The problems started with the timing. I basically contracted them for the week of the 21st of May. Then when I emailed to check on the schedule the week before, I was told they were expecting to do my project in late June or July. I was really upset, and insisted that they comply with the timing. They grudingly agreed, but only after complaining about it. They did show up quickly after that, but that gets into problem #2.
I had a simple request, as you can see by the "service performed" description. Instead of removing all the sand, they left about half of it, and laid down the sod DIRECTLY on top of the sand--probably about 6+" worth. No surprise, the sod immediately started to die, despite my regular watering. I had to force them to come back and remove the rest of the sand, and lay down topsoil, and they complied only after I basically threatened them with action. They came back, and removed really another 2 large trailers of sand from my yard, and put down top soil, and re-applied the same sod. Again, this was done very grudgingly, and after several very nasty email communications. The only semi-redeeming thing I can say is they did come back and fix the issue, but again, only after a lot of nastiness and serious pressure from me. At this point, I *think* my sod may survive, but it is probably too soon to tell. That is another problem with them--they DO NOT warrantee their sod or any plants. Based on their continued insistence that sod will survive over such thick sand, I can see why that is their policy, because they are completely incompetent about plant life and don't want to have to answer about inevitably dead plants. They also had to sub-contract that out, which I was surprised to learn at the end. Apparently, their usual work is more construction-like, and more for new building complexes, and not individual homeowners.
Two final comments: First, whatever you do, do NOT use these guys unless you want a massive headache, bad quality work, and grown men complaining and acting like 5 year olds. Second, be very careful about using family members of neighbors or colleagues, because if they do a horrible job like this, it gets awkward.
