It's bad enough when a dishwasher breaks, but you can always wash the dishes by hand. Not to have a washing machine for 3 weeks is a totally different story.
In the very least, I thought Island Appliance should have discounted their repair man fee.
JULY 25, 2014:
ISLAND APPLIANCE CALLED ME 2 DAYS AGO TO SCHEDULE MY WASHING MACHINE REPAIR FOR TODAY. I CANCELLED MY MORNING APPOINTMENTS TO BE HOME BETWEEN 10AM-12PM. AT 8:30AM THIS MORNING, THEY CALLED ME TO SAY THE PART NEVER CAME IN. THEN WHY WAS I SCHEDULED FOR TODAY? I FEEL THE OFFICE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND I STILL DO NOT HAVE A WORKING WASHING MACHINE FOR WEEKS.
Cory, the technician, showed up within the 2-3 hour window I was given and even called 15 minutes before he arrived. He was friendly.
I knew what the problem with my dryer was so he didn't need to diagnose the problem at first, he just had to fish out a toothbrush that got sucked in to the lint trap area. (We can thank my toddler for that one.)
When he pulled out the dryer from the wall he said he had never seen a dryer with a water line attached to it before. Red flag #1. Steam dryers are not a new thing anymore, I worried that he had never worked on one before.
He was able to take the dryer apart, find and remove the toothbrush, and inform me that the toothbrush broke one of the fan blades. I asked if that was a problem and if we need to replace the fan. He assured me that it was fine and if it was his dryer he would just leave it as is.
He completely reassembled the dryer and then turned it on so make sure it worked. It made a loud noise. He disassembled the dryer again and couldn't diagnose the problem. He went out to his work van to call his supervisor. (He actually disappeared out to his work van several times for 5-10 minutes at a time.) The supervisor decided over the phone and without seeing the problem that the fan blade was to blame. The very same one I had just been assured by the technician was completely fine. Red flag #2.
So we had to order the part. The technician looked it up and told me the part only costs $21, but after a trip out to his van, the price magically jumped to $28 and I was going to have to pay an additional $90 to have him come out again and fix it once the part came in. What could I do? Its not like I could fix it myself. I told him to go ahead and order the part.
When I went to pay for the day's work I was surprised that the labor cost had gone from $45 to $60. The technician explained that it was because he had to stay a long time. Red flag #3. He only had to stay a long time because he didn't think to check that the dryer was working properly before he completely reassembled it. Then he spent a long while on the phone trying to figure it out with his supervisor. Its not my fault he's inexperienced and I don't feel I should have to pay extra for that.
The part arrived and Cory was back to fix my dryer on Thursday. Pretty quick turn around, so I was happy for that. The repair however too for-ev-er! He was at my house for well over two hours. First, he didn't have the right size ratchet and had to borrow my husbands, then even after he put the fan in it continued to make noise. Red flags #4 and #5. Another call to the supervisor later and he seems to have it in working order.
I was disappointed with the inexperience and lack of confidence in our repair technician. This took way too much time and cost more than I feel is fair. I will likely not be using this company for future appliance repairs.
It would have been nice if the repair technician wouldn't mentioned the indicator light voltage issue as a possibility when I showed him the GE bulbs that I had bought.
