First of all, the water softener is still working great and we like it. No complaints there.
Unfortunately, our experience with Hall's Culligan was totally soured by the handling of payment. I will do my best to recount the facts and let the reader pass judgment. I dealt with Allen, a very courteous salesman with Culligan, and we agreed on a twelve-month "same as cash" financing plan. The water softener was installed in June. In July, we received a statement, to my surprise, for the full amount of the water softener. I contacted Allen, who said he would be unavailable for a couple of weeks, but not to worry about it and it would be taken care of. When he returned from his absence, we arranged to meet at their office and he explained that they had changed financing providers and I just needed to fill out new paperwork. Done--I have a copy. I left feeling assured that the matter was settled.
In August, we received another statement for the full amount plus a late fee. I once again contacted Allen. He checked on it, told me they would remove the late fee, and that they were simply waiting on financing to send the check. Very well.
In September, we received another statement for the full amount plus late fees, along with a notice that Culligan would now turn us over to a collections agency! I turned to Allen again, with some urgency now, that I really wanted this taken care of. The text of his message, received on September 9th is as follows: "The check for your funding has been received and verified. You will not receive additional invoices from Wichita. Please feel free to reply or call if you have any questions or concerns."
On September 24th, I message Allen again, curious as to why we had not received any statements from the loan. He said to expect it in the first week of October. OK.
I was away from home until October 17th. When I returned, I had yet another statement from Culligan with multiple late fees with the following text: "NOTICE TO CURE DEFAULT You have the right to cure this default for a period of twenty (20) days from the date of this notice. If you do not correct this default, we may execute rights against you under law; including acceleration of all amounts you owe Culligan and/or suit in a court of law. Your default consists of a failure to perform a financial obligation to Culligan in the unpaid balance above. You must cure this default on or before 20 days. If you have questions, please contact us. You have been given every opportunity to take care of this matter and have neglected to do so."
Needless to say, I was very upset. For whatever reason, Culligan has not followed through on their commitments to us to provide financing or to remedy the payment situation. Now our credit is at stake and Culligan is threatening legal action in the form of a written notice.
I contacted Allen immediately about the matter. He said that he would check it on right away on Monday. At this point, I was losing sleep over the situation, so we contacted our attorney. He contacted Culligan's office and wound up as frustrated with them as we are. We decided that our best course of action would be to pay the amount in full (fortunately, we are able to do so; I feel for anyone who can't and is stuck dealing with Culligan) and warn anyone who will listen about our experience. I have not heard back from Allen.
I will not know until next month, but given my experience so far, I expect to receive another statement for the full amount without our payment applied. Worse, I have no idea about the loan. I know for a fact that they have twice requested our credit report, so I suspect that they have a record of a loan to us that they are not telling us about.
In summary, I will certainly never do business with Hall's Culligan again. I strongly recommend you do not, either.
