"We are Willet Construction, not Willnow Concrete. Please remove this review as it does not pertain to Willet Construction. We did not work for this customer."
"Thanks, [Member Name Removed]. We really appreciate working with you."
This is a difficult review for me. So let me explain. First it was family members that recommended Willet to us as we had bought an older home that needed some improvements in the kitchen and adding crown molding in the dining and living rooms and the bedroom.
The PLUSES. Our designer Deb Brown was frankly....AMAZING! My wife and I told her what we wanted in terms of improvements and not too long after we approved her design drawings and the quote for service. Deb was very accomadating as over time we asked for changes. She never hesitated to listen to our views and always made us feel like we were in charge. She was prompt answering emails and submitting quality yet price friendly options to fit our budget.
The kitchen remodel went off without issue and the woodworking guys were outstanding. I felt they were working like they were on their own homes! You can't beat that. They were like Magicians as they problem-solved issues to achieve the perfect solution.
My dissatisfaction concerns the point where the crown molding was going in the rooms. Now I was present when the designer and the project foreman met us and they made exacting measurements of the exact lengths of the molding needed plus the overall linear footage needed. They checked and double-checked and we felt confident that what was needed was going to be ordered.
That is where the problem started. It is quite clear at the time this happened they lacked the quality assurance person or process in place to ensure what is ordered is indeed what they get. So not only was the molding that was delivered not in the correct lengths nor was the molding consistently stained in the correct color. Some molding was light and dark in the same color.
So the installers assume that what they get delivered to our house is what they have to install. Well they start to install the molding and they start to splice pieces together thinking that is what they were suppose to do. But when they do that they find that the wood is stained different shades (light-dark) so that the spliced segments don't match. That's when I'm told something is wrong.
When I call the foreman he tells me he can't check it out until later in the day. I finally tell the installers to stand down and stop where they are. Now the foreman does come by about a hour after calling him and realizes that there is an indeed a problem. What bothered me is that he acknowledges the problems of improper lengths and poor staining of the crown molding. But then he asks me if I can and quot;live with itand quot;! That was easy...I said no.
So they then took down all the molding and re-ordered and then installed the correct lengths and stain. So that was done.
Now after that mishap...the overall remodeling project turned out FANTASTIC. That's my dilemma.
Deb Brown our designer is SECOND to NONE! She took our vision and made it a REALITY! A+
The hired construction guys that work for Willet...A+. Amazing problem solvers that make you feel they are working for you!
Project foreman overseeing the construction...D. Nice guy but asking me if and quot; I can live with it?and quot; That's not right. Again a decent guy but isn't on top of things in my opinion. Probably spread too thin.
Quality Control/Assurance. F. Quite clear that no one inspected our materials before bringing them to the job site to ensure correct lengths and stains ordered matched what they received.
The subcontractors Willet uses to do the various specialty work like plumbers and electricians....A+. They are now my go to companies for service. You sure can't beat that!
Overall...the final results were fantastic! I just wish we didn't have to go through the issues listed above. So this is where I'm torn in making a recommendation. So I will just say, read through my comments and make your decision. The final outcome was amazing and we are VERY SATISFIED.
If they can solve their lack of QA of materials before they reach the customer's home then I will easily recommend Willet. Deb Brown and the full time workers are amazing. You can't beat those skills and talents! I hope this helps.
The second disappointment has been in scheduling the work. I understand that it is a busy time, and that is good for his business. But having first contacted Rick in June and being told at that time they were scheduling in August, I had hoped for a start in October after getting the drawings from my architect. It turns out they are looking at the first or second week of November, and that could be a problem due to family issues requiring a trip to Florida in November.
The work was started in November and the weather was cooperative. Opening up the northwest corner of the house was a little scary that time of year, but work went quickly and Jeremy Carpenter (I know ... Carpenter the carpenter) was extremely cognizant of the possible problems and took all precautions. He and his apprentice, Kevin, were very careful to try and keep things square and plumb when connecting to this 114-year old house. It took about 2 weeks to accomplish this part of the project, but for family reasons, the renovation of the second floor was postponed until spring. They successfully sealed up the
unfinished deck above our living room and it was free of leaks during the rest of the winter during several snows and a couple heavy rains.
So we began the next phase in April (rainy season?), I had removed all plaster, lathe and tongue and groove flooring from the second floor. As the superstructure of the old hip roof and knee walls was taken away, it became apparent the it had provided some support for the floor and that without that support, the floor would need to be stiffened up - basically rebuilt with doubled up 2x6s. That was a pretty major additional expense, but as I said, you never know what will pop up when you start fooling with these ancient houses. The floor was reinforced and they started opening up the roof to recieve a new ridge beam and 2x6s replacing the 2x4s of the hip roof. Gaping holes in the roof are a little scary in the month of showers, but Jeremy and Kevin were careful to make sure every thing was buttoned up with heavy plastic when they left for the day.
This part of the project took about a month and when Willet was done, I had an entire new roof applied by White Castle Roofing.
As with any old house, this is a Work In Progress, but I fully intend to have Willet help me with it whenever I deem it necessary.
Deb was very creative in the solution she created to address the support beam in the middle of the rec room. She designed a concept for a raised bar that looks fabulous and that is the envy of everyone who has seen it. She is delightful to work with, and I appreciated the thoroughness with which she addressed all the details of our project.
Eric was on top of every aspect of the project and even apologized to me for having some of our items not properly covered when drywall was being installed, and he made sure they cleaned everything up. This was quite a contrast to our last remodeling experience (GoodeGuy Construction) where EVERYTHING in our house was covered with a quarter inch of dust and no attempt was made to cover things or clean it up after it was over. It is apparent that the folks at Willet care both about the quality of their work and their reputation in the community.
The subcontractors they use were friendly and professional, as well. All the people who were in the house were exceedingly pleasant and cared about doing a superior job.
I particularly like that Willet Construction warrantees its work for a year, and they will come back and fix things that may arise after the project is complete.
The only and quot;complaintand quot; I had during the job was that we had quite a bit of woodwork stained and the fumes were quite overpowering one night. However, when I contacted them, Rick Willet immediately responded to my concern and the issue was taken care of immediately. That was the ONLY issue I had, and it really was a minor one.
I would highly recommend Willet Construction to ANYONE who is considering having anything remodeled, and I know we will be calling them again...likely to fix some of the things that weren't done properly in our last remodel. Now that we have experienced this level of professionalism and quality, we won't settle for anything less. I would give them A+ across the board!
"Thank you. We really enjoyed working with you. Your kitchen turned out awesome! We look forward to working with you on other projects in the future."
The crew arrived on time and completed the job in the same day! They found that the roof only needed to be repaired where the vents came through. The bottom line is this: Eric gave me a bid and it cost less than what was expected and they returned my check with a new bill that was way lower. How many times can you find an honest company that is going to refund you the difference? You will not find this often, if at all. I highly recommend this company due to their honesty and quality of work!
I then hired them again to replace my patio door lock and insulation around it. I knew it was going to take time to receive the parts since it was an original door. Eric went out of his way to speak with an Andersen door company and made sure the parts were correct. I can now lock my door, warmth is saved and the door functions perfectly.
The windows that we were having removed were in both our bedroom as well as what we were preparing to be the nursery, and I was extremely nervous about the handling of the lead paint. Eric, the project manager, was wonderfully responsive to my concerns and went well above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that everything was handled safely and give me peace of mind.
Part of proper lead paint removal requires that the workers wear Tyvek suits, which Eric and crew did. It was painfully hot (100 degrees in the shade) and horribly humid when the work day came, and the poor guys were literally dripping with sweat in those suits, but I never heard them complain or utter a single word of frustration. They had a great attitude that made a very strong impression. They were absolutely professional the entire time.
They handled our project (and my nervousness about it) with respect, courtesy, and care and I am extremely grateful. These guys do everything by the book, they're a total class act. I look forward to working with them again on future projects.
They started on time, and even with the weather being uncooperative for a week or so, the job was done as agreed including the and quot;punch-listand quot; finish process.
The person who did the bidding for us (Deb) also has a bent toward design and we found a comfortable working relationship with her. We were able to find a design for the bathroom that is something that we are proud of.
From my perspective Willett brought four strengths to these projects:
1) excellent craftsmanship in bringing my home's structure up to par ( and beyond )2) good craftsmanship in common building tasks (tile, framing)3) reasonably organized project flow ( not a lot of down time during project )4) good at listening when a problem is identified
There was a lot of work on these projects and many contractors and hours were spent. Willett is certainly not perfect in everything that got done and occasionally I had to step in and point out issues. For me the important part of this is that once I pointed something out they listened and then came out and reviewed what I was talking about and in the end it got resolved.
If you have the money and want a job well done this is a good company to work with.
From my perspective, I would say that Willet construction overcharged me, treated me like an idiot, and took no responsibility for their own errors.
"This project was finished more the 14 YEARS AGO. I had to look this up through my Quick Books Bookkeeping, and we finished this project in March of 1998. I am sorry, Teresa, that you are upset. I cannot remember the circumstances of this project as it was so long ago. So all I can do is apologize for not satisfying you. In 1998, we were a very small company. I took on all responsibilities in the company including the carpentry work. Today we have 12 employees that we delegate different responsibilities to, so that they can focus on certain specifics to service our customers more easily. Are we perfect? No. But we strive to be one of the best remodeling contractors in Lincoln NE. We have improved a lot in the last 14 years since this project was completed. And our goal is to keep improving in the future."
After having called so many other contractors who didn't seem to take the possibility of lead paint seriously, I was relieved when I found Interior Systems and Willet. They were great! I would definitely recommend them both and would certainly hire again. :)
We applied under a state program that is applicable to homes in certified historic districts for this remodel project, which added complexity. Rick was skilled in working with the state program officer responsible for approving the scope of our project in accordance with their historic standards, while balancing requirements under our city's current building codes, and our budget.
All of Willet's workers were very skilled, knowledgeable, professional and very courteous. Eric, the project manager, was great to work with on scheduling. He worked with our family's needs, and we tried to work with their schedules too, realizing we weren't the only project they had going. He kept the subs and schedule moving, so it all went well and in a very reasonable time frame given the size and scope of our remodel project.
We are now working with Willet on a smaller tile project on our liv. room fireplace. I wouldn't hesitate to work with them again or recommend them, including their subs, who were great, except for one.
We only had issues with one of their subs, Demma Flooring. He installed new red oak hardwood flooring in the kitchen and half bath during that remodel and did the sanding/stain work. Compared with another hardwood floor refinisher we had worked with in the past, he was not as good, and I would not recommend using Demma. He did, however, get our kitchen floor to a reasonable level, but it was a long and somewhat painful process for us both. I gave up after that, realizing that he and his crew were just not as experienced as the other company who had done work for us in the past, and we just needed to move on at that point.
