$4,000
My wife recently hired Sanford to replace our water heater. The final cost was almost $4000. When I called and asked for an itemized bill, I was refused by more that one of their employees. I then asked if I could at least have the water heater that was installed info so I could get an idea of the cost. The person I talked to gave me the wrong brand. When it was installed,I looked the info up and the model that was installed was approximately $800- 1200 dollars… I don’t expect anyone to work for free, but even if it was $2000, does that mean we were charged $2000 for labor???? WHY DO THEY REFUSE TO GIVE AN ITEMIZED BILL???? Seems very shady

They were at my home for 45 minutes to snake the drains to 2 sinks. No parts, just labor and charged me $680. The sinks drain just fine now, but I’m sure you can get the same service for much less money. I’ll never use them again.

Used them for years, no complaints until yesterday. Annual service performed on furnace—tech informed my wife we had a “small drip” coming from the pressure relief valve, but it’s barely “weeping” (his exact wording); told her it would be approximately $500 to replace it—she declined as he told her it may not really be leaking but could actually be residual water from the service he performed! Got home about 8 hours later and when I went to the basement we had substantial water on the floor around the furnace. The tech had placed a small trash can (2 foot tall) underneath the pressure relief valve and it was overflowing onto the floor. Called and we were told by the service manager they would not send a tech out as he “advised” of the problem when he was there. I told her I cleaned the furnace and area around it (shop vac, wiped down the unit) ONE HOUR prior to the tech’s arrival and the floor was dry as a bone. She repeatedly told me it wasn’t true. I have NEVER spoken to a customer service rep the way I unloaded on her, but to repeatedly be told that it was already leaking, the amount of water was not the tech’s fault, they would not come out to rectify the problem, and I would have to pay for the repairs the next day simply made me come unglued. I had carbon copy paperwork from the tech where he checked “good” on every item he inspected/serviced and included a handwritten comment that things were fine with no deficiencies noted. After all this, I bought the part for less than $50 and replaced it in less than 5 minutes. Once again, the basement floor is bone dry. Without a doubt, the tech did something to cause the issue and their response (or lack thereof) to the situation is nothing short of shameful. The dishonesty and inflated price for repair work is why I would freeze to death before allowing an organization with no character, integrity or business ethics to service my heating unit again!

Very personable and friendly crews. They wear shoe covers while inside so as to not track dirt from outside.

They do it once a year. They know what they're doing. They're not going to recommend something be fixed if it's not broken. They do a good job and they do it for a reasonable price.

It was for central air. I can count on them. When I have a problem with any of these items, I can make one phone call and somebody is going to come and they're going to fix it. I didn't get a lot of prices to rate them by. What was more important was to have somebody I could trust to do a good job and stand behind it. So I'm really not sure where the prices are compared to other prices.

They do a great job. They're just terrific; great people. They're prompt. When you have a problem they're there and they take care of it. They stay on the job until it's done.

"Dear [removed member name] I am sorry you feel this way. Although this service visit was 2 years ago I was able to look up the job information. You did indeed have a maintenance agreement with us, and you did get the maintenance that you were due. I can certainly empathize with you for not being happy with the situation of your refrigerant leaks. However here are the facts as you wrote them. The system was 5 years old and not installed by us. You had multiple leaks in your condensing unit coil. The manufactures warranty was 5 years on the coil and it was out of warranty. We quoted you replacing the coil with all labor, refrigerant recovery, and recharging the system for $1800. Since your equipment was out of warranty we also gave you the option of replacing the condenser, and indoor coil with new equipment comparable to what you have for $3800. We never do any work without approval by the customer. Your maintenance agreement was canceled by you in April of 2014, when it was to be renewed for the following year."

Service Contract:

Said they would show up early in the morning between 8 and 10 a.m. and then not show up until 4 or 5 p.m. causing me to lose a full day of work. This happened at least four times until I got smart and dropped them. This was problematic since I was a fairly new employee and worried this would affect my continued employment. Plus they never fixed the problem.

Installation:

The outside unit that was installed was oversized which caused it to continually freeze up and did not adequately cool the residence. Plus the coolant line was not secured properly leading it to leak coolant.

The new unit was run through the old unit causing the system excess stress and perform double duty. The air handler was cracked in three places. The furnace was installed atop a metal box with no sound suppression. When the furnace clicked on it sounded like a 747 taking off from Logan Airport. Plus the furnace was vented incorrectly. The result was a need to remove the old unit at a cost of approximately $1,700.00. Then I had to replace both furnace and air conditioner at a cost of approximately $16,000. This for a system less than 10 years old. This was money I was going to use to refinance my mortgage. To date, Sanford has cost me close to $20,000 if I include excessive heating and cooling costs due to their faulty installation and shoddy workmanship. This does not include money I would save on interest if I had been able to refinance my mortgage.

I am one of three people in my set of condo units who have had problems related to Sanford's installations and have incurred additional costs as a result. All three of us have dropped Sanford as a service provider. If you do not want to endure the financial problems we have encountered, chose another service provider for your heating and air conditioning needs.

Professional and quick. Detected and fixed issues that were covered by manufacturers warranty. I have had a ductless Sanyo and a Carrier system (both heat pump/AC) installed by Sandford, and I have been please with the systems performance and the quick turn around on my calls and questions.

Dale Sanford and his team are a model of what a service provider should be and do. We researched our options on a new heating system extensively, ultimately getting 4 options. While Sanford was not the lowest price, their thoroughness, professionalism, educating of us, and quality of responsiveness to our questions led us to trust them fully (not the case with the lowest priced option). They did everything they said they would, better and faster than they said they would, with a level of care that we kept remarking about as they removed our old furnace and hot water heater, and replaced them with the new equipment. What a positive difference in the quality and cost of our heat - just like they said it would be. Most importantly to us, when we had a problem, they responded with speed, caring and handled it as well as we could have asked. What happened was that at a certain point, our humidifier stopped working during the winter heating season, and the house got very dry. When we called them late in the afternoon one day, they were out here first thing in the morning. Whatever the problem, their service person in consultation with Dale, said they were just going to replace the unit, ordered the part, and installed it the next day. On top of the excellent service and communication, they upgraded our unit - all at no cost to us. Again, they are a model for us of how we would all of our service providers to act and operate. A world-class operation from top to bottom, which we enthusiastically recommend to everyone!

He came on time, was curteous and competent. He took the time to put on booties so that he would not track on our floor. He fully explained why a new pump was needed before replacing it.

This was a very expensive lesson but, this particular company did cost us the least by comparison to other estimates we received. We have cancelled our service contract with another company and enlisted Sanford to maintain our system.
A very complicated experience that we will not detail here. Bottom line: Sanford employees were professional, prompt, courteous and, in the end, they did exactly the right thing when we questioned the billing. They lived up to the claims on their website. Recommend using them for Carrier systems.

We had a Fujitsu mini-split ductless heating and air conditioning system installed in August. The installation went smoothly, but after a week or so we could not get the system to respond. Sanford came out and it took several hours to locate the problem, a leak, which was fixed and a remote that needed to be reprogrammed, which took over an hour to identify and then find someone other than the technician to help reprogram the remote. It took awhile, but it got fixed, though I did not feel the tech new as much as he should have. After not using the system for 2 months, now November. We turned on the system to find that we could get no heat. It was Sunday night, we called Sanford and they sent someone out right away. Again, the system leaked over the 2 months we were away when it was not running. Luckily we had a propane stove, that the tech looked at and helped us get it started since we never used it. That saved us for the night since it was cold in the 20's. The next day Sanford sent out a new service tech named Alex. He was here for about 5 hours. Testing for leaks, draining, pressurizing and refilling the system coolant. After that, finally heat. Then back to one of the remotes, which lost the program because the batteries where taken and and put back in. (Makes me wonder what will happen when I go to change dead batteries in the future.) Alex had to make several calls to get help reprogramming the remote. Eventually calling the manufacturer for tech support. It was an easy 3 step, push a few buttons to get it going, but took about an hour to get someone who knew what to do. Why this step is not in the manuals is odd. I hand wrote them into the manual for future reference. Alex was great, persistent and personable. I finally have heat. It has run for about 18 hours now and seems to be doing fine. Fingers crossed! This was an expensive system, and I was beginning to feel like I had made a mistake. My hope, from this point on, is it will work as good as the reviews and research I did indicated. Sanford and their techs are responsive, but I do feel they should have more knowledge about the system they installed. I think they need a dedicated, factory trained expert tech for this type of system.

We were their regular customer over the past two years. We had a very positive experience with them. They came out and gave a quote and delivered one hundred percent on that quote. The system that they installed met all of our needs and most recently during hurricane Sandy, we used our generator for three days and I cannot tell you how much it was worth every penny and we had confidence that it was going to work and it did. We were very pleased with our generator from Sanford.
