I have never had hardwood floors and was not sure what to expect. I had removed the carpet, pad, tack strips, staples, bagged all the wood blinds, removed all furniture from the rooms, and emptied all the closets. I also sealed the ducts, since we had the ducts cleaned last year. Bagging the blinds and sealing the ducts was not necessary as the amount of dust was minimal and we were going to give the annual blind cleaning afterwards anyway. We wiped all the walls down afterwards and found very little to no dust on them.
I thought that I had removed all the tacks and staples, but Ric's eagle eye found at least 10 tacks and a few staples that I had missed.
The sanding noise was not as great as I expected. The stain, seal, and poly did not stink as much as expected. Ric dust mopped with a micro fiber mop, the floors before staining, sealing, and poly the floors. Ric's attention to detail is second to none.
We have a family room that needs to be refinished. If we ever decide to do that floor, Ric will be our only choice. Same if we ever decide to have the dining room / living room floors finished, which have also never been finished.
1 --We were impressed Ric (owner) called us back in a reasonable time (something that isn't always done). Reliable. Expect him to bring a pouch/array of stain samples for you to pick from. Worked with us to find the best color for our home. Communicated a work schedule daily so we knew what was going on.
2--Service-oriented. Appears to be a perfectionist and wants his clients to be happy with his work. Woods take stain differently--RIc worked "above and beyond" to get the finish stain exactly as we wanted.
3-- Excellent job of sanding and his experience shows. We have NOT found spots which were sanded down to far or not enough (a problem we have had with other flooring jobs in the past). Kept mess of sanding to a minimum--something I wasn't looking forward to with this update. We were pleasantly surprised at how little dust was around when the project was completed. Cleaned up after himself at the end of the day.
4--Pricing was competitive to others in the area. He stuck to his estimated price (again, something that isn't always done).
We ended up with a beautiful floor! And we are picky!
Installer was owner Ric Barner- Ric scheduled time to meet with my wife and provide various samples of woods and stains and finishes for her to look at and choose from - this was probably the longest part of the process - once she had made her selection we settled on a date to begin and Ric purchased the flooring - Since Ric works by himself, his project schedule is a month or two out from whenever you agree to start the project - I agreed to tear out all the exiting carpeting, backing, parquet flooring and base molding - I had this completed a few days before the project was to begin - Ric brings in his wood a few days early to let it acclimate to the environment -
Hard thing was getting everything moved out so first floor was empty and ready for work to begin
With that done, we turned the house over to Ric - he gives you a pretty good work schedule and follows it closely , given he is also working on other projects and estimates during the same time - None of this external activity affected our project schedule - project took about 7 business days to complete
you do have access to travel over the flooring until the last two days when the sealer and clear protective coats are applied and access is limited - if you have a smaller home , I would stay somewhere else during the project - we stayed in out basement , which is quite large -
After the project was complete, you still need to stay off the flooring (if possible) for another 4 days or so for protective coatings to cure
Our floors look great - The flush oak air vents that complement the flooring -
Ric was very professional and friendly. He is very knowledgable with over 35 years experience - everything was done to our satisfaction - he was also able to answer all questions regarding transitioning of our existing furniture bases to new felt bases to protect the flooring
Would use him again and will as we have decided to do a front room on the same level to complement the existing new installation
the next time I need my wood floors refinished.
