We had numerous problems with the overall quality of work as well as with the timeliness of response to our issues and the quality of work to fix the issues. We literally had to nag them to attend to the mistakes they made during installation. Everyone makes mistakes but the hallmark of a good company is what they do to fix them and Carpetland fell massively short.
1) The tiles in our bathroom - on the floor and on the shower wall- were installed unevenly. The height difference between well over half of the tiles was more than the minimum accepted by industry standards. The tiler needed to come out four different times before the issue was resolved. Less than 2 months later, water from the shower started to leak through tiles on the shower floor into the basement because of the shoddy work done. Again, Carptetland needed 3 attempts to repair this, to no avail. In the end we hired an outside contractor to correct the problem and he was able to do so.
2) In the kitchen, there were several spots where the backsplash tiles were incomplete. As if the worker had run out of tiles and simply stopped. There was no follow-up or completion until we called their attention to it and made the worker come back to complete the job.
3) Several transition pieces on the flooring were missing. Again, it appeared the job had just been abandoned with nobody attending to finishing it until we raised a fuss. When they did return to finish, they installed a light grey transition piece between two different dark brown floorings - it looked terrible. As a wheelchair user, I have a lift in my home. One of the transition pieces was glued to the floor of the lift. When it started and the lift was raised, it tore up the transition piece as well as the flooring. The worker was not astute enough to recognize that a lift moves and it isn't a good idea to glue anything to it which is also glued to the flooring.
4) The wrong carpeting was installed on our stairs. We had to wait for the correct carpet to be delivered and once it was reinstalled, we had to have the stairwell repainted.
During all of this, we experienced the biggest run-around ever. It took several phone calls to schedule the repairs, the repairs were done incorrectly or poorly, we were told and quot;the tiles/carpet etc. is on orderand quot; after we were initially told it was in stock. Never once did anyone apologize for the inconvenience or mistakes. I will never do business with Carpetland again and I do not recommend anyone else do so.
I would like to add Carpetland. They are very very good for their services too. The services are excellent. They are very prompt. The price is very reasonable.
It was a small project and it seemed as if it was a bother - we have other carpet needs and sales representatives ought to keep that in mind.
Price was best out of the 4 stores I checked
They ordered the exact carpet I wanted after checking in other stores and online and didn't try to sell me something else; and the order came quickly
Store was convenient (I live north of O St.and don't want to trade at places way south in town)
Installers were a team of 3 who came on time, were friendly (although we spoke different languages, the team leader did OK in English), worked really quickly and hard and did a good job, cleaning up as they went and when they were through, and they didn't play music or anything that was annoying
point of having floors installed. First the salesman and quot;forgotand quot; to tell
us about the 75 cent/sq foot shipping fee that needed to be added to the
bill. Then the representative that measured the home told us that the
particle board sub floor had a layer of plywood overlying it. We bought
the house, checked, and it does not. They then delivered the order a day before we even closed on the house. The company also told
us it would be just fine to staple any wood into particle board, and
that there would be no problems. This is not true. We have since asked
for our money back and will not be working with Carpet Land.
The problems we encountered with the purchase and installation of the ceramic tile began at the point of purchase. We were told by the salesperson that the style of tiles we were purchasing had a high degree of variance in tone from tile to tile: i.e.: Some tiles were light and some tiles were dark. We chose this product for that reason. Upon installation, we discovered this to not be the case and that the tiles were, in fact, nearly identical in tone; the opposite of what the salesperson had told me.
Also at the time of sale, nobody informed me that smaller tiles of the same style were available. Had I known this, I would have purchased some of the smaller tiles to enhance the new flooring.
Also, nobody inquired as to how I would like the tiles to be set. Luckily, I was present prior to installation to let the installer know that I wanted them laid diagonally. While this did divert another disappointment, I was still met with an unexpected charge for laying the tiles diagonally. One would think these things would be something that the sales representative would have covered with me as I purchased the tiles and ordered installation.
Another problem that I had was the response to my question regarding the warranty. According to the sales representative, Carpetland offers no warranty on their product or installation. According to the installer, he guarantees his work, but only verbally and with the promise that he’ll answer his cell phone if you call. I do have problems and I would like them remedied, but I am hesitant to have him back to my home for reasons that I will cover later.
The biggest problem that I have with the installation of the tile is similar to the problem I have with the installation of the wood flooring. It’s obvious that no thought was given to the placement and direction of the tiles as they were laid, which resulted in numerous examples of identical tiles right next to each other facing the identical direction. Again, even a novice knows better than to do that and it looks terribly unprofessional.
I don’t know if sealing the grout is part of the installation, but the installer did not seal the grout and explained that he included a waterproofing mixture into the grout, negating the need to seal it. Unfortunately, it’s abundantly clear that the grout is not waterproof, as you can watch water absorb directly into the grout upon contact.
Under normal circumstances, I would call the installer and ask him about this, but considering that he took such an angry tone with me when we were trying to get him to finish the installation job in the first place; I’m not particularly inclined to converse with him or to have him back in my home.
In closing, I also want to point out that I have never heard of a business of this type not sending someone over to inspect the job prior to billing. Everyone I have spoken to who has had this sort of service performed has informed me that there was a final inspection before final billing. Nobody beyond the installer has come over to inspect the job that was done. This leads me to suspect that the problems I had with their service happen often.
