The only issue I feel deserves attention is that in order for this assistant to do the work under my bay window he needed to shovel out a couple of loads of coal ash (we think that's what it was, likely left from an old coal burning furnace many years ago) that had been in place in front of the bricks for many years. Doing this raised some dust. Even when shoveled gently, it created some deposits around the cellar and at the point where the work was being performed.
My issue is that the assistant was allowed to do this without any protective gear. No face mask. No eye protection. When I pointed this out to the assistant he shrugged it off. When I pointed it out to Gary Gilbert he made no move to protect his worker. Unfortunately I myself did not step forward to insist for the protection.
I recognize that this does not detract from the job he was doing. His brick work was fine. His failure to protect his worker is the concern here. That should have gone down differently and I regret my failure to intercede.
Our brick front steps have been steadily deteriorating since we moved in 14 years ago. We contacted several masonry companies and Gary gave us a quote that fit our budget. We liked Gary's honesty about the project and the ideas he had for the job. He quoted us a price of 2k but said that if the steps were filled with sand then it would be an extra $500. We asked for this in a quote and Gary promptly sent it to us via email.
The project took a little longer than expected with the weather hampering the work, but we had good communication with Gary throughout the project and when he said he'd be there, he and his crew showed up and worked steadily until it was time to stop for the day. Gary took his time to explain what they were doing and what they planned to do. When it was revealed that the sill behind the bricks did need repair due to rot, he made sure that we saw what needed repair and explained what he would do and assured us that it wouldn't go over the additional $500 he quoted. Quite simply, everything was upfront without a lot of B.S.
We are very happy with our new front steps and we would definitely use Gary again for any future projects.
