Get the bill in writing before work is begun, its different after the work is done
Do not pay him until the work is completed because once he is paid he lies to you and tells you right to your face that his party is more important than honoring his contract. PS my ans machine recorded his outright lies.
The overall installation went very well. My only concern was that the through-the-wall connector required the partial removal of a wall stud (it was trimmed with a reciprocating saw). Only a third of the stud was removed so this is probably a non-issue. I only wish that it was installed exactly between the wall studs. The chimney looks pretty square and the rest of the installation looks great.
I would highly recommend Jeff and his team. He also had a shop in Epping, NH so before you purchase a wood-burning or pellet stove, it's worth probably checking out his store front.
"Thank You Member. We pride ourselves on going the extra mile, my techs take the time to understand what you are looking to do and give it just a little more, this is the way I hand train every tech that works for Victorian. -Jeff"
He arrived with his truck and work trailer, and helper, right on time. I showed him around the home, specifically the fireplace and chimney. After some inspection of my particular set up, he described to me what he would need to do in order to install everything safely, and to code. Every install is different, and Jeff was prepared.
He started with the liner, by working it into place after removing the damper. He brought the damper parts to me to save, in case the fireplace was ever to be used in this manner again. After the liner was in place, he got the cap property set up, and did some basic re-pointing to ensure everything was sealed up correctly. All the while, his helper was setting up parts and pieces, cleaning up behind him, and delivering Jeff needed parts. It was a smooth operation.
Once the chimney was all set, he moved inside to get the stove set up. It was fairly heavy, and I must say, it was impressive watching him maneuver it up over our stone stairs when he first arrived... he has a pretty sweet electronic dolly that walked up the stairs! His helper had gotten the unit ready while he was on a very tall ladder working on chimney, so at this point they just had to line it all up and attach everything. Once this was complete, his helper went to work cleaning while Jeff explained some ins and outs of having a new wood stove.
My particular install required a few unique touches and Jeff wasn't afraid to apply his knowledge to my unique circumstance. He was prepared for just about anything, and it was nice to have a craftsman install my stove and liner, rather than what I might call a 'contract-only' guy, who did only what he was paid to, in only the way he was paid to do it. I also appreciated having a regular guy doing the work, who was happy to chat with you about this and that. He also had some nice comments on several things I had done to the home by way of repair or maintenance, and had a few suggestions or ideas for other things I was going to do in the future.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed having Jeff do all this custom work for me. The results were great - I've had the stove running for one full season and all is well. He was a pleasure to have in my home, and when he left, he left my home as it was before he arrived. If I need any of the services Jeff offers in the future, I will contact him first.
