We started planning this flooring project in the beginning of July. He was paid a deposit of $800 (30% of the job) on July 10.
Jesse was aware that we had a VERY tight schedule and agreed to be there on August 13 to rip out the existing tile floor, and then to return on August 19 and 20 to tile.
He came on the 13th and tore out the floor. That went fine. He confirmed the return dates for the tile installation and requested another payment of $800. We gave him a check.
As of the 18th, Jesse told me he was on track, and that everything would be done by Friday the 21st.
On the 18th we were told he would be here bright and early on the 19th to finish the board and start the tile.
On the 19th, I expected him at 7. I sent him a text to see when he would be here and had not heard back at 8:30, so I sent another text. At 9:30 I sent another. At 10:00 am he got back to me and said he would be here between 12 and 2.
He arrived at noon, five hours late, with a new helper and left the guy here for almost five hours to install backer board. That was never finished.
He couldn?t make it the next day and swore he?d do it the next day and have it done by Saturday the 22nd.
On the 21st I got a text saying that he pulled a muscle and couldn?t make it. And none of his guys could either. Promised he would be there on the 22nd.
On the 22nd, the guy who was supposed to come finish the board had a problem at home and couldn?t make it. Sunday he guaranteed that he could do it all on Monday and Tuesday. Monday and Tuesday came and went with more excuses. We were again scheduled for Wednesday morning install and Thursday grout.
Wednesday came, and we were expecting him at 8. At 8:30 I texted him and he said he would not be there because he had to pull an all nighter at another job. He swore he would be there at 7:30 on Thursday the 27th to do EVERYTHING, start to finish.
On Thursday I got a text that he couldn?t make it to tile because his guys were out. But that he would be here at 9:30 to put down the rest of the board. At 10:40 he still wasn?t here. At that point I told him we were hiring someone else.
He came back and begged for another chance and said he would get it all done on Friday and Saturday.
Friday morning?no Jesse. He told us at 9 that he would be here by 12:30 to install the backer board. At 12:40 I texted him and he was stuck in traffic in Malden, MA (over an hour away) but that he was on his way. At 2:50 he told us he wasn?t coming. His helper would be here in the morning to do the board and he would tile on Monday.
At this point, he is fired. My patience has come to an end. He is by far the most inconsiderate, manipulative contractor I have ever dealt with. His saving grace has always been that he is extremely friendly and he does excellent work. He?s talented, no doubt. The floor he installed for us last year is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. But all the talent and charm in the world don?t matter if your word isn?t good. And believe me, his word is WORTHLESS.
I appreciate small businesses and try to deal with them whenever possible. I would never write a review like this unless it was well deserved. I also have this entire saga saved in a text message thread in case anybody would like to see it.
Save yourself the hassle of endless hours of WAITING and hire someone else.
First of all, I know this was a small job for a seasoned flooring installer and Jesse agreed to do it even though he knew it would be several trips back and forth because of the process. I also had a deadline, as I was getting married early October, and was trying to get this last part of the bathroom remodel done before several out of town guests arrived. I also wanted to keep this project unknown to my fiancé - I just wanted to get it done without his knowing at the time. Jesse was completely professional and understood my dilemma. He originally thought it would just be 2-2.5 days, but when we went to apply the enhancer product to part of the stone laid, he had to wait 48 hours to let the floor set. My time was running out and the end of the 48 hours was a Saturday- and Jesse was willing to get here at 6 AM or whatever time I asked - on a Saturday- to get the job done! I decided to wait until Monday and he made sure he came back first thing that next Monday to apply the enhancer on the one stone, and the sealer on the other - and got it done with time to set before my house full of guests arrived! He is truly a pleasure to work with and always keeps the customer's interests in front of his own. He even called the company that makes the enhancer to find out if he could apply it before the 48 hours the instructions said to wait from the time the floor is laid, which is what I was pressing him to do, but he got their feedback not to violate that time frame and instructions - and do the job right!
In terms of price, I gave him a good, rather than excellent because it was more than what another contractor quoted me previous, but at the end of the day, his work is quality and he had to make more trips as described above than expected.
If you have a tile flooring project, I strongly recommend Jesse Andrews!
