About us
The practice was first located at 9015 Ohio Street in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Bashara worked as a single practitioner of veterinary medicine there until 1981 when he hired his first associate. As Omaha grew, so did the need for veterinary services further west. Dr. Bashara opened a second veterinary hospital in 1985 at 120th and Blondo, which was then called Candlewood Animal Hospital. After a few years, and substantial growth, a third associate was hired. Both hospitals kept three full-time associates very busy for the next few years, and in 1997, Dr. Peter Bashara, an Iowa State Veterinary Medicine graduate and the son of Dr. Bashara, returned to Omaha and joined the family business. Omaha's continuing westward expansion once again required the need for veterinary services, and construction began to build a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital on the outskirts of the city. In 1999 the Gentle Doctor Animal Hospital was opened by Dr. Robert Bashara and his son Dr. Peter Bashara at 153rd and Maple in the Torrey Pines shopping center. The business continued to grow and currently has 44 professional and non-professional employees. Additional DBAs - Mapleview Animal Clinic PC, Candlewood Animal Hospital.

"Thanks for your review and we appreciate the opportunity to serve you. Pete Bashara DVM"
We left our recent vet due to the overall quality of service, and the outrageous prices. We have since come across another that we've come to like, but not a convenient location. Prior to seeing the vet that we've come to like, we also submitted our pets records to Gentle Doctor due to the proximity of our home. We recently got a reminder for one of our pets annual physical and thought we would give them a try since the location was convenient.
The overall experience was below average at best. The physical exam seemed somewhat standard, the vet did alert us chronic dry eye, which has been diagnosed previously. The vet prescribed the appropriate medication, without disclosing any sort of costs associated. What follows is disappointing and shocking. The entire cost of the visit was $406.57. Astonished by this, we then contacted the vet that we've come to like (but has an inconvenient location) to cross reference the prices on the same services, and same products. The prices of Gentle Doctor and Vet as #2 are the following:
------------ Procedure----------------- Gentle Doctor ------------------Vet #2 Cost
Urinalysis & Sedimentation $35.92 $30.00
Annual Physical Exam $66.92 $41.50
Canine DHPP 3 yr $45.54 $14.00
Canine Lepto 1 yr $25.20 $12.00
Bordatella $28.30 $14.00
Biohazard Waste Routine $6.12 n/a
Petcheck Heartwork $37.82 $30.00
--------------- --------------
$245.82 $141.50
This is for a basic physical exam folks. $100 difference. For the same work. In case you're curious, here's the results of the cost comparison for the dry-eye diagnosis & medication:
------------ Procedure-----------------Gentle Doctor ------------------Vet #2 Cost
Schirmer's Tear Test $36.63 $17.50
Amoxitabs 200mg (10) $20.10 $14.50
Opthal Ointment $60.18 $40.00
Opthalmic Ointment $22.98 $16.00
Heartguard Plus Chewable $18.21 $17.20
--------------- --------------
$158.10 105.20
Had we elected to stick with Vet #2, albeit 5 miles further from our home - our total cost would have been $246.70. But giving Gentle Doctor a try ultimate cost me $403.92. ($406.57 with tax). That's a difference (pre-tax) of $159.87. Gentle Doctor certainly did not provide $159.87 worth of improved service or products in any way/shape/form. Again, Gentle Doctor and Vet #2 are within 5 miles of each other and serve the same market. Gentle Doctor needs to stop their price gouging. Buyer beware.
"I would like to thank you for your honest feedback in regard to most recent visit. The entire team of The Gentle Doctor Animal Hospitals is constantly striving to improve client service, experience and value. I personally would like to apologize that your experience at Gentle Doctor Animal Hospitals fell short of your expectations. The comprehensive health and well being of our patients is a guiding core value of our Hospitals. If we failed to communicate service costs clearly at your request, we most certainly fell short of service expectations. We are empowered to provide and discuss comprehensive and accurate estimates for all services prior to or during any visit. The rising cost of veterinary health care is something we deal with every day. Only thru open and honest discussion can we work together to provide case-specific options and cost saving alternatives. If we may be of further service in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at any of the hospitals locations. Respectfully, Peter C Bashara DVM The Gentle Doctor Animal Hospitals"
It was a wonderful experience!
"To Angie's List Family Thank-you for taking time to post your experiences with grooming to Angie's list. We value all feedback, positive or negative. Obviously our goal is to meet or exceed expectations in all service areas – your grooming experience from 2010 clearly fell short. In reviewing your account, I regret just now finding out about your negative experience. I note that we continue to care for Chloe's medical needs having seen your family most recently in 12/2012. There is obviously no way to correct a hair-coat cut short, but our client satisfaction goal in all areas would have refunded your grooming fee at that time. Realizing you have obviously found another grooming provider for Chloe by this time, and that my efforts may be futile, I would love to offer you a complete professional grooming for Chloe at our new grooming facility in the Torry Pines Plaza near our Main Hospital location. I will send you a voucher with location details for Chloe via US mail that you may redeem at your convenience for any grooming service. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly with any additional questions or concerns. Peter C. Bashara DVM Vice-President The Gentle Doctor Animal Hospitals 402-445-4400"
"Thank-you for taking the time to post a review of our service to Angie's List. We value the comments of our clients, even more from clients that have visited multiple locations and that have been a part of our hospitals for 6 years! Please know you are always welcome to specify a DVM for your visit if interested and that many of our DVM's travel to multiple locations. Our goal is to continue positive client and patient experiences for all your pet health and wellness needs. If you ever have additional comments, do not hesitate to contact me directly for assistance. Peter C. "Member, thank-you for taking the time to post a review of our hospital to Angie's List. We HIGHLY value the feedback of our active clients as a means of continual review of both client and patient service. We are honored that you would continue to trust our hospitals as care providers for your pets. In reading your review, my heart goes out to you with loss of your beloved dog. I was unable to locate a record of the case directly but assume you were working with our boarded surgeon in this case. The complicated nature of what you describe may well have been the reason for the delay experienced. Knowing the preparation prior to an extensive exploratory surgery and the surgical time required to understand the condition prior to contacting you would easily be emotionally trying to any family member. Again my condolences on your loss. In reviewing you most recent visits (10/2011) to our Grant Street office, I do hope Tristan is doing better with the Joint-Heath management program Dr. Thomassen tailored to the findings of his diagnostic testing. As you know, many dogs are silent sufferer when it comes to chronic pain. The digital x-rays complete along with the diagnostic lab tests completed established the safety for sedation as well as use of both joint support products and medications to manage discomfort. Now that some time has passed we hope that Tristan’s clinical performance has maintained at an improved level. A quick calculation of the 4 visits including all the diagnostics, screening and medications was $714 - no small cost and we hope you find value is the service provided but respect you rating of our costs. Please know we are always willing to provide detailed estimates for services in order to avoid surprises and would never choose a time of emotional distress to benefit financially. I noted you recently contacted our office again for a refill of medications from an internet pharmacy. We are happy to assist you in finding the most cost-effective source for Tristan's medications but need to be sure our medical records are accurate prior to approving any prescription medications. As we are a secondary provider for Tristan, if we may provide any information of documentation to your primary veterinarian, please let us know. We look forward to any opportunities to work together in the future. Pete Bashara DVM Vice-President The Gentle Doctor Animal Hospitals"
