Flooring
It was marginally OK the first time, and a disaster the second time.
He refinished a hardwood floor in a house I bought and rehabilitated as a rental. His work was just "OK", not too great and not too bad. He also abandoned his van in the driveway for about a month, in the middle of the winter. This meant we couldn't plow around his van, and we were stuck with his van in the driveway and a big pile of ice the rest of the winter around where it had been once he finally retrieved it.
Things were "just "OK", nothing too bad, but nothing great. And I didn't know of anyone else around here who does hardwood floor refinishing.
So around the first of July this year, I called him and left a message (no one ever answers the phone), asking him to come out and buff out some scratches that tenants had left in the floors. He called back in a few days and we made an appointment. He showed up as promised and said he'd do it the following Sunday. I gave him a key to the house, and we agreed that he'd do the work and leave the key and his bill on the counter.
He never showed up and never called. I called him and left a message. He called back later and he said there had been a death in the family, and that he'd do it the following Sunday. I said I understood, and that would be fine.
He never showed up the next weekend and never called. I called him weekly after that, always leaving him messages, asking him to call me. He never returned any calls. In mid-August, I called and left him a message that I no longer wanted him to do the work, and that I'd like him to mail the key back to me. He did not mail the key back and did not return any of my calls. I called him weekly, asking for my key back. I did catch him at home one evening in late August, and he promised to drop the key by the house the next day. He did not do that, and he continued to refuse to return the key and to refuse to return my calls. This went on until mid-September, when I finally just gave up on him as a complete flake.
