pay special attention to those areas based on what seems to happen when there is an inordinately cold winter with ice buildups.

We wanted a new metal roof on our 150-year old farmhouse because our last metal roof had lasted more than 50 years. After weeks of Internet research, we decided that mechanically-sealed “standing seam” (rather than screwed down or “snap-lock”) metal panels were the best (though not the cheapest) choice for our roof, which included both steep (12 in 12 slope) and very low-slope sections. We got several estimates (which varied widely), and we looked at a lot of finished jobs by different installers. We chose Iron Horse/Mad Cow because they seemed to have the most experience doing this type of metal roof (and only this type) on residences, and had the equipment and regular employees (not subs) to do the job. The Mad Cow people were very patient and helpful as we made decisions about material, color, chimney flashing (standard lead flashing is incompatible with the roof metal), and what to do about gutters and about snow guards (we decided to try one winter without either one). Once we made our deposit and got on their schedule, the only delays were due to weather (2009 was a very rainy building season). And they did the whole job in 3 days. The work crew was pleasant, responsive to questions, and amazingly agile on the roof. They stripped the old roof and installed the new with skill and meticulous attention to detail, especially around chimneys and abutting walls. They maneuvered their panel-rolling equipment and disposal trailer around our property with very minimal damage. Finally, they cleaned up wonderfully, even sweeping the yard with magnets, to find nails and metal snippets. Result is gorgeous, and so far no leaks.
