We needed an estimate before closing and was told by Dan himself that he would do it that day. (our closing was a week away) He never gave an estimate or responded back that he had completed the quote. He never showed up. I would send text and calls with no responses. A few days later he responded saying he would get there that day or the next. Those days went by with no communication from Dan. We are now the day before scheduled closing and still no response. He is an absolute garbage contractor and NO ONE should ever do business w/ him. THE ABSOLUTE WORST SERVICE EVER

Description of Work: As an update to my previous report on Angies List: The windows of my sunroom have began leaking in December, 2010 -- just 3 months after project was completed. I have contacted Dan Herlong numerous times and he says that it is "my problem". Hired a contractor to access the water issue and discovered that none of the windows nor the outside door were flashed -- a clear building code violation. Also discovered that the windows were installed improprerly and not within accepted building practices. Now the upper windows are leaking. Again, Dan Herlong refuses to accept any responsibility for repair or reimbursement of my costs to have repaired. I hired an architectual engineer to access the issue before having another construction company bid on repairs. The engineer found that the upper windows are not in compliance with building code regulations and documented many other items that he deemed "general cosmetic issues with the construction that show a lack of quality in the work ... issues are ones I believe would not be considered acceptable by most contractors and homeowners ..." To repair the issues will require removing all siding & windows on a 25 foot span, replacing lower windows in compliance with code and replacing the upper windows with althogether. This will be a significant expense for me -- and all due to the lack of quality & code compliance during the initial construction. My frustration mounts!

It is very unfortunate that we were fired for time delays 1 week prior to finishing and to sealing the windows in question. Homeowner self inflicted the result in leaking windows by not letting us finish the job. The job did take about 3 weeks longer than expected. We we not paid our final payment.

Much of my experience with Herlong Construction was frustrating at best. Dan Herlong is a very nice man; although, he does not follow through with what he says nor is he in any way timely. The company seems to lack virtually all attention to detail. The project did not start on time and was 6 weeks overdue in completion. The last 3 of those 6 weeks, I was told daily the job would be complete in a day or 2. Issues included: * When preparing he roof for the addition, it was not protected properly for the evening. During a rain storm that evening, water came flooding into my home through the windows and 2 walls. Contractor said he would take care of it, but the room still smells of must & mold. Carpet was pulled from wall but not put back properly. Paint "bubbled" from the rain pouring in yet it was not repaired. I fear mold is growing rampant in the walls, yet Herlong would not check the situation. He told me if there was an issue, I should make a claim to my home owners insurance. I believe this was caused by his negligence and is something he should repair. * Told them very clearly, up front, that I wanted only one key to fit all doors. With the door knobs I purchased, I was told (by a hardware store where I bought the door knobs) that the "blue" key could be placed into a current lock to create a master key for the new locks. They did not do this & refused to replace door knobs & locks. * Back door frame not cut evenly and door does not fit properly. Cold air is now rushing into the room and wreaking havoc on my heating costs. * Window trim not even on virtually all windows. Asked to fix several times & they did not. * Wood seams on house should have been matched to new addition. Some are and some are not. Looks very unprofessional. * One wood panel not level at all. Has downward slant that is very noticable even to guests. * Room is 12' in width yet it is 1 1/2 " longer on one side then another. Looks odd with furniture in place. * Created a square hole for an oval cat door. Only caulked a portion of the opening. Also broke cat door on installation & now door does not always close. Pointed this issue out several times & it was never properly addressed. * Immediately, grout around tile in flooring started crumbling in a few locations. It was repaired once, now grout is beginning to crumble in other places only a few months later. * Covered the wood seams on the lower portion of the ceiling but not the upper seams. * Did not install 1 window called for on plans & did not discuss with me in advance -- just said it couldn't be done. No refund given for the window & lack of installation given. * Plans called for 2 ceiling fans. Thought that was in the price since it was shown on the plans but was tol I had to purchase them. Since installation, both fans have been off balance. * Electrician used had an expired license which caused quite a few problems with the HVAC contractor. Herlng Construction ignored repeated calls by me & HVAC contractor to contact the permit office. * Assumed that the paint on the interior of the house that was damaged during installation of doors would be re-painted, but was told there would be an extra charge. * Was told yard would be repaired "as if we had never been here". They did put grass seen down in one area but did not where a large dumpster had been sitting in the front yard for 3 months. Left a very unsightly area of dead grass. * When issues arose that were not in the initial quote, Dan Herlong would call me to explain situation & obtain my approval for expenditure. At end of project, he failed to obtain my permission of additional costs but did work he said was not covered then surprised me with the announcement that I owed him approximately $1000 for work he had already completed. All of that work was done without my awareness that it was not covered by the initial estimate -- total surprise. * I refused to pay for work not quoted up front & Dan Herlong refused to complete the punch list as shown above. In fairness, I must state that several people told me the framing job was well above and beyond code. I would highly recommend that anyone seeking a contractor who is attentive to details continue to look elsewhere. In my opinion, it would be only fair, honest and professionally ethical if Herlong Construction would refund me the amount of money it will cost to hire another contractor to repair his errors and complete the work satisfactoraly. He disagreed.
Description of Work: I contracted with Herlong Construction to add a sunroom to my home and replace the shingles on the entire home.
