I received the written estimate that night. Ron showed up on time on Tuesday (9/22) and all seemed well. Adrian arrived with the contract for the windows, I signed, and gave a deposit. Their helper started ripping out our current windows while Adrian and Ron left to pick up the windows from the retailer. I was impressed, they seemed like stand up guys and I was ready to do further business with them.
And then everything went to h***.
Ron called from the retailer and said the windows did not have attached exterior trim as I had ordered. Turns out it was the retailer's mistake. Ron said I'd have to pay for the trim materials and I said that was fine. If that had been the only problem with the windows, I would have made the retailer give me the materials in compensation for the screw up and that would have been the end of the story.
Wed. Ron tells me the retailer measured wrong and the windows are too big - they are going to have to rip out some of the framing to make room. He quotes me $500 for the materials for the exterior trim - I say okay. He also tells me the windows don't have extension jams (which they were supposed to). By this point, he's already installed half the windows, though, so I don't think anything of it. I assumed everything was fine/he was making it work.
Thursday night I get an emailed estimate for $2,600 to install the exterior window trim from Adrian. I email back and ask what that is for. since the contract I already signed for the window install includes installing the exterior trim. He says it's because the exterior became more complicated because they had to enlarge the window openings to accommodate the windows and Ron will explain it to me on Friday.
Friday - meet with Ron. He tells me the $2,600 is because they have to redo the cedar shakes around each window because they had to change the opening size by ripping out the framing to accommodate the new windows. I ask if that includes the extension jams. He says no. So now my $3,600 window install has become somewhere between $6,200 and at least $8,000. So now I'm steaming. I ask why he went ahead and installed the windows when he knew these didn't fit/weren't the ones I ordered? He said he knew I was in a hurry to get them installed so he went ahead and put them in. I told him it wasn't his decision to make (I would have gladly sent them back and got the right ones) and now he had doubled down on the retailer's mistake and I was getting stuck with the bill. The real problem, however, is that he STARTED RIPPING OUT THE OLD WINDOWS BEFORE HE HAD CONFIRMED THAT WE HAD RECEIVED THE CORRECT NEW WINDOWS. And that's the crux of the problem - he royally screwed up and at that point would have had to put plywood over all our windows while we waited 4-6 weeks for new windows which he knew wouldn't fly so he went ahead and tried to install these windows anyway and then hold us over a barrel for the cost to fix the mistake.
In the middle of all this Ron and Adrian were supposed to be getting me an estimate for the roof and work on the interior. They knew I was on a tight deadline to start interior repairs and yet, it's been a week and I still don't have the interior estimate. There were many promises of when estimates were arriving and some high pressure sales tactics to get me to start the roof. I agreed to the roof THREE TIMES but they never showed up prepared to actually do the work despite several supposed start dates. When they blew the last deadline of Sunday for providing us with an estimate for the interior (which is now going to result in our insurance claim being closed and us being royally screwed, all because I wasted a week on these guys' empty promises ), my patience ran out.
I called Ron on Monday morning and told him I wasn't doing the roof or interior with them unless they could prove they could complete one project correctly; they needed to make the window situation right. I offered to pay them the $2,600 they were asking but that had to include extension jams. He said he couldn't do it for that. I told him he needed to make this right. He said he'd talk to Adrian. I haven't heard from him since. We put a stop payment on the second/final payment, but I don't expect to hear from these guys again. What a royal screw up. Well, they blew the opportunity for a $60K+ contract because of this. Ron actually had the nerve to say that he'd sent the estimate on Sunday (I never got it), that he'd been having email problems, and that if I didn't get it I should have called him. I told him it wasn't my job to chase him, it was his job to make sure I got what he sent/had promised, especially if he knew he was having problems with his email.
These guys have no follow through and make a lot of promises but never deliver. I spent $8,000 on windows (not including what I paid to Silver Bros. for installation) that I can't use and am now stuck with. Because he installed them on my house, I can't return them. The retailer's offer to fix their end of the mistake is that I can return the windows or they can give me a discount on the installation, neither of which helps. I'm looking at the windows and half of them look crooked - which is no surprise; there's no room to shim them to make them straight in some cases, that's how tight they are in the openings.

Pre-painting estimate and multiple discussions. We modified the project several times and he was very helpful. Then we had a few hiccoughs when the colour white we gave him matched one trim and not another; he spent a lot of time really sorting out our mix-up (we thought it was all the same!). Our fabulous painters then did a lot of tape-joint repair, fixed drywall screws that were falling out, and cleaned up a lot of damaged trim. Everything was professionally done, masking kept everything clean and unaffected, and they were very pleasant to have in our home. Will absolutely use them again (and we have more projects I am about to ask them about). And the job... it looks beautiful! Our home went from tape-joint-peeling, faded paint, eyesore... to looking new again!
I did not have them do any exteriour work... but that will also be in our future plans.
Plus... there is nothing like supporting a local family business with such great people!
I needed the work done very quickly for bank financing and Silver Bros. quoted and did the work in a few days. The communication was professional, the work was professional and the pricing was good.
I'll be using them again for more projects I have coming up. Give them a try, I think you'll be pleased.
They arrived promptly each and every day. Also, each day, they communicated which room was to be completed the next day so that we could clean out the the small items. They moved all the big furniture. Holes left in the wall from hangings, window treatments and "glued" mirrors were patched, sanded and rendered smooth. They paid close attention to details. No bleed to the baseboards, no bleeds at the corners, beautifully done.
The estimate was true in both price, time and work they did. Definitely use them again.
They showed up when they were supposed to (and you know how hard it is to get a contractor to show up on time!) They protected all the office furniture and equipment with plastic as well as the floor, so I had no paint drops when they were done. Also there are no paint drips around the window trim or doors - another sign of a professional job.
There was one employee who painted my office and waiting room and he worked hard - no slacking off. He arrived on time every morning and worked an 8 hour day.
I truly believe you get what you pay for. I could have gone with a less expensive painter but I would have sacrificed on quality. I will definitely use them again and highly recommend them.
"Let us clarify the actual situation. We were contacted originally for a painting estimate but our bid was rejected for a lesser price and quality. We were contracted in turn to do a remodeling project for this client and spent 3 months working on the site. Prior to our arrival this client had hired, then fired two companies before us. In addition, two electricians, two window companies, two plumbers and two different painters came and went during our stint, some making it only a week before being replaced. Her conceptual designer’s plans were off by 6 inches and using our professional opinion we recommended bringing in a structural engineer to address the issues from her designer. Our recommendation was followed and this client was pleased. Allegations of taking trips to the lumber yard while “On the clock” are completely false. Our lead carpenter, who has 40yrs of experience, obtained his supplies during his lunch or on his way home. The seemingly frequent trips to the lumberyard were due to the daily changes this client made. We consistently strived to please her by discussing at length her plans, obtaining the supplies, completing the task only to have her change her mind and have us tear it down and do something completely different. Her claims that we covered rot without repairing are also completely false. The rotted areas were cut back to firm, solid wood; the remaining joists were “sistered” to complete the appropriate framing. Claims that we left siding “unprotected and exposed” are also a misconception. It was exterior grade plywood under a soffit that was going to be eventually covered. Much of the causes of delay were due to indecisiveness and her change in plans. Interestingly enough, a new employee who began working for us on this project convinced her that she could save some money by utilizing only his services and we were removed from the project after working diligently and patiently with her for over 3 months. We sincerely regret the dissatisfaction of this client. We consistently maintained a professional, patient, and consistent environment. We kept in contact with her on a daily basis through emails texts, nightly phone calls, personal meetings and weekend updates. All work was approved and prices agreed upon prior to commencement. We have maintained a successful, family business in the Seacoast for 40 years and strive for 100% satisfaction."
