Unfortunately, the job did not go well from the beginning. At first all was well, but the timeline began to slip quickly. Permits were not even pulled for several months, and the garage was not started until January 2015. The attic, which should have only been a couple of weeks, dragged on and on -- it did not get completed until July 2015.
The attic had several issues: Labor used was young and unskilled. The "supervisor" was also unskilled and illegal. Several mistakes were made that required re-work. HVAC was not resolved until July 2015, which was the final piece of the work. During that time we experienced issues like - closet shelving installed with picture nails into drywall, kinked hoses and vents, improperly placed HVAC control units, power issues, and more.
But the worst part of the job was the garage. Nearly every single step of the way there has been a problem with the quality of work. This contractor regularly chooses to use $12/hr unskilled journeyman labor instead of bringing in trades who are more expensive, but will get the job done in 1-3 days. The unskilled labor takes weeks per task. The contractor did not provide appropriate materials (hand saws instead of electric, hand painting walls and siding, using - and taking - my ladder). The workmanship was terrible - bad drywall, bad siding, windows sticking out of the wall, buying the wrong parts several times, failing structural inspection 4 times with the same items repeated over a span of several months, etc.
Through it all the contractor was terrible and largely unresponsive. The lead representative, Mike Nash (the son of the license holder), would promise to remedy issues and not follow through. He promised at the start of the job to provide materials lists, and has refused to do so. He promised at the start of the job he would be present, and refused to do so. His lack of presence on the site has let the unskilled labor make many mistakes that required re-work. His failure to pay trades led to trades refusing to come out, leading to no other option but his unskilled labor. This labor has put up drywall before plumbing was installed, and cut into the concrete foundation of the building to try to make holes for plumbing in a spot that is against code (just one of many examples). Hung doors the wrong way, put light switches in the wrong spot, etc.
Other issues include not delivering the requested service -- one example, he missed several windows that are no longer installable because he didn't plan for them despite them being in the plan all along.
At this stage, because I have met my obligations in the contract to pay on the proscribed schedule, I have paid Nash Construction in full for the attic and the garage ($72,000 - the bathroom estimate was $22k). However, there remains to date at least $10,000 worth of work to complete the garage. Mike Nash has abandoned the project - he does not return phone calls, text messages, or emails, and has not shown up (or sent anyone) to the job site in some time. In addition to the unfinished work, there have been significant costs to me for the overage - storage unit rental for 9 extra months, higher service bills, car detailing (from not having a garage to use; the cars parked outside became covered in sap), etc.
The job is not complete and there are significant code and permit violations.
Do not use this contractor. The person with the actual license (his father) is living out of state in NY and has no day to day involvement with the business. Mike Nash is not licensed on his own, and there is no oversight.
