I recently finished building a murphy bed, one of those beds that folds up into a cabinet against the wall. The manufacturer of the mechanism and the plans for building it is Create-A-Bed, out of Kentucky. Their instructions indicate that the mattress cannot be over 12 inches thick, or the bed will not fold up and close properly. This is for a spare bedroom, so the mattress did not have to be top of the line. But I didn't want junk either, as there may be an occasion where I might want to, or have to, sleep on it. So the trick here was finding a mattress that was no more than 12 inches thick, but was close enough to 12 inches to be able to leave the sheets and comforter on it and still be able to close the bed. I visited every mattress store and every store that sold mattresses, within that two mile area in Winston Salem around Hanes Mall Blvd and S. Stratford Rd. There are at least 12 mattress stores in that area that sell mattresses. I ended up at Mattress Center. They have two locations, one at 1268 S. Stratford Rd., between the bridge over Silas Creek Prkwy and the stoplight just before you get to Flow Chevrolet......its where the old Wendys use to be and now its a nice new building with several businesses in it. The other location is at 3756 Creekshire Court, off Hanes Mall Blvd, next to the ATand T store across from Target. I found a mattress I liked at a place in Clemmons, but they did not allow returns. Since this mattress was going in a murphy bed, and getting the exact measurment of the thickness was a little difficult, I was afraid to buy something I could not return if it didn't fit just right, so that place lost my business. I ended up at Mattress Center, on Stratford Rd. I dealt with Brad, mostly, but his business partner Paul usually is at the Stratford Rd store. Brad happened to be there the day I made my purchase. I visited the store about three different times on two different days. I could not make up my mind between two different mattresses. One was very firm and about 10 .5 inches, and the other was softer, but a little thicker. Brad was so very nice, not pushy, letting me try each mattress for as long as I wanted. I did not haggle the price, as I had been to the 12 other places and I already knew it was a decent price. Maybe I could have gotten it cheaper, but I was happy with what I paid. I even got to take one of the mattresses home and try it out for fit in the murphy bed. I left the plastic on it. I recommend this business and for sure I would buy from them again when the time comes that I need another mattress. Maybe I'll have to build another murphy bed in that second spare bedroom. We'll see. I forgot to mention that this business is locally owned. I'm so happy they beat all the competition, including the big national brands. I try to buy locally when I can.

Mattress Center has multiple locations. All of them were better than Sleepy's and better than The Mattress Firm. We went to 6 mattress stores on Memorial Day. The information on the mattresses themselves was easily understood. The way the LIST prices changed with features was clear. The pricing was generally competitive BEFORE negotiating (better term than haggling as it was non-adversarial and haggling seems negative). Prices were much better AFTER negotiating. Local business. Pricing on the same product varied from location to location and salesman to salesman so visit all their stores before you start to negotiate. The Creekshire location had the best price. Delivery was on time. The delivery personnel were courteous and did a good job.

I'm happy to be the first review and hope I can guide someone else here as well. I have bought many mattresses in the past and dreaded the process. There was always an air of high pressure sketchiness-- never sure if the price was real or if I was buying the right thing. The Mattress Center on Stratford was different from the beginning. I was guided to exactly what I was looking for and offered a great price, way better than Costco where I was heading to avoid the hassle. Paul was professional, knowledgeable and low key. I eventually did shop everywhere else (just for the heck of it) and came back here. I ordered and paid and had the 3 mattresses delivered a few weeks later. The delivery guys were terrific! It was a tricky staircase and they could not have been more careful. I'm a very happy customer from start to finish.
