They were always prompt, conscientious, energetic, exacting, approachable, and completed the job in a timely manner. The area was kept clean WHILE they were working, as well as extra clean-up at the end of each day, and a total go-over at the end of the job.
Each member of the team knew his particular job well and would readily explain the what, why, and how of both the task at hand and the materials. Also, they seemed proud of what they were doing. They were invested in the job, and not just there for the paycheck. The main employees have been with the company for a long time.
Dave, himself, would show up at least once each day to assure that the job was progressing satisfactorily. At the end of each day he would summarize what was done, discuss what would happen the next day, and would ask if I had any questions. He also informed me of needed repairs of which I was unaware such as a bad pipe to the furnace and a nasty crack in the chimney. Then he, personally, fixed them while the others were finishing the roof. No Extra Cost.
I highly recommend Dave, his skilled team, and the affordable, thorough, and meticulous service and product they provide.
Oh, and you can also get lots of good stories, histories, ideas, pictorial reviews, jokes, and even left-over rolls at No Extra Charge! Enjoy your next job with J & J Roofing and Remodeling.
The project seemed huge to me, but to David and his team it was easily accomplished. David's whole team was professoinal - all the required tools and product were there at the start of the project, the team came when they said they would and stayed to work the entire day and returned immediately the next day to finish. David was on-site the whole time, available for questions, and overseeing the project. Also, they cleaned everything up afterwards.
I give David a five star rating on pricing, timeliness, quality of work and professionalism - Thank you!
Work was done to my satisfaction. I had been having a lot of issues with water dripping in between gutters and house in few areas, irrespective of amount of rain/melting snow received. I had both Wagner and Valley back on few occasions, but problem persisted and after a period, I felt like my concern was being ignored. I thought J&J cost was high, but that is the way things are all over this area as of late. You pay a premium and hope for the best. I am not trying to disparage either Wagner or Valley Gutter, but in the future, I will recommend J&J to others who have similar issue.
We told him about our homeowners insurance being void in a couple months and he had no problem getting us taken care of within the next week. Mind you, this was the beginning of the summer, which I imagine is prime time for roofing The day of the job, it wasn't some third party contractors that showed up to do the job either, it was Dave, and his own workers. This is what really sold us on them; they had decades of experience in the business and they were local. I was really surprised that Dave was there in the morning, during the job, and did a walk through with my wife when the roofing job was complete.
The only minor hiccup we experienced, was getting the chimney boarded up the same day. That took a few phone calls, but within a few weeks they came out and finished the chimney in a couple hours. Again, Dave showed up and explained why it had taken a bit longer (needed to order materials, had a couple larger jobs to complete prior to ours, etc.). Now, while I wish everything would've been done the same day, I was ecstatic that our roof was complete within a week's time. I completely understood that we were put ahead of some other jobs because of our situation so this was a minor thing.
Bottom line, stand up service, the job got done quickly, and even with the minor hiccup, I'd recommend these guys to anyone looking for a great roofing experience.
In short it was an ok job. My roof was originally done by A+ Roofing (Peterson) and it was a disaster. I posted the review on Angies list, but for some reason they do not show it. David McCrakin came out and gave me a quote to replace over half of the roof and repair another section. I agreed to the work.
There are still some things that need to be fixed on the roof. David called me this week and assured they would be fixed.
All in all, a good experience.
The repair and reshingling work done by Dave's crew was actually very fast and of decent quality, and fairly priced. Sadly that is the only good thing I have to say about it. The work crew left food wrappers, cigarette butts, and bits of shingle and tar paper, and nails all over my front and back yard and driveway, which I had to hurry and clean up after they left so my dogs wouldn't get into them and get sick. I was then told the crew that was going to do the gutters was going to be by no later than the end of the week to put the new gutters up. Well, he didn't get here until the middle of September, and that only again after several messages that weren't answered until I finally lost my temper and threatened the company with legal action to get the money paid to them back so I could get the gutters done by someone a bit more professional. I was called back the next day with the owners of the company telling me a tale of woe about how their son was in a car accident the night before. What that had to do with my gutters not being done for 3 weeks after the agreed upon time I have no idea. I was also told that the gutter crew did come out on the day agreed on, but they didn't start work because "it was too hot.". Which while being a lousy excuse, seeing as I used to live in Florida and saw roofing crews knocking that work out in triple digit weather all the time, I would have at least grudgingly accepted it if someone would have said something, instead of me having to leave several messages and finally threaten legal action to get any kind of information or forward movement on the job I had hired and paid them to do. The gutter crew got 3/4 of the job done, then stopped over concerns about an exposed wire coming into the house from the road. Again, the crew just took off with out saying anything to me or even leaving a note on the door, so I had to call and leave more messages with the owners to find out why they had stopped before the entire job was done. I again was very upset at the lack of communication and professionalism but I did agree the wires needed to be covered. This was the only believable excuse I have heard from this company the entire time I had been begrudgingly associated with them, so I went about contacting the power company to get it taken care of. That took a few weeks to get accomplished, after which I called J&J again to let them know that the wires were covered and they could finish the job. They called back within a week to let me know the gutter crew would be out by the end of that week to finish up. Of course they weren't, but I was so depressed and tired of dealing with these unprofessional clowns that I didn't even try to contact them again. I just started saving money so I could get someone else to come finish the job. The crew did finally show up 2 weeks after they were supposed to be there, finished the gutters, and took off without a word of apology or explanation. I would strongly recommend that if anyone was thinking of having J&J Roofing and Repairs do any kind of work on their house, garage, dog house, whatever, that you seriously re-examine the situation and decide to either do it yourself or hire someone else. The quality of their work is decent, and the prices are fair, but their horrid attitude, poor communication, lack of professionalism, and even basic worksite etiquette (i.e., not leaving a huge d*** mess on your client/employers property) means that you will have to deal with more frustration than it is worth. Dave is the king of half-a** excuses, and does not seem to understand, even after so many years in business, that clients don't want lame half-baked excuses or tales of personal woe, they want the job completed when they were originally told it would be done. The utter lack of regard, punctuality, or basic customer service means that I will never recommend this company for any job. I know I said the price was fair, and it was, but $12,000.00 is still a lot of money, and for that amount of money going out, I expect a much higher level of treatment and service than I believe anyone ever receives from this company.
I originally called 3 contractors for bids. All three were reputable and had good reviews.
Dave McCrackin came by within 2 days, called me immediately with information for repairing the roof and left a shingle sample book with a completed contract, warranty information, insurance bond for his company, etc. on my back porch. I reviewed the material over the next couple of days, waiting for comparison bids. In the meantime my insurance adjuster came by and reviewed the roof. No insurance coverage but my agent knew J&J's work and also commented that the price was very good.
After 7-9 days of starting my bid requests, I still did not have bids from the other contractors. Nothing alarming there but I did need to get going on this roof. It was amazing I didn't have water damage in side the building as the shingles had completely failed. (Short note: they were interlocks and had not been in productions for at least 7 years. Unfortunately the original contractor that built the garage had retired, I had no specific warranty information on the shingles,,, etc. etc.)
I contacted Dave McCrackin with some questions on shingle materials, a tree that needed to be cut back and other general information on what the job would entail. He gave me straight forward talk and info. We agreed on the job and a time frame. I completed the contract and mailed J&J a copy.
I contacted J&J three times between the agreement time and start time of the job. I always was able to speak directly to Dave or his wife, Coreen or if I left a message I was contacted quickly.
Work started on 09/04/2013 and finished the next day at noon. My garage is a 2 story 2 stall garage on a small lot with 6' fence all around and plantings against the south exposure of the building. I mentally made a note on how the tight space and landscaping would fare with all the roof activity. Dave's crew worked well and efficiently taking care of all possible considerations for the roof. I was impressed with how well the plants fared. They were completely covered with tarps and had a little cosmetic damage to the plantings and none to the landscape. The cleanup was excellent and looked very good.
The owner was on the job 85-90% of the time, monitoring their progress and checking their work. He has personally trained each one as to how he wants the job done. He is the last one on the roof, and if anything is found not perfect, the workers are 'fined' accordingly. Consequently, all the work is checked and rechecked by the team of installers, and by the owner himself.
My thoughts on the roofing industry: it is a shame that we homeowners are at the mercy of the individuals in this business. We seldom think about the roof of our home unless something happens to it; if it succeeds in keeping the rain and snow out, so be it, as far as the homeowner is concerned. I had 2 other 'opinions' on our roof put forth before committing to this contractor, and not one of them was in agreement with the condition of our roof. I encouraged the owner to work on forming a professional, non-profit association of roofers for ND, and he said that he would welcome such a move. Nothing is more irritating to homeowners than to be ripped-off by someone who knows that most of us know absolutely nothing about what makes a good roofing job or not!
A few words about the owner: He could sell ice to Eskimos! Realize this if you call on this company. His ego is bigger than the states of Texas and Alaska combined, but in examining and witnessing the work he and his crew carry out, he is entitled to that big ego! I walked the roof with him for the final inspection and am convinced this is the last time this home will need a need a new roof. assuming no weather disaster - heavy hail, hurricane force winds, or a direct lightning strike - occurs, this roof will outlive me and the next owner of the home. Look past this man's braggadocio and realize that he knows what what he is talking about.
