Al Caviness

As always, Al has provided excellent service. He's great to talk to while he works as he'll happily explain what he's doing and why as he does it, and I'm pleased to say that I've learned a lot from him over the years.
He was able to fix a few of my issues, and gave me some pointers on tracking down another.
The easiest way to describe the service: Al knows his stuff, and if you watch him work and listen to him you'll learn something too!

Called Mr. Caviness after reading his great reviews on Angie's list. We were installing a new backsplash and needed to replace the outlets with new color plates, etc. It took a lot of effort to find time in his schedule to fit us in (he is an almost-retired instructor for electrical at Durham Tech). When he finally came out, I felt confident that he would do a good job, since he really knew electrical well - spent a lot of time explaining it to me...actually too much time. He talked a LOT. Nice guy but I really just wanted the job done without all the detailed and long winded conversation (I know waaay too much about his new marriage).
It took him a lot longer than I expected to finish the jobs but he didn't charge a lot more. He had to make several trips to our home yet I thought the price was quite reasonable considering the hours he spent here. Don't know whether he is just such a perfectionist that it takes longer or that he ran into problems (he didn't mention it though). So I was satisfied enough to call him again when our chandelier conked out in January.
When I reached him, he promised to come out the day after Martin Luther King Day, but no call, no appearance. And I got tired of chasing him down. Won't even bother to call again. I want someone who cares enough to show up...or at least call to let me know he doesn't want to do the job. I got the impression that we had a job that wasn't interesting so he just blew me off. Not professional at ALL. He's a teacher first, an electrician second in my opinion.

Called Al in the morning, he came in the afternoon. On time, pleasant, professional and a great teacher. I've used his services multiple times and will do so again.

Fantastic guy. Does electric work on the side (not appliances), teaches at the local community college. Spoke with me for an hour before coming out to my house in order to prevent me having to spend money.. Unable to walk me through the problem, so scheduled a meeting the next day. Once he got here (on time) solved my very simple problem. So simple in fact, he didn't want to charge me. I insisted he take a payment for his time and help. I am very happy with Mr. Caviness and will certainly use him again for any electrical problems.

I like him a lot very thorough and knowledgeable.

Al was great to deal with! He spent time on the phone beforehand to ensure he (and I) knew what the job would entail. He was prompt, had all the tools and parts when he arrived, and got right to work. He was willing to explain the tasks and discuss other ideas regarding potential jobs around the house.

Very educational. I helped him with the installs, as I wanted to learn, and of course retrofitting is never simple replacement. He also gave me advice on replacing receptacles and grounding issues. He also helped me over the phone later for no charge. Very helpful person.

Al is an excellent and experienced electrician. I called him about 11am on a Saturday morning (expecting he might be able to come sometime in the next week) and left a message; his wife called back about an hour later and I told her what I needed; she explained that the first time he could be available was about 3:30 that afternoon (I was pleasantly surprised); she said he'd call me back to get directions and sure enough about 3:00 , Al called and did some triage over the phone and then was at my house at 3:30 and got right work. I didn't have instructions for the "new" fan because I got it from someone else; Al didn't need any instructions - he knew exactly what to do and how to do (he told funny stories too while I watched). He pays attention to details and doesn't want to leave anything undone or not done correctly. I was very pleased with the whole experience and will call Al for any future electrical needs.

We found Al on Angie's List before, but forgot to rate him. He is absolutely superb in every way. We called him this morning and he came over immediately. He diagnosed the problem and got to work and finished very quickly since he is so knowledgeable. He goes above and beyond what he needs to do. We need some other electrical work done in the near future and we will definitely call him.

Al called back the same day I called him, he came the next morning, did the work quickly and taught me how to switch out receptacles myself.

He is very tidy and very good. He is an educator so if you are interested in learning he is willing to talk to you.
