Auto Sales
Mr. Waterman sells used cars that he buys from auctions around the state. Up until now, I thought he at least checked them out mechanically and there was an assumption that the cars he puts out for sale are mechanically sound, especially since they are parked in front of his auto repair service which has a long time good reputation. I have bought two other cars from him before, & both of them had oil leaks when I bought them. The first one I bought, he did not point out the oil leak but I could see it on top of the engine, but it wasn't bad, I just thought I'd have him fix it later. The second one I bought last year in September, and its engine went bad back end of May this year. It also had an oil leak but it was minor and was pointed out to me when I bought it. I had to make sure that it was acknowledged before I bought the second car. I bought the present car on June 9, 2008. He said he'd give it an oil change and a tune up before I took possession. I drove it off the lot after the "oil change" and the "tuneup" & it stalled. I took it back the next day. He looked at it & found a gas leak near the throttle body, fixed that. It still ran badly. I drove it the rest of the week, by the next Monday it was getting about 8-9 mpg. It stalled on the bypass, I managed to get it back to the garage & he drove it on the bypass, telling me all the time that's it's running fine, & that it couldn't run any better. He was blatantly ignoring all the information I was giving him about how it had acted not a half hour before. the next day it died 6 blocks from the garage; I walked back to the garage being upset that I was going to miss work yet another day because of this car. I boldfacedly asked him to take it back & give me one that did run right; I had had this car back to him 3 times now. He ignored what I said & towed the car in, charged me for that; & fixed the car replacing the o2 sensor and adjusted the timing, which was the problem all along & charged me for that. My point is, I have bought three cars from him now, all have had oil leaks, the recent one is a bad one. He has consistently ignored the information I gave him about how it was acting, & made me miss work & I get penalized for being late to work. I have never had this much trouble with this gentleman talking to me like I was a fool; he said that he had done all this work to this car &"practically gave it to me" and I still "wasnt' happy." He has never been this two-faced about business before. He should not be selling cars that aren't checked out mechanically even on a as-is basis especially from an auto repair shop. People need cars to get to their jobs & while he says business is down, he seems to make it out as if they have trouble scheduling a car (is it just me?) for repair many times when I call to see if they have room to fit it in. Now maybe that's just an addendum to my frustration about the recent car purchase, but the car's condition is more than enough.
