Our first experience with A & M was very good. The repairs and painting in our basement was of very good quality. This led us to hire them a second time, which was a completely different experience. Their hardwood guy was excellent, and I would rehire him. The painting crew, though they were the same crew that did the basement, was terrible as was Mark's supervision of the work. Not only was the painting of sub-quality work - paint drips, uneven lines, obvious brush lines - but they left entire sections unpainted. I had to bring them back three times to correct their work. This wasn't to fix small problems that I was nit-picking about, but to paint areas that had been left unpainted, fix paint that splashed onto trim and windows, etc. I would point these out to Mark as we walked the house, but he didn't take notes and often only a portion of the errors would be corrected. Finally I walked the house and marked every problem area with blue painters tape. I wish I could upload photos and show the paint on my carpet, the paint on a telephone cord (yes, in their haste they painted part of a telephone cord), the two pieces of blue tape still on the baseboard pointing out areas that need to be touched up but never were, and the missing electrical outlet cover that wasn't replaced. Mark would usually unlock the house for his painting crew and then leave well before noon. The painters remained working in the house unsupervised until 6:00. Mark claimed he was passing off supervision to the painting supervisor, but he was usually absent as well. I received a phone call from Mark saying the house was finished. I brought the dogs home from the kennel hours later to find there were still workers in my house and that there was still another day and a half's worth of work yet to be done. In addition, the painters would often get tools from my workbench to open paint cans or other reasons, leaving them in different parts of the house. Mark was a little surprised when I told him this was unacceptable and that his painters were expected to supply their own tools. It was difficult to assign a grade to A&M. I would have graded them in the B+ to A category after their work on the basement. Their hardwood refinishing guy would earn an A. But the painting and supervision from the second job most definitely falls in the low D category. To their credit, I never felt A&M was dishonest, cheated, or stole anything, and that's not to be discounted. The quality of the work just varied widely, with the painting the second time being definitively subpar.
