Planning to hire again for some gutter work.
Overall, the roofing job Academy did was good to very good. The immigrant workers he hired did as good a job as they could, and they were prompt and fast. They did damage/kill a large number of plants in my garden, and no effort was made to reimburse me for those. Not even an apology.
I would say that Mike is a really nice fellow and no doubt knows the roofing business, but he is amazingly unresponsive and unprofessional regarding communications and commitments. He probably just needs a good business manager, so he can supervise the big roofing jobs. He also needs a supervisor to oversee the smaller roofing jobs, like mine.
"The work was suppose to start on May 20 but material was delivered wrong , so we had to change out material . It was a small job ,but did not set it up to be on job site during the job. we was in a 72000 home hail storm . We check on them as much as possible . Its not normal working conditions when it comes to large hail storms . When (removed member name) call me the first few times I was out of town . I did returned the phone calls at that time . We started playing phone tag at that time . The crew does speak English and the crew chief speaks very good English . The office phone was being answered and messages relayed if important and returned . (removed member name) was out of town for a long while for the holiday and with a sick father . She did return my calls when she retuned .We did get things handled for her on her concerns and I did get her warranty papers on her solar fan . She did give a down payment on her invoice and explained the issues on her father . I told her I would work with her on the rest . Still have not been paid yet on the balance still owed . I have not pressured her about it . Im sorry we played phone tag for awhile but it was on both sides not just one side . While we where out of town we was in a major 27 car accident in Winnemucca , Nevada . I had 3 other family members in the vehicle with me that had some injuries. No excuse but we both had a lot of things ( import things ) going on in our lives at that time . It was all bad timing and thought at the last meeting that we had all issues handled . I'm still working with her after all this time on the balance of the invoice . I have no bad feelings about it , it just things happen that are out of our control. I do apologize again about everything that did happen ."
Rick showed up on time with his crew and they went right to work replacing the house roof. Our insurance company had not allowed enough for the ice and water cover, under the shingles. Rick called them and got what we needed.
A few weeks later they came back and replaced the shed roof and the vinyl fencing. Then a few weeks after that the deck cover was replaced. Then the gutter guards were replaced.
It did take a while to get everything done, but they had a lot of other roofs to replace and they were very busy.
Rick kept in constant contact with us and worked around our schedules.
They did a beautiful job and we are very pleased with the work they did.
Background : My Decra Steel Roofing was initially installed in 2002 by LIFETIME ROOFING to replace a Hail Damaged roof. I came across Decra and LIFETIME ROOFING at a Home Show.
Decra Stone Coated Steel Roofing has a Shingle look to it, is hail and impact resistant (Class 4), and comes with a 50 year warranty. Had previously replaced 2 roofs in 10 years due to Hail Damage so this looked like an excellent alternative to Asphalt Shingles. In addition, my Insurance company had a 20% discount on premiums for homes with Class 4 roofing. Also, Ice Damming has always been an issue due to my roofline and numerous overhangs, and Decra is Freeze/Thaw resistant. Looked like my overall solution.
Problems: Had no issues with my roof or intallation until 2010. Severe weather and substantial Ice Damming resulted in water entry in main level bedroom and in living room with damage to walls and ceilings. Attempted to contact Lifetime Roofing and the owner Milo Olson for roof inspection and any repairs, with no success. Apparently no longer in business. Contacted Decra who said sounded like a faulty installation and had no current contact listing for Lifetime Roofing.
Bought a Roof Rake !
Solution: In 2012 I contacted the Upper Plains Regional Manager for Decra. Told him of my problems and wanted his recommendations on some experienced roofers in this area. ACADEMY ROOFING and Mike Stuck was one of these.
I went with Mike due to his knowledge and experience in Metal Roofing and his willingness to work with me on my concerns. Decra is interlocking panels so in order to inspect the Ice Damming problem at the eaves, he had to remove panels starting at the roof peak and work his way down to roof edge. We agreed to inspect and rework 1 section as my roof is divided by Valleys and peaks into 4 sections. We shook and he wrote the contract. Mike discovered that the Ice and Water Shield material at the roof edge had been mistakingly laid over the Felt offering no protection; and no overlap with the Fascia/Gutters. Same problem with the Valley. Without proper underlayment, the ice damming had caused water entry.
(Mike also recommended better Insulation in some areas that will help minimize my Ice Damming problems to begin with.)
Seeing what I was up against, Mike cancelled the Contract and we signed a new one to cover the entire roof. We both realized I had been pretty well "screwed" on the initial install.
He removed all panels, saving them to reinstall. This had really turned into a Project ! Laid Ice Shield on entire roof with special attention to eaves, gutters and valleys. Reworked all valley fascia leaving no voids. He found numerous problems and shortcuts taken with the initial installation. As I was absent during much of the initial installation in 2002, I was all over this one ! Mike was very understanding of this and patiently explained what he was doing and why. As the Owner, Mike was also "hands-on" in some of the rework, insuring the eaves and gutters were right.
Overall, I don't think I could have done better than ACADEMY ROOFING and Mike Stuck.
Would recommend him, and I have. I know that in addition to Decra, Mike does all types of Roofing.
I continue to like my Decra Roofing and it has held up well. No regrets, there. The problem I had was with the Installation, not the product. Thanks to Mike, I am now confident I have a proper install.
Academy Roofing subcontracts complete roof replacements to independent crews, but the crew that did our house worked tirelessly for 12-14 hours over two days to complete the job, including an outstanding clean up of gutters, and of the area around the house using a heavy magnet that snagged a plethora of old roofing nails. The crew members were courteous and responsive, although I was glad I had completed a few levels of Rosetta Stone Spanish to facilitate communication. They also mounted a power roof vent for me. The new roof looks great. (So far no rain, so I can't evaluate performance but will amend this review if necessary.)
Mike has been very helpful in submitting claims to the insurance company. (The process is more complex and bureaucratic than you would imagine.) I would definitely use Academy Roofing in the future.
"Thank You it was a pleasure to work mwith you to.We will be back to do the other work we talked about when it worms up ."
JC
"Just so people do not get confused , it is Mike the owner of Academy Roofing that seen him .It was a pleasure to work with both of you."
A couple weeks later, on Nov. 5th, the shingles were delivered and two days later the work began at about 9:30am. The workers completed the entire project by 5:30 PM the same day. There was no debris or any trace of refuse left behind and the finished product was outstanding. I would recommend using this company.
