You should always seal cut countertops to prevent damage and to keep them looking their best. The right way to seal countertops depends on the type of material. For laminate and wood, apply epoxy or other specialty sealers by pouring it onto the countertop and letting it flow across the whole surface to the edges, guiding it with a paint stick or putty knife. You will need to move quickly so that it does not dry or harden before you are done. For stone countertops, use a sealant specially manufactured for your type of stone and apply it according to manufacturer directions. 

Yes, you can install a new layer of laminate over old laminate if you want to save time and money. The most important part of this project is cleaning the existing countertop thoroughly. Then, you will need to sand the surface and apply contact cement, after which you can install the new laminate layer on top. Other options for improving your existing laminate countertops include painting them or installing an epoxy counter on top.

If you find that the laminate boards are chipping as you cut, you can try flipping the board upside down and cutting the backside first. You can also make a small cut to the top of the board before flipping it and cutting it from the backside. If these strategies do not work, you can place painter’s tape along the edge of the cut to prevent chipping. It is also possible that the saw blade is dull and needs to be replaced.

Contact cement is the best glue for resticking laminate to countertops. For best results, find a product that specifically states that it can be used to secure laminate countertops, such as 3M High-Strength Spray Adhesive, Weldwood Contact Cement, Gorilla Max Strength Clear Construction Adhesive, or 3M Fastbond. Before gluing, sand the area you plan to glue to remove any large debris and to rough it up for better adhesion.

Laminate isn’t the most forgiving material, and you can only repair small scratches and gouges. For this reason, you should purchase a few extra planks when you first lay down your floor, so you don’t have to worry about trying to find a matching plank later down the line.
