LIBERTY TAX SERVICE

I'd been to Block some years ago and didn't like them (too impersonal). Another time I had to go to a CPA, who did a good job but charged over $600. Ouch! I saw a coupon for Liberty and decided to try them. They took care of me in less than 45 minutes and even had some toys for my kids to play with. I'm not sure how their computer system works but they were able to run different scenarios and find the best for me. They found a deduction that Block had missed and next year I'll be better prepared. The guy even told me what might happen if I re-marry (in terms of taxes)... not something I would have thought to ask! So they were very thorough, without 'prying' if you know what I mean. What I liked was they make you feel at home... fresh coffee, conversation. My preparer was happy to sit and talk about family and whatever, not rush me out the door. The bank products (i.e. speedier refund) are expensive in terms of interest, but it's entirely optional. I wouldn't get an "advance" unless you really need the money ASAP. My prep fee came out to $210, a LOT less than the accountant! It may be high for some people (so I gave it a "B") but certainly better than being audited for a mistake. For $30, you can have the fees taken out of your refund (it's the bank's charge, not Liberty's) so I paid them up front. The preparer made sure I knew what was the cheapest option. While I was there I heard that the IRS was holding up some refunds because of filing errors involving a new tax credit or something. I'm sure this wasn't their fault, but a few customers were upset that their checks weren't ready. I also heard something about a new debit card not working right. Again probably not their fault, but that's what the other "B" is for. Miscellaneous: Return customer go even faster, they keep your information handy. You can get copies anytime at no charge. I just wish they could print up my stimulus check when Congress decides how much we get!
