gutter repair, roofing

The project started on June 22, 2011, I called Kirill the sales person for the company to have him look at my house for possible hail damage. He showed up and walked me through the damage telling me the house would be a total. Meaning Insurance will cover everything except the deductible. As we walked around the house he explained to me that his company would do everything the "right way" He would have ice and water shield placed around the whole house. He even explained to me what it was for and why I should have it placed on the house. He said it would be in all of the valleys as well. I asked him about the gutters and he didn't think they would be covered because they are not damaged. I told him I would like to have those replaced at the same time since everything would be ripped apart anyways. I made it very clear to Kirill that I wanted the roofing done the week of July 17th because my family was going to be out of town. Therefore I didn't have to worry about the kids getting in the way or getting hurt. Plus I was going to be here so if anything happen I could make sure it was fixed before they finished. I promised me that would be a problem so I had him write it in the contract. "Due by the week of the 17th" I had an insurance check that I would give them at the beginning and then pay the rest when the job was completed. The check had to be signed by several parties, one being the loan company, Bank of America. Not wanting to have the check laying around the house signed I thought I would wait until just before they were going to start and get it signed. I didn't realize I would have to send the check to California to have it signed but I sent it in and when I got it back I told them I had it. When I told Kirill about the check he told me he would call a manager that lives 2 houses from me and ask if they could start the work without the insurance check. Kirill never called me back to tell me if or what the manager had decided to do. Had he told me I needed to write a check for them to start I could have easily done that. I was never told where I stood. When the materials were dropped off unannounced nobody came to the door to ask for money. They just left. So the week of the 17th goes by with no shingles and no phone calls. Finally Friday I call and ask what was going on and he said he would have it done on Monday the 25th. I had plane tickets to fly out on Sunday the 24th to meet my family in Chicago, so I would be able to be there. I received the check on Saturday the 23rd and called Kirill and told him I would have to leave the check at my mother's business in Lincoln and he could pick it up there Monday. He didn't bother to show up until Tuesday. Once again no phone call. When he picked up the check he promised the job would be done by Wednesday or Thursday of that week. July 27th or 28th. I was in Chicago but when I returned on the 28th the roof was still not done and I have yet to get a phone call from anyone in the company. Finally on Saturday with the roof still not touched, except for the shingles that were dropped off and had been sitting on my roof for 3 weeks, I call the company. I couldn't reach anyone so I left a message. Then to top everything off at 10 am on Sunday morning August 31, My family is woken up by a group of 10 individuals, only 1 who could speak any English knocking on my door ready to do the work. I was again never contact to make sure that Sunday would work. I could have easily been gone or my daughter could have been home alone and to have 10 complete strangers show up at my house without any phone call is very unprofessional. I will say the crew that worked on my house was incredible. They worked very hard and it was very hot. They never complained and took very good care of my property. However about 2 hours into the job after they have 2 sides of my house done I go outside to check on them and notice they are not putting down any ice and water shield. I ask the man in charge and he said he called Kirill and Kirill said it wasn't in code so don't worry about it and just get the roof done. I told him no I was promised the shield and I wanted it down. When the foreman called kirill again to let him know what I had said, Kirill told him to go get some and put it on. Five minutes later Kirill calls me to tell me what is going on. He tells me that he told the man in charge that he was suppose to go get the shield before they started and to make sure it was put down. He told me he talked to him about "an hour ago" and he should be almost back from getting it. I found this very interesting because I was standing 5 feet from the foreman that called Kirill and listened to the whole conversation not more than 5 minutes ago about not worrying about the shield and to just get it done. When I spoke with Kirill he said he had promised me and it would be done right. How is it done right if half of the house doesn't have the shield on it? So they finish the house and the workers did an excellent. I was very appreciative of their work. I provided them with 2 large coolers of ice, towels, cold water and anything else they needed. Now we were on to the gutters. I was then told the gutters would be done on or about Wednesday of that week. However once again nobody showed up and nobody bothered to call. When I called the main office and spoke to Kurt, a manager, promised me they would be at my house the on the 8th of August. So I took the day off work so I could me there to make sure everything was going to go right they never showed up. I stayed home from work for 5 hours and finally at 2:30 I got a call from Kurt saying the gutter people didn't make it. Like I didn't know that already. However once again I sat at home waiting for them to show up and never received a call about anything that was going on. I was tired of dealing with the company so I called Kurt and told him I didn't want to do business with his company and I wanted a bill sent for the work that had been done and I would pay it off and we would part ways. When I received the bill it was for $500 more than I expected. I called the company and spoke to Paul the owner and he told me the discount they gave me for advertising for their company was not going to be honored. He said I broke the contract and he didn't feel the discount should be applied. He told me if I didn't pay the full amount he would put a lien on my house and if it went to court I would have to pay for his attorney fees. I couldn't afford to take a chance of having to pay for all of that so I felt his big business was bullying me and I had no choice but to have him do the gutters. If I didn't have him do the gutters it would have cost me $500 more dollars than I had planned. All I wanted was to pay for the service he provided me and be done. I advertised in good faith for his company for 3 additional weeks after the contract said. I regret ever working with this company and I would never suggest anyone ever using them.
Description of Work: They were to remove the shingles and shingle the house. They were also contracted to put on new gutters. They told me they would put on ice and water shield put in new vents and cover an existing vent. All work was to be completed the week of July 17, 2011. I had the sales persons word and even put it in the contract that it would be done that week.

Response from Exterior Remodel & Design
I am a little late to this party, as I just now joined Angie's List and did not know all of this had gone on. Things I can assure you. Kirill is no longer with the company and has not been for some time. I often takes a while for a company to realize what an employee is doing to the companies reputation. I am truly sorry. This is NOT indicative of how we operate. This is an old incident and there is not much I can do now, so please just understand we have made changes, and this will not happen again. Thank you.
