Bob has shown no indication that he will resolve these issues. I probably will have to rent a lift and address the problems myself (2-story house).
I guess Angie's will not let me enter a separate review for the roofing job done by Talbot roofing. Execution and follow up for this job (2013) were excellent and I was very satisfied and that is why I gave the siding job to Talbot. I would give Talbot high marks for their work on that job. Experiences a year later on the siding job were very different.
I am frustrated and will now have to hire someone else to fix the problem. If you are going to spend your hard earned money on a roofing contractor, my advice is to find someone who will backup their work.
From initial contact through job completion, the service was excellent.
I will use the Talbot construction team again.
I asked what their rate was but never received a response. On Monday morning, I sent out an email at 8 am stating that I had a quick 30 minute errand to run and that they could contact me via cell should they arrive in my absence. At 9:30, I got an email response that they would be here around noon. All of this was annoying, but, I was just happy to finally get someone to clear my roof since I had water coming into the house in two areas. I knew that I was not the only person with this problem, that the demand was high for this service.
At noon, a crew arrived and was ready to start working. I asked for some kind of cost estimate. They called Bob (business owner) and had him call me. The price would be $795 for the whole roof. I asked if I could just get problem areas done and he told me they were charging $395 per hour. After giving it some thought (10 minutes), I called him back to ask that they do the whole roof.
One and a half hours later, they were gone. The roof was not completely cleared. Ice dams remained and some parts were not even touched. I called Bob to ask if they had left for lunch! He thought they might, so he said he would check with them and get back to me. He sent me an email saying they were finished, they had worked 1.5 hours and the bill would be $600.
Also, I found pieces of my shingled roof in the snow below. I replied that I was disappointed in the way this whole process had played out and I sent him photos of the state of my roof. He replied that it was fine, that it would melt, and if they cleared more ice, I would have MORE roof damage. What else could I say? I certainly don't want more roof damage and I know that the ice dams won't just "melt"...if they did, I wouldn't have needed them to be cleared.
Poor scheduling, poor communication and poor quality of work.
He has come twice and been very responsive. There have been 5 guys up on my roof getting all the snow off.
"Talbot Roofing never went out to this home. They must be confused with another company. We do not ever ask for money up front on repairs."
got backed up. Still, I'd give them a solid A for 2013. We had one issue after the 2013 job with woodstove flue collars that weren't resealed after being removed and reinstalled. I mentioned it to Rick and he had someone out the next day to correct. Both Rick and the crew member apologized for the oversight.
Weather does play a significant role in when roofers can work, and sometimes jobs get backed up. Be clear in what you want and when you want it, and these guys will do their best to accommodate you. Overall, Talbot's did a good job at a good price. I would use them again. They stood behind their work and were right there when something had to be fixed.
I also was looking for a quote to add gutters to the house. Bob asked me if I ever had water in my basement, to which I responded no, then looking at the long overhang I have he recommended not putting gutters as they often are a cause of ice build up on the roof and a pain to maintain/clean. He gave me advice as to how to use gravel and PVC to direct ground water.
Although I did not contract Bob for anything, it is really refreshing when you find a contractor who is honest and glad to take the time to give the right advice without expecting anything in return. All that with absolutely no sign of frustration that he made the trip out at his expense and it did not result in a job.
The next time I need roofing work done, I know who I'm calling.
Thanks Bob
days of my calling him. Got me an estimate quickly. He was also very
flexible when I had to change dates a couple of times and change the
scope of work. He is willing to negotiate as well.
When The crew discovered a lot of rotted wood under 3
layers of shingles he was able to get the necessaty plywood there
ASAP to keep the job going.
The only issue I had was that they left a bit of a mess with the fallen shingles. I would recommend them based on the quality of the work and the responsiveness--the key things! But make sure they cover ALL the areas with a drop cloth and clean up totally so you are not left with debris, and make sure they use their own equipment, like rakes and brooms, not yours, as they are likely to break.
