I had considered doing this work myself, or hiring someone to simply replace the old insulation. I am very glad I went with Scott's company Crawlspace Concepts. Removing the insulation is a dirty, hazardous job. Scott's workers suited up and wore respirators. It also would have taken me weeks to get all the insulation out, seal the vents, and install the moisture barrier and dehumidifier. I had intended to replace the insulation, but Scott suggested I wait and see the effects of sealing the crawl space and controlling the humidity. Putting new insulation would have just given existing pests (part of the reason we were cleaning out the crawl space) a new place to live. Leaving the underside of the floor bare would eliminate their nesting areas and would allow me to inspect any other hidden issues, such as water leaks, mold, etc. I was concerned that a non-insulated floor would send my cooling/heating bill through the roof, but this hasn't been the case. I can monitor the temperature and humidity of the crawl space now, and now in the summer it is usually about the same temperature (about 74 degrees) and humidity (49 percent) as indoors. We'll have to see what happens in the winter, but so far Scott has been right -- we don't need to replace the insulation. If we do, we can always add it later.
Another thing that shows Scott's experience is that he laid in the moisture barrier with a slight overlap on the walls and posts inside the crawl space, but did not attach it to the walls. This allowed the pest control folks (we use Canady and Son) to easily do the termite inspection and treatment without having to cut through the moisture barrier.
Overall, we are very happy so far with the work Crawlspace Concepts did on our home. I am relieved to get the nasties out from under the house, and even more relieved to have a humidity-controlled crawl space that should greatly reduce the chance for mold and pests living under my house. Good job Scott!
